Sobre lo alto de una colina en el sudoeste de Francia, Rennes-le-Chteau es un lugar solitario, ardiente bajo el sol en verano y azotado por fríos vientos en invierno. Su situación dominante sobre el resto de la comarca es la única razón posible de que haya sido habitado desde la más remota antigüedad. Su castillo es mudo testigo de pasadas grandezas. La visión de las cumbres nevadas de los Pirineos la única compensación a las dificultades de vivir en lugar tan inaccesible. Incluso la moderna carretera se hace tediosa al ascender del valle a la cima. Vista de lejos, la población parece aislada del resto del mundo, un lugar olvidado por el tiempo. Impresión pronto disipada por los numerosos visitantes que remontan la cuesta animados por un único propósito: Descubrir su enigma, adentrarse en su secreto, y es que Rennes-le-Chteau ostenta el prestigio de ser el lugar más misterioso de Europa, escenario de acontecimientos extraños y siniestros, cuna de fabulosos tesoros y guardián del secreto más bien guardado de la historia.
El enigma de Rennes-le-Chteau se inicia en la época romana. Después de que los soldados del Emperador Tito saqueasen y destruyesen el Templo de Jerusalén en el año 70 de nuestra era, el botín - el tesoro del Templo de Salomón - fue trasladado a Roma, donde permaneció durante más de tres siglos, hasta que el Imperio empezó a derrumbarse. En el año 410 los visigodos, acaudillados por Alarico, saquearon Roma, llevándose "El Tesoro del Templo". Dos años después desembarcaron en las costas meridionales de las Galias. La región de Rennes-le-Chteau les agradó, estableciéndose y fundando un reino permanente que no tardaría en saltar los Pirineos y extenderse por el norte de España. No sabemos si es cierto que el tesoro "El Arca de la alianza y las Tablas de la Ley de Moisés" llegó o no a las Galias, pero nunca más se supo de él. Y no se descarta que pudiera hallarse oculto en los alrededores de Rennes-le-Chteau. De hecho, no falta quien ha querido ver una relación entre el Arca y la población de Arques, no lejos de Rennes.
Tras la llegada de los visigodos a Rennes hubo dos siglos de relativa estabilidad, hasta que en el siglo VI llegaron procedentes del norte los merovingios, que extendieron su dominio sobre el reino visigodo. Estos invasores eran portadores de una cultura sofisticada y enterraban a sus soberanos con joyas y tesoros. Uno de estos reyes, Dagoberto II, se casó en Rennes-le-Chteau con la princesa visigoda Gizelle de Razas. Obvio es decir que la legendaria riqueza de los merovingios, bien documentada por la arqueología, ha dado pie a relatos de fabulosos tesoros aún por descubrir en la región de Rennes.
Considerando el magnetismo de dicha comarca para los tesoros de todas clases, no es sorprendente que en aquellos parajes se suponga oculta la joya más preciosa de la Cristiandad. Y por aventurado que parezca, es bastante posible que así sea, puesto que el Santo Grial pudo muy bien llegar a tales lugares en la forma que lo cuenta la leyenda: "En algún momento del siglo I, José de Arimatea y María Magdalena desembarcaron en el sur de Francia, trayendo consigo el llamado Grial, donde José de Arimatea recogió la preciosa sangre de Jesús Crucificado".
Esto es plausible ya que por aquel entonces la Galia meridional servía a los emperadores romanos como lugar conveniente donde enviar a los desterrados. Entre los indeseables ilustres que en un momento u otro recalaron allí por haber perdido la gracia imperial figuran, tanto Herodes Antipas como Poncio Pilatos. Históricamente es posible que María Magdalena y José, en cuanto fieles seguidores de Jesús, emprendiesen el forzado viaje hacia las Galias. En el siglo I de nuestra era existían rutas permanentes de navegación mercante de lado a lado del Mediterráneo, que facilitaban los viajes al eludir las penosas rutas terrestres. Muchas familias judías se establecieron entonces en la comarca de Rennes-le-Chteau, y de acuerdo con una de las teorías, una más de las que integran el enigma de la región, cuando desembarcó María Magdalena lo hizo con un hijo de Jesús, estableciéndose así una dinastía mesiánica. Bajo este punto de vista el Santo Grial dejaría de ser un cáliz que recoge la sangre de Cristo para pasar a ser sinónimo de Gri–al o sea Sangre Real, que se identificaría con la genealogía de los descendientes de Jesus hasta nuestros días.

Sin embargo, la verdadera naturaleza del Grial, es un tema tan misterioso como los orígenes mismos de la leyenda. En la versión más antigua, el Grial es un objeto dorado, una piedra mágica; en otras posteriores es el Santo Cáliz utilizado durante la última cena de Jesús, o es el cáliz que uso José de Arimatea para recoger su sangre. Suponiendo que éstas hayan sido explicaciones derivadas, el Grial originario pudo ser casi cualquier cosa. Más adelante los aspectos caballerescos de la leyenda entraron a formar parte del ciclo Arturiano medieval que luego fueron ampliadas por el romanticismo. Estableciéndose una conexión caballeresca real que vincula el Santo Grial con los corrientemente llamados caballeros templarios.
Los Templarios formaban una orden monástica y militar, prestaban votos de castidad, pobreza y obediencia, y alcanzaron una gran popularidad e influencia después de la Primera Cruzada y la conquista de Jerusalén. Tenían su casa principal cerca del destruido Templo de Salomón en Jerusalén, emplazamiento que les fue concedido hacia 1120.
Algunos indicios sugieren que el grupo fundacional de nueve caballeros ya se había formado incluso antes de aparecer públicamente como Orden. Pasaron los primeros años sin que se acrecentasen mucho sus filas hasta que en 1135 -1140 comenzó su ascenso meteórico convirtiéndose en una fuerza política y económica de primera magnitud. Llegaron incluso a tener más poder que algunos reyes, y ése fue factor principal de su súbita y espantosa caída, que culminó en la disolución de la Orden y la dispersión de su fortuna y posesiones. Por sus pasados esplendores y por las experiencias que acumularon en el Próximo Oriente, sin embargo, quedó alrededor de ellos un aura permanente de misterio. Se decía que los Templarios habían dirigido excavaciones en el interior del monte del Templo, y todavía hoy se formulan conjeturas acerca de los motivos que tendrían para abrir túneles en tan sagrado lugar. Una de las teorías dice que encontraron un tesoro, el cual llevaron consigo cuando regresaron a Francia para ocultarlo en la región de Rennes-le-Chteau, y que tal tesoro no era otro sino el verdadero y santísimo Grial.

Pero todo esto no hubiera pasado de ser simples leyendas o especulaciones, si no hubiese sido por un descubrimiento excepcional ocurrido hace algo más de un siglo en la iglesia de Rennes-le-Chteau en donde, un sacerdote católico llamado François Bérenger Saunière, elevó a nuevas y vertiginosas alturas la leyenda de Rennes-le-Chteau como lugar de misterio y de tesoros ocultos.
Nacido el 11 de abril de 1852 en la cercana aldea de Montazels, en 1879 recibió las órdenes sacerdotales. En 1885 fue destinado a la parroquia de Rennes-le-Chteau. Era un cura pobre, que mejoraba su alimentación con lo que pescaba y cazaba durante sus largas excursiones por la comarca. Sus dietarios, que se han conservado hasta la fecha, atestiguan un nivel de vida exiguo y raciones de hambre.
La parroquia consagrada a María Magdalena y escenario de las supuestas bodas de Dagoberto II con Gizelle de Razès, se hallaba en avanzado estado de ruina hacia finales del XIX. La última restauración databa del siglo XV. Todo eso cambió cuando el nuevo presbítero emprendió gracias a algunas pequeñas donaciones la restauración del altar. Al levantar el ara de las antiguas columnas que la sustentaban aparecieron varios documentos guardados en tubos de madera, de lo cual hubo testigos, porque Saunière contaba con la ayuda de seis obreros para los trabajos de la restauración, y dos de ellos aún vivían en 1958 y corroboran el descubrimiento de los manuscritos.
Desde aquel momento, Saunière mudó de fortuna. El hallazgo de cuatro documentos supuestamente antiguos puso en marcha un encadenamiento de hechos cuyas consecuencias rebasaron con mucho el mero bienestar espiritual del párroco. Desde aquel momento manifestó una inmensa riqueza, un tren de vida lujoso, hizo frecuentes viajes, restauró la iglesia, se embarcó en nuevas construcciones y convirtió Rennes-le-Chteau en punto de reunión de nobles y destacados visitantes.

¿Cuál fue el descubrimiento del párroco? ¿Que pueden contener unos manuscritos para mudar de tal forma la vida de una persona y de un lugar? De hecho doscientos años antes podemos encontrar vestigios de secretos escondidos. Mucho se ha escrito sobre la presencia de una misteriosa tumba de piedra, en medio de la vegetación, en las cercanías de Rennes-le-Chteau, habiéndose sugerido que esa tumba es la misma que el famoso pintor francés Nicolas Poussin representó en una obra de 1647, Les Bergers d´Arcadie II, la más misteriosa de todas las suyas. En ella vemos a un grupo de pastores observados por una enigmática mujer y reunidos alrededor de una tumba, en uno de cuyos laterales se muestra la leyenda «Et in Arcadia ego». La pintura se encuentra en el Louvre y Saunière encargo copia de ella. El cuadro, el cura y los pergaminos se combinan para aumentar el secreto de Rennes-le-Chteau.
La pericia de Saunière, con su no explicado acceso a una fabulosa fortuna y su repercusión en la tranquila vida aldeana de Rennes-le-Chteau, venían a confirmar las viejas historias sobre tesoros. De hecho los campesinos de la región tenían una explicación bien sencilla sobre la fortuna del párroco. Ningún enigma que descifrar: el nuevo cura se habría tropezado con una fuente de riqueza escondida por los antepasados. Pero el caso fue que mientras vivió, Saunière guardó silencio absoluto sobre el origen de sus fondos y se negó obstinadamente a revelar el secreto. Las especulaciones interminables a que dio lugar tal actitud se multiplicaron después del súbito fallecimiento de aquél. ¿Cómo pudo llevarse a cabo el rápido enriquecimiento de Saunière? ¿De donde provenía el dinero? ¿Qué contenían los misteriosos pergaminos?. ¿Tenían algo que ver con el misterioso secreto de los Cátaros, por el cual prefirieron ser quemados, muchos siglos atrás, en esta misma región? ¿Descubrió Saunière el tesoro escondido de los Templarios? Nunca lo reveló, pero dejó muchas pistas a su alrededor. Especialmente en su iglesia.
Después del descubrimiento de los pergaminos y durante varios años Saunière se dedicó a restaurar la iglesia añadiéndole decoraciones y detalles, figuras estrafalarias y tallas estrambóticas. Cualquier católico que entre en el lugar y desee persignarse encontrará que la pila del agua bendita está sustentada por un personaje bien conocido, aunque desde luego el que menos esperaría encontrar en tal lugar, "el diablo en persona". Por otro lado las estaciones del vía crucis, muy llamativas y desproporcionadas de tamaño difieren de los grabados de los vía crucis normales. Y por si esto fuera poco hizo colocar en el dintel de la puerta la siguiente inscripción "Terribilis est locus iste" Este lugar es terrible.
Saunière halló cuatro o cinco pergaminos en unos tubos de madera sellados. Dos de ellos contenían genealogías relacionadas con la dinastía merovingia, los otros hablan de pasajes evangélicos. Uno se refiere a como iba Jesús con sus discípulos en sábado por unos sembrados, y ellos cortaron algunas espigas y las comieron.

El otro cuenta la cena en Betania con Lázaro resucitado de entre los muertos, durante la cual María Magdalena ungió los pies de Jesús. La versión oficial de los pergaminos está exhibida a la vista del público en las paredes del museo Saunière en Rennes-le-Chteau.
Desde que las copias de los pergaminos fueron publicados - los originales permanecen ocultos - se ha intentado descifrarlos a partir de variadas aproximaciones. El Enigma Sagrado es posiblemente la obra mas leída sobre el tema y en ella, como en estudios posteriores, se enfatiza que el tesoro encontrado en el interior de la iglesia de María Magdalena, fue de naturaleza espiritual. Un secreto preservado a través de milenios, una herejía que atenta contra los fundamentos de la Iglesia y que perturba a todo cristiano comprometido: El cuerpo de Jesús permanece enterrado en un lugar cercano a Rennes-le-Chteau. Una versión señala que se exilió después de sobrevivir a la crucifixión mientras otra se inclina a que su cuerpo fue traído momificado por los templarios, y ambas que tuvo descendencia de su unión con Maria Magdalena. Y que su línea genealógica llega hasta hoy día. Si esto fuese cierto las leyendas sobre el Santo Grial adquirirían nuevos significados.
Mucho se ha escrito sobre el misterio de los Cátaros y Rennes-le-Chteau. Hoy sabemos que la fortuna de Saunière provenía de las donaciones de nobles y de sociedades secretas vinculadas al secreto. Un secreto que indiferentemente sea verdad o mentira, atrae a numerosos visitantes con ánimo de encontrar algo que quizás por su simplicidad permanece oculto a sus miradas pero abierto a sus corazones. Cierto o falso, verdad o mentira, forma parte de la historia de Rennes-le-Chteau. Algo que muy pronto todos podremos ver.
LAS CLAVES DEL MISTERIO
En la entrada de la iglesia, el Reverendo Saunière hizo colocar las siguientes inscripciones: "Mi casa se llamará casa de oración" y "Terribilis est locus iste" - Este lugar es terrible - La referencia bíblica completa es:
"Mi casa será llamada casa de oración, pero vosotros la habéis convertido en cueva de ladrones" (Mateo 21,13). Este lugar es terrible, es la casa de Dios y la puerta de los cielos (Génesis, 28,17)
El trabajo de reconstrucción de la entrada terminó en 1897 y costó el equivalente de 3.500.000 francos actuales.
En el suelo de la iglesia está dibujado un tablero de ajedrez de 64 cuadrados orientado hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales.
Justo en la entrada se encuentra la estatua del diablo Asmoideo, sosteniendo la pila de agua bendita y sobre ella existe un grupo escultórico de cuatro ángeles donde puede leerse la frase que Constantino había visto en el cielo: "Con este signo le vencerás", que por supuesto está bajo la señal de la cruz.
Pero la frase real de Constantino era sólo: "Con este signo vencerás". Este añadido -le- al original ha alimentado muchas polémicas.
Un dato significativo es que todas las estatuas en la iglesia miran hacia el suelo.
- En el lado derecho del altar la Virgen está sosteniendo un niño.
- En el izquierdo San José está sosteniendo otro niño.
Los dos niños a ambos lados del altar sugieren la idea de que Jesús tenía otro hermano o que uno es efectivamente Jesús y el otro su hijo y que, según la leyenda del Grial, su descendencia escapó de la masacre de Montsegur. ("click" en imágenes para agrandar)
En la iglesia de Rennes-le-Chteau algunas estaciones del Vía Crucis usan elementos e incluso escenas que difieren de las habituales, lo cual se interpreta como nuevas claves del misterio dejadas por Saunière.
Son lápidas muy llamativas, de tamaño desproporcionado con relación a las dimensiones no demasiado grandes del templo, y tal como han señalado algunos autores, difieren de los vía crucis habituales en detalles tales - imposibles de ignorar por un sacerdote - que indican una voluntaria intención críptica. Incluso, todo el Vía crucis está orientado en dirección contraria a la habitual.
