Hi everyone. I’m currently running a backend service and a small API on shared hosting, and while it works, it feels fragile. Response times sometimes spike, and debugging performance issues is almost impossible because I don’t control the server environment.
I’m considering moving everything to an Ubuntu VPS, but I want to understand what real benefits I’ll get beyond “more control.” I’m not chasing extreme performance, but I do want consistency, reliability, and the ability to tune things properly.
For those who moved backend services from shared hosting to an Ubuntu VPS — was the difference noticeable?

The difference is very noticeable, especially for backend services and APIs. Shared hosting is optimized for simple websites, not for persistent services that need stable resources. On an Ubuntu VPS, you’re no longer competing with random neighbors for CPU and memory, which alone makes performance far more consistent.
Ubuntu is particularly good for backend workloads because it integrates smoothly with process managers, containers, and monitoring tools. You can tune your stack exactly to your needs instead of hoping the shared environment behaves nicely.
After moving my APIs to https://hostman.com/products/vps-ubuntu/  response times became stable, deployments easier, and debugging much less frustrating. Having full access to logs and system settings makes a huge difference when something goes wrong.
If reliability and control matter to you, switching from shared hosting to an Ubuntu VPS is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make

Thanks, this confirms what I’ve been suspecting for a while
