El telescopio Hubble capta una colisión cataclísmica de un par de galaxias a punto de fusionarse

El telescopio espacial Hubble de NASA / ESA ha captado la imagen de una colisión cataclísmica en las galaxias en interacción IC 1623, las mismas que se encuentran en sus etapas finales de fusión. Los astrónomos esperan que una poderosa entrada de gas encienda una explosión de formación de estrellas en la galaxia compacta resultante.
A través de un comunicado publicado este lunes, el equipo de Hubble catalogó la colisión del par de galaxias como 'la imagen de la semana', bajo el título "choque de titanes".
Según los especialistas, "esta nueva imagen incorpora nuevos datos de la Cámara de Gran Angular 3 (WFC3, por sus siglas en inglés) y combina observaciones tomadas en ocho filtros que abarcan longitudes de onda de infrarrojos a ultravioleta para revelar los detalles más finos de IC 1623".
Las galaxias captadas están ubicadas muy lejos de la Vía Láctea, aproximadamente a 275 millones de años luz de distancia, en la constelación Cetus.
Además, la imagen de IC 1623 documenta cómo las dos galaxias están en su etapa final de fusión, pero este proceso tarda cientos de millones de años en completarse.
Los astrónomos continuarán monitoreando las galaxias para comprender más sobre los procesos de formación de estrellas en otros entornos similares.
El sistema de galaxias espiral IC 1623 fue descubierto por el astrónomo estadounidense Lewis Swift en 1897 y solo es parcialmente visible en determinadas épocas del año.
