It may come as surprise, but the Bible evidences people actually looking heaven-wards! On Tarot Le Monde (aka the World and Universe card) we find (top left) Cherub, (bottom left) Bull, (bottom right), Lion, and (top right) Eagle. These correspond exactly with the REVELATION (4, 7) progression of Lion, Calf, Man and Eagle - with one notable exception! REVELATION takes us through these in a clockwise direction, but the earth moves through the zodiac in an anticlockwise direction (like Tarot X and XX1). Now Earth's 'wobble' means that Taurus becomes Aries becomes Pisces becomes Aquarius over time (the 'Age' the Earth is 'in'), a phenomenon is termed precession - and you are looking here, in this context, at what are known as the 4 Fixed Signs of the Zodiac. In circa the 3rd Millenium BC, precession delivered a Spring of Taurus Aldebaran, a Summer of Leo Regulus, an Autumn of Scorpio Antares and a Winter of 'Aquarius' Fomalhaut - 4 Royal Watchers. These, in turn, were Aldebaran= East, Regulus= North, Antares= West and Fomalhaut= South.* Since the zodiac is a circular, fixing any start (March21st/ Spring Equinox in this system= start) is utterly arbitrary. What applied, astronomically, in the 3rd Millenium BC no longer applies (due to precession). The counterclockwise astrological year, however, is fixed to a March 21st/Equinox/ Aries start** and the attached symbolism - borrowed from Babylon - possibly appears in the Bible at II KINGS, (2, II), ZECHARIAH (6, 2-6), EZEKIEL (1, 5-10) and REVELATION (4, 7). Does it also apply the REVELATION (6, 2-8) 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse? Are the four Biblical horses also the Babylonian Royal Watchers? This man-fish is identified with either the god Ea or his son Adapa/Uan and, by Joseph Campbell, with the (Pan) goat-fish, Earth-sign Capricorn, sign 10 of the zodiac and the one right next to the Aquarius. Hi Geoff, My understanding of the four living creatures is that they are representative of Eagle/Mercury/Air.... Ox/Venus/Water ....Man/Earth/Earth...Lion/Mars/Fire. Equating these to the stars suggested is problematic, take a look for example at the setting of the four as seen on a couple of basillica in Assisi; it can't equate with zodiac positioning as seen for example on the 6th century mosaic from Israel, or the Tarot card positioning .

BUT this leaves the basic model collison unaltered: Water and Air. Which should be assigned where? If we look at the ancient (astrological) "rulers" of the signs we find Leo ruled by the Sun (Gold?) and Aquarius by Saturn (Lead?) - the hot and the cold. Strangely, though, our E-W signs have Mars (Iron?) allocated to Scorpio and Venus (Copper?) to Earth. In fact, Venus is considered "sign detriment" to Scorpio. The Witchcraft/Freemasonry progression is clockwise, unlike the fixed star (precession and my) model. Despite some inconsistencies (like assignment of elements - Taurus to Air?) between the models notice they DO share much the same thematic mirror/complement/ opposite + circularity basis - albeit reassigned. To the chalice/Cups some assign the Galen's Hot/Wet Sanguine blood - but surely logic indicates a Spring?Summer placement, as in Galen and Audrey (rather than 'Autumn, Summer to some')*? The circle (read either way) is Bull-Lion-Eagle-Man-(Bull ... )* - so there's some consistency there but the assignment of Zodiac threesomes seems to be a moveable feast largely provided by having male and female axes rather than male W-N v female S-E sides (of an imaginary seasonal square). Note that the idea of male and female axes rewrites Galen, whose system had male-female polarities rather than axes. We are now nearly 1/5 of the way (5000 years - and Taurus through Aries through Pisces to Aquarius dawning Age of) into precession - from an Aries=21st March start.*
* To make a point: the earth moves counterclockwise (both through the zodiac and on its own axis) - it therefore 'explores' its zodiac in that order. Ptolemy, circa AD 150 (contemporary to Galen), has the Spring Solstice as 0 degrees Aries with Aldebaran valued at 15 Taurus and Antares at 15 Scorpio. Each zodiac sign is quite arbitrarily assigned a 30 degree spread (X 12 = 360 degrees = full circle). 15 Taurus = half way through Taurus, so 0 degrees Aries to half way through Taurus (an anticlockwise move) = 45 degrees, So Aldebaran APPEARS to have moved 45 degrees (of 360) from when it marked the Spring Equinox. Here, the lion seems to be identified with Summer (and Midsummer) and, often, the Sun (as in the Lion deity Hepta). In Egypt, this Lion Sun was once characterised born from a water lily. David Wood places the 4 Beasts on what appears to be a tetrahedral star - or, possibly, and as he says, just a hexagram Star of David - with Eagle atop, Lion right, Bull left and Man central, 'man and beast' emerging from the incorporated 'female vulva' (Fig. 82, GENISIS).. This distribution does not satisfy an EZEKIEL distribution! Where not Summer/Sun, Lion is Spring, be the system bipartite Lion and Serpent (or Boar), the Lion, Goat, Serpent (Chimaera combination), Lion, Dog, Horse (Hecate combination) or Bull, Lion, Serpent (Dionysus combination). A Bull-Calf for the New Year could give a four-part year (Bull, Ram, Lion, Serpent), and other 4-part combinations were our Royal (Fixed Star) Watchers, EZEKIEL's Bull, Lion, Eagle, and Seraph (Bull, Lion, Scorpion, Sea-Serpent) or Bull, Lion, Boar, Sea-Serpent or, lastly, Bull, Lion, Boar, Vultures. The 5 season Lion, Goat, Horse, Serpent, Bull-Calf is also possible - see Graves, R. THE GREEK MYTHS 2. pp. 428-9, for all of this and more. including the problem posed astrologers fitting the Labours of Hercules and 'Crab' together!. Graves 4-Season fit given is to Labours 1, 4, 7, 11 and he notes them falling on equinoxes and solstices (which would date it to circa 2500 BC!). I make it zodiac houses in months 2-3 (Aquarius), 4-5 (Taurus), 7-8 (Leo), 10-11 (Scorpio)*. Note also that the Midsumnmer Honey-Bee is the spirit of the dead/slaughtered Lion King of the 1st half of the year! Note also that Jesus was 'of Judah' - symbol? Lion. The Lion symbolised the bright waxing year; boar or serpent (and John) were the Dark waning year. In the above, the Scorpio Eagle gets also to be Scorpion and Boar, whilst the Aquarian Water-Bearer gets also to be Sea-Serpent and, in one case, Vultures!.
* Western/Tropical ....... as against Hindu/Sidereal (which seems to be a bit later, monthwise. Scorpio, for example starts 23rd Oct. in the former (2010) but 13th Nov. in the latter).

Proceeding from the right, the points are East, South, West and North. East is where the sun rises, and in Native American lore it is the "Place of Beginnings." In the northern hemisphere, South is the direction of the midday sun (Fire), represented by Wands or Batons, and North is the direction of Winter's icy, cutting wind (Air), represented by Swords. Since West is almost universally recognized as the direction of Water, that only leaves Earth for the East. This makes perfect sense if one lives in continental Europe where the cards originated, the vast land-mass of Asia is to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean is to the west.
*The first system 'weakness' to note in my distribution/assignments: Scorpio is a Water sign and Aquarius Air. The Fire in the south above is obviously another ... possibly!

Winter Spring Autumn Summer (anticlockwise). Not very Pike-ish ...In fact, it's an exactly opposite distribution pattern to that in Steiner - Man-Lion-Eagle-Ox- to Ox-Eagle-Lion-Man- (they mirror). Pike is Man-Lion-Ox-Eagle.
Lastly, Freemasonry's "Royal Arch", which appears to express the equinoxes (presumably Jachin and Boaz) as two pillars with the number 7 also indicated (more than once). Note the order here is also non-Royal Watcher, with Bull-Eagle-Man-Lion:
MOVING ON (and speculation):
In a tripartite year, Lion is 5, Goat 10 and Taurus 2. A maths model would be 6-10-2 (equilateral). Its mirror would be the Water signs Cancer-Scorpio-Pisces, 4-8-12. Were the model symmetrical/mirrored, then the Leo Lion would have to be the Virgo Virgin. Water would be opposite Earth (see Steiner-related art/Retrich). It could be said that 1. No-one shall see Isis naked, and 2. the REVELATION Woman (Virgo) is literally "clothed with the sun" (Leo - 'ruler', the sun) - 12, 1. It is this distribution of mirrors that places Earth opposite Water and Fire opposite Air (the 4 chariots of three Starsign Horses, as it were, geometrically rotated as equilaterals), otherwise, Air seems somewhat better suited (in my esteem/model) to Scorpio's Eagle as Water is to the Aquarius Water-Bearer?* However, the Alchemical Pillars (see 'Compass of the Wise' at www.geoffss.plus.com/tarotII.htm) place Fire and the Polarity (literally!) of Air. and Earth of Water (as represented by various pyramid sigils). The Water-Earth and Air-Fire poles/pillars fit to the Royal Watcher 4 scenario. In Witchcraft, etc., however, E-S v W-N.
Note: returning to the subject I notice that Galen seems to fit to the 4 Watchers if Hot, Cold, Wet and Dry are assigned to Cross-Quarter Days (ish) appropriately creating the various Solstice and Equinoctal 'combinations' that comprise the 4 Humours. In this model the N-S axis is male and the E-W one female. This is the one assigned to St John the Evangelist, the Beloved Disciple said by some to be female in Leonardo's Last Supper. This creates a new problem: alchemically the (male) 'J' pillar comprises Fire and Air with (female) 'B' as Water and Earth, with geometric symbols as mirrors Air to Earth and Fire to Water. But the idea here considered has Fire opposite/mirroring Air.
Whether you have a system where Fire mirrors (logical, Water-bearing and geometric symbol) Water, or one where it mirrors (Royal Fixed Stars) Air, another problem comes with Jesus and John: Jesus is Fire but Midwinter whilst John is Midsummer but Water (and Eagle!!!), whilst the Fixed Stars give Fire and Summer not Winter and Water is Autumn and Eagle! It's a mess ...
However ... I've met with the idea of male N-S axis to female E-W before, in the context of 'Horus' maths, the maths of (Euclid 47) right-angled triangles and the maths of Latitudes. E-W would be horizontal, Isis, and N-S would be vertical, Osiris. Their child is Horus, the hypotenuse. If Isis is, say, the Square Root of 33 and Osiris 4, then Horus will be 7 (33 + 4sq. = 7 sq.). And the Latitude will be the Tan value 4/Sq. Rt. 33 = the Sine value 4/7 = the Cosine value Sq. Rt. 33/7. Think of a Latitude as a horizon ... Horus? ... Horizon? Doubtless you can substitute other family trio names.
*This last paragraph is pure me-thinking-out-loud speculation. I'm not suggesting for a moment it actually obtains - or obtained - but, just playing with it a little more, we'd have a Leo spring - so Leo would have to be, say, where Aries was in 150 AD = March 21st Equinox. Now Aries is 1 to Leo's 5 = roughly 5 X 2160 = 10650 BC. Some speculate about the Sphinx in that timeframe (Lion/Serpent). Now, if Leo were Spring, then Capricorn would be Summer and Taurus-y would be Winter (New Year). It does fot to the 4 part year scenario rather?!

This is not a Royal Watcher or astrological distribution. Notice Pike has swapped water and air. There again .... what of the Celtic Eight=fold year:
And what of Yin and Yang? Shadow-Female-Wet-Earth-Moon-Compliant/Accommodating v Brightness-Male-Dry-Heavens-Sun-Active/Firm? We have our complements and opposites - and the (inverted) triangles (of the dark 'B' pillar/Earth and Water ... and Moon/Mater) are a "popular symbol for" female - but there are also inconsistencies with other ideas advanced above. Yin and Yang are polarities/opposites, but their imagery is also the mirror/complementary circle made by 6 9 run together with white for male (+ black dot) and black for female (+ white dot). There is obviously similarity to ideas above. If I try to fit Yin and Yang to the 4 Royal Watchers, though, male is the N-S (Sun-Air) axis and female is the E-W axis (Earth-Water). They are not polarised opposites. The symbology of the triangles - upright male and inverted female - found on alchemical J and B pillars fits to the axes, but it is hard to see how any of this is consistent, say, with White Woman of the West and Red Man of the East, the alchemical Moon and Sun. Galen will not fit, either. This female lunar Mercury- male/solar Sulphur symbology is at variance to female Red Rose v Male White which fits to Hindu wedding colours (+ gold) but apparently other cultures/religions have reversed values ...
Um! Water and Winter in the North ... but note the pairings 9-1 (South and North) 2tc = all 10s. Apart from the trigrams, it's the Magic square of Saturn, basically, where all lines = 15 when summed with the middle 5.
Here's something connected, possibly, to the above and to Feng Shui. Both apparently relate to Magic Squares, the numbers of Precession (and of my model!) and all sorts of stuff. Both carry the 8 trigrams. The one below looks like binary 0-7 to me (expressed as twinned pairs): top 7 to bottom 0, then (clockwise and counting out out from the centre, where __ = 1 , then 2, then 4 and -- = 0 wherever it is) 6 and 1, 2 and 5, 4 and 3. These are the Silver Gate of Gemini, through which souls descend to earth, and the Golden Gate of Sagittarius, through which souls ascend. Other versions say the souls of men can ascend by either gate, but that the Silver Gate leads to reincarnation and the ancestors, and the Golden Gate leads beyond reincarnation. The Golden Gate is also that through which the Gods descend.

A raíz de sus observaciones Kepler escribió la obra De Stella nova in pede Serpentarii, que significa "Sobre la nueva estrella en el pie del portador de la Serpiente", y de ahí que se le llame Estrella Kepler o Nebulosa de Kepler. Esta imagen recrea el momento de la explosión. Kepler estaba en Europa, que se ve ahí ya en la zona iluminada, en el día.

Desde la Isla Tierra, el fenómeno estuvo bien firmado por los astros en el Firmamento, pues los planetas Júpiter, Saturno (los más grandes del sistema solar) así como Marte, estaban en la línea de visión (aunque no visibles) entre los observadores de la Tierra y la supernova. Fue vista durante 1 año y medio y, por supuesto, de día.
Dado que la supernova (actual nebulosa) está a unos 13.000 años luz (1 año luz = 800 sistemas solares) quiere decir que está mucho más lejos que las propias estrellas que forman el grupo de Ofiuco. Y también quiere decir que realmente explosionó 13.000 años antes de cuando fue observada desde la Tierra. Lo que se vio fue sólo un eco retardado 13.000 años. Es decir que explosionó en un momento en el que la humanidad estaba muy lejos aún de diseñar la actual era cristiana en la que nos basamos para datar acontecimientos (históricos, no tanto cósmicos).
Pero para "datar" los eventos cósmicos (firmados por los propios astros) ya existe una referencia y guía natural como es la Madre (la Tierra) con su tan largo como lento movimiento de bamboleo, así como un calendario adecuado, acorde para ello, como es el calendario maya de 25.920 años. Así, cuando la supernova explotó en la región de Ofiuco, la Madre Tierra señalaba con el extremo norte de su Eje de rotación (su Dedo) casi hacia la estrella Vega, que hacía las veces de referencia del norte celeste (estrella Polar). El ciclo maya (paralelo al bamboleo del planeta) transcurría por la mitad de la 3ª Cuenta Larga.

Ofiuco es localizable en esta vista cenital bajo la constelación de Hércules.
Y tras unas 13.000 órbitas de la Nave Tierra al Sol (que nosotros acostumbramos a decir como "unos 13.000 años") el eco luminoso de esa supernova de Ofiuco alcanzaría el Sistema solar, el planeta Tierra y las pupilas de los humanos que la observaron. Actualmente sus restos han sido bautizados por los astrónomos encargados como "la Nebulosa de Kepler" o Supernova SN 1604. En Ofiuco.

Otra supernova observada desde la Nave Tierra en 1054 fue la que ahora es la M1 Nebulosa del Cangrejo.
La palabra Ofiuco deriva del griego ὀφιοῦχος (ofiujos), formada de ὂφις (οfis, serpiente) y - οῦχος (-ujos, del verbo ἒχω (ejō, yo tengo, sostengo, mantengo). Es decir que podemos traducirla como "el que tiene, mantiene o sostiene una serpiente", o "yo tengo, mantengo o sostengo una serpiente". De hecho, así es como se suele representar gráficamente a la constelación de Ofiuco, en forma de humano sosteniendo a una serpiente, pues la constelación de Ofiuco está en mitad de la constelación de la Serpiente dividiéndola en dos partes, cabeza y cola.
Las personas encargadas de incluir las palabras en el diccionario no han incluido " ofiuco ", pero sí otras palabras que derivan de la misma raíz:
El Ofiuco designa al sabio o sabia administrador/a del bálsamo curativo de la serpiente (el veneno que contiene su propio remedio) que utiliza la ponzoña o veneno como poción curativa por conocer el secreto de que el remedio está en el propio veneno. De ahí que se le denomine trambién Serpentario.
Entre las significaciones simbólicas de los signos zodiacales que representan a animales y humanos, Ofiuco representa al sanador y al poder espiritual -no comercial ni comercializable- de la sanación, básicamente del dolor emocional raíz que es el miedo y la culpa. Mitológicamente, Ofiuco representa a Asclepio, hijo de un inmortal (el dios Apolo, hijo de Zeus, dios de dioses) y de una mortal (Corónide) que fue el dios griego de la medicina que fuera incluido por Zeus entre las constelaciones. La constelación está junto a la de Sagitario, representada por un centauro arquero, y precisamente un centauro, Quirón, fue maestro de Asclepio y fue el que le enseñó el Arte de la medicina. En su trayectoria como sanador, Asclepio (Ofiuco) llegó incluso a resucitar a los muertos, entre ellos a Hipólito, el hijo de Teseo, o al cazador Orión. Para ello utilizaba la sangre del flanco derecho de Medusa, regalo de Atenea, que era la que daba la vida; la sangre del flanco derecho de Medusa daba la vida mientras que la del flanco izquierdo ocasionaba la muerte debido a un potente veneno, una representación del antídoto contenido en el veneno. También Asclepio tuvo tres hijas, una de ellas llamada Panacea y otra Higía, y de este nombre procede la palabra Higiene.
Hades/Plutón, temeroso de perder el poder por causa de la labor del sanador Asclepio que devolvía la vida a los muertos, pidió a Zeus que interviniera, y Zeus arrojó un rayo sobre Asclepio y lo convirtió en constelación.
La serpiente fue adoptada como símbolo del logo representativo del gremio profesional de la Medicina y de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (O.M.S.). Incluso el símbolo del dinero, el dólar ( $ ), semeja al símbolo de la serpiente enroscada, aunque ninguna persona podemos vender ni comprar la "panacea" o "elixir", no fabricable por mano humana ni existente en la sabia Naturaleza que, rebosante de buenas sustancias químicas (sólidas, líquidas y gaseosas) ninguna es válida para sanar el temor y la culpa, raíz de toda enfermedad mental, emocional y física. En relación al significado de "el que tiene, mantiene o sostiene una serpiente", el cuerpo humano contiene la energía espiritual que en la antigua cultura espiritual oriental se asocia a la serpiente llamada "kundalini". Desde este punto de vista podríamos considerar al organismo químico y físico humano un "ofiuco" en potencia. El mito de la serpiente curativa aparece también en la tradición hebrea bíblica como en el Libro de Números, 21:8, pasaje del Antiguo Testamento que conecta con el Nuevo Testamento a través del pasaje del evangelio de Juan (capítulo 3 versículo 14) presentando un paralelismo alegórico entre la serpiente y el hijo del hombre.
Antiguas culturas como la Huichol (Oeste central de México en la Sierra Madre Occidental) reflejan en hermosas imágenes de su arte textil y cerámico la sinuosa figura de la serpiente como un motivo común y básico. En su mitología sobre la Creación se representan 5 serpientes como las Madres del Agua. Y al Sol se le suele representar con 13 rayos.
La energía de la serpiente manejada por el Ofiuco viene a ser la llamada "Panacea" o "Elixir" cuyo secreto es conocido por el "dios/diosa de la medicina" simbolizado en las mitologías espirituales y religiosas por el aspecto masculino de dicho Ser espiritual. Precisamente Panacea es el hombre de una de las hijas de Asclepio. Tal personaje simbólico existe en otras mitologías como en la maya Quetzalcoatl; en la mitología celta es Bran; en la griega es Asclepio; en la romana es Esculapio -nombre muy parecido a Asclepio y arquetipo adoptado por el gremio médico- y en la hebreojudeocristiana es Jesús -arquetipo adoptado por la casta sacerdotal católica y por la cultura cristiana.
Estos arquetipos masculinos tienen sus reflejos femeninos (la Mujer), de modo que no son los portadores exclusivos del poder espiritual sino que solamente representan uno de esos dos aspectos que forman la Unidad armoniosa, bella, inmune y sana de ese SER Maravillos@ (divin@ y human@) al que todo SER humano desea y aspira por naturaleza e inercia vital y que, mientras no se conoce ni se busca ni se encuentra, se suele buscar en otra persona.
ASTROLOGÍA Y OFIUCO
Ofiuco es el nombre de una constelación. Otra cosa es un signo del zodiaco, pues sólo 12 constelaciones de entre 88 son consideradas zodiacales o astralmente significativas. Las personas astrólogas (profesionales y aficionadas) mantienen entre sí una polémica por la inclusión o no de Ofiuco como signo en la astrología tradicional. El Sol transita por la región sur de Ofiuco desde el 30 de noviembre al 17 de diciembre, independientemente de lo que ocurra en la mente humana gico tradicional tal periodo corresponde prácticamente a la primera mitad del signo de Sagitario. De hecho, el signo zodical de Sagitario "estirado" contiene algunas estrellas catalogadas como pertenecientes a Ofiuco. No hay razón para la polémica pues ambas ideas son ciertas. Las conocidas 12 constelaciones zodiacales asociadas a signos astrales son las manejadas por la tradición astrológica desde tiempos babilónicos paralelamente a 12 meses de número irregular de días (como del moderno calendario romano gregoriano) y a la división del círculo del reloj en 12 partes. Por su lado, el 13er elemento estructura limpiamente el año terrestre y el círculo, pues divide armoniosamente al año en 13 meses cuadrados (de 4 semanas, 28 días) + 1 día, y al círculo de 260 partes en 13 partes de 20 grados.
Por razones comprensibles, los astrólogos modernos no pueden insertar otro signo en un mapa astrológico milenario (lo cual no significa insertar otra constelación en el espacio real, el universal). Sería tan traumático como insertar otro mes en el calendario romano gregoriano. Aún así, las personas astrólogas que buscan un cambio suelen considerar a Ofiuco el signo oculto, pero otra cosa es la constelación, la cual está tan "al aire" como las estrellas con las que fue diseñada. Otras tienden a llamar a Ofiuco la 13ª constelación del zodiaco o el 13er signo, aunque si comenzáramos a contar las constelaciones zodiacales desde Piscis como 1ª (región en la que está el Puntero de Piscis o Punto Vernal que señala el momento del equinoccio de marzo) Ofiuco es la 10ª constelación, y Virgo es la 7ª, la que queda en el centro de las 13 y prácticamente al otro lado de Piscis.
En astrología se considera a Libra como el signo central (equiLIBRAnte) de la serie de 12, y es la casa VII, si bien en 12 elementos el 7º no es el central. Tanto si tomamos como referencia al 6º o al 7º elemento, quedan 5 a un lado y 6 al otro. Añadiendo un 13er elemento, el 7º queda como el central, con 6 a un lado y 6 al otro:

Llamamos "constelaciones" (y les damos nombres) a grupos de estrellas que vemos como puntos que esbozamos imaginariamente y que relacionamos entre sí, aunque las estrellas que los forman están más o menos separadas en la voluminosidad de la dimensión espacial (las 3 primeras dimensiones de la realidad). Realmente, tanto la constelación como su nombre sólo están en nuestra memoria, que es el filtro con el que observamos la negrura salpicada de luces. Por eso, mantener o cambiar lo que tenemos en la memoria -nuestra esfera celeste particular o grupal- no cambia lo que hay en el Cielo espacial.

Some Mayan groups named cycles after end dates rather than beginning dates. Este año se cumple el 25 aniversario del lanzamiento del telescopio espacial Hubble. Desde 1990, el Hubble ha dado lugar a más de 9.000 publicaciones en las mejores revistas científicas internacionales y nos ha ofrecido innumerables imágenes de altísimo impacto astrofísico. Todas las imágenes captadas por este telescopio tienen una gran belleza pero, posiblemente, la que más nos asombró de todas ellas, la que dio la vuelta al mundo y pasó a ser un auténtico icono de la astronomía contemporánea, fue la obtenida en 1995 de los conocidos 'pilares de la creación'. Esta asombrosa imagen plasma unas nubes interestelares de gas y polvo en la Nebulosa del Águila (Messier 16) donde están naciendo nuevas estrellas. Las nubes están situadas a 6.500 años luz de distancia en la constelación de Serpens.

Desde su puesta en órbita, el Hubble ha sido mejorado considerablemente. En cinco ocasiones los transbordadores espaciales de NASA han transportado a equipos de astronautas que han visitado el telescopio para su mantenimiento y mejora. En la primera de estas misiones, llevada a cabo en 1993, se corrigió un problema de construcción en su espejo y, tanto en ésta como en las siguientes, se ha venido equipando al telescopio con nuevos detectores progresivamente más potentes y de mayor sensibilidad. En la última de estas misiones de servicio, llevada a cabo en mayo de 2009, se instaló una cámara de gran campo (Wide Field Camera 3), su instrumento más avanzado para obtener imágenes en luz visible.
Ahora, veinte años después de la obtención de la primera imagen de los 'pilares de la creación', el Hubble, equipado con sus más modernos y más potentes instrumentos, ha vuelto a observar esta fascinante región del cielo. Además de una renovada belleza, la nueva imagen contiene información inédita de gran relevancia científica.
Visible e infrarrojo
Las nuevas imágenes han sido obtenidas tanto en el visible como en el infrarrojo cercano (en longitudes de onda de 1,1 y 1,6 micras). La imagen visible que encabeza este artículo es una composición de tres fotografías individuales, tomadas con filtros estrechos, que han sido codificadas con diferentes colores para revelar la composición química de las nubes.

El color azul representa la radiación del oxígeno doblemente ionizado, el verde la del hidrógeno ionizado, y el anaranjado la de los iones de azufre. Dado que las energías de los fotones, que son necesarios para crear estos iones son muy diferentes, las diferencias en color reflejan tanto diferencias en la composición y estructura de las nubes, como variaciones en la radiación ambiente que domina la zona. Por ejemplo, para arrancar los dos electrones externos de un átomo de oxígeno es precisa luz ultravioleta. Así pues, el hecho de que las nubes estén embebidas en el color azul del oxigeno ionizado refleja, a su vez, que la radiación ultravioleta impera en esa zona. Esta radiación ultravioleta, que procede de estrellas muy energéticas del entorno, ioniza y disocia el gas de las nubes interestelares y va esculpiéndolas con esas peculiares formas de columnas, erosionando las regiones menos densas en escalas de tiempo que se aproximan a un millón de años.
Las nubes interestelares son opacas en el visible; pero son parcialmente transparentes en el infrarrojo cercano, y en estas longitudes de onda dejan pasar con mayor facilidad la luz procedente de las estrellas que están situadas tras ellas. Por eso en el infrarrojo las nubes adquieren un aspecto un tanto fantasmagórico, pues tan solo las regiones más densas apantallan la radiación creando unas siluetas a través de las que traslucen las estrellas de fondo. Estas siluetas nos revelan por tanto la estructura interna de los pilares con mayor detalle que las imágenes visibles. Vemos que las zonas más densas se encuentran en los extremos superiores de los pilares, regiones que pueden llegar a auto-apantallarse y protegerse frente a la radiación ambiente. En esas zonas, la densidad es suficientemente alta como para que las masas de gas más internas, bien protegidas, sucumban al efecto de colapso gravitatorio dando lugar a núcleos progresivamente más densos y, finalmente, a estrellas nuevas.
Las estrellas nuevas, aún embebidas en el interior de las zonas más densas de los pilares, no son visibles en las imágenes ópticas, pero pueden ser detectadas en las imágenes infrarrojas. Se han contado más de 60 núcleos densos, pero tan solo media docena de éstos contienen estrellas nuevas en su seno. Los otros núcleos densos todavía continúan en el proceso de colapso y llegarán a formar estrellas o no, dependiendo de quién gane la carrera entre el desplome gravitatorio y la erosión producida por los ultravioletas.

Una comparación minuciosa de las nuevas imágenes con las antiguas revela algunos cambios. Por ejemplo, las estrellas nuevas arrojan chorros de gas al espacio, y el movimiento de estas eyecciones puede ser medido ahora de manera directa con gran precisión. Además, las nuevas imágenes son mucho más profundas y también permiten estudiar el borde de las nubes con muy alto detalle. Se observa así que este borde es extremadamente abrupto. Los pilares tienen dimensiones de unos 5 años luz, pero su densidad decrece en el borde desde su valor máximo a cero en una región de tan solo 0,001 año luz de espesor, una muestra más del efecto destructivo de la radiación ambiente.
Auto-regulación
En las nubes interestelares de nuestra Vía Láctea abundan las regiones similares a estos pilares de la creación, donde la radiación de una generación de estrellas ilumina y erosiona las nubes del entorno. La interacción de esta radiación con esas grandes masas de gas y polvo es muy compleja, pues varios mecanismos físicos se superponen: algunos contribuyen y otros tratan de impedir la formación de una generación siguiente de estrellas. De esta manera, la formación estelar va auto-regulándose, y la conversión de masa nebular a masa estelar va dosificándose a lo largo del tiempo de evolución de la Galaxia, permitiendo que los nacimientos estelares hayan perdurado desde instantes próximos al Big Bang hasta nuestros días, y que sean aún posibles durante un largo periodo de tiempo en la evolución futura del Universo.

El Hubble fue lanzado el 24 de abril de 1990 desde el centro espacial Kennedy, cerca de Cabo Cañaveral, en Florida. Está emplazado en una órbita casi circular a 559 kilómetros de altura que tiene un periodo de unos 96 minutos. El Hubble da por tanto 15 vueltas completas a la Tierra cada día.
El espejo principal del Hubble tiene 2,5 metros de diámetro, una dimensión modesta comparada con las de los mayores telescopios instalados en tierra que alcanzan los 10 metros.
El que está llamado a ser sucesor del Hubble, el telescopio JWST (James Webb Space Telescope), tiene un espejo primario de 6,5 metros y está especializado en observaciones visibles e infrarrojas. Su lanzamiento está actualmente previsto para finales del año 2018.
