Corresponde a uno de los 12 apóstoles, cuyo nombre fue especialmente estimado en nuestra cultura, de ahí que haya numerosos santos con este nombre, entre los cuales resplandecen junto al apóstol y son de una talla inconmensurable, Santo Tomás Becket (de Canterbury) y Santo Tomás de Aquino.
