Call this the ultimate Florida beach road trip, 257 miles. Historic St, Augustine (the oldest European settlement in the U.S.), the Kennedy Space Center, Daytona Beach (pay $10 for a pass and cruise on the beach in your car, it's a local tradition), Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (said to have one of the country's prettiest beaches) and all the fresh fish you can eat at dozens of diners and dives along the way. Some people turn this day-trip into a week-long excursion, into the Florida way of life.
SAN AGUSTIN A PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, USA

 

Route 50 runs for 3,000 miles, from Ocean City, Md. to Sacramento, but the must-do stretch is 287 miles between Fernley, Nev., at the California border and Ely, near the Utah border. You will go through towns like Fallon, Austin, Eureka -- small town America at its essence -- and you are traveling through a brutal desert. But the quirky thing is that the towns on this route survive, because of "the loneliest road" marketing, and so there are places to buy gasoline, food, water, and even motels. Oh, Pat Nixon was born in Ely, so there's even a kind of celebrity aura. Don't miss Lehman Caves at Great Basin National Park near Ely. You will understand why you drove the Loneliest Highway.
