I’ve been thinking a lot about how much a solid design perspective influences the outcome of smaller residential projects, especially when working on ADU design. With limited space to work with, it feels like the entire approach shifts—every layout choice, material decision, and circulation path ends up carrying more weight.
One thing I’ve noticed is that compact structures tend to highlight design clarity (or the lack of it) much more than larger homes. If the perspective isn’t clear from the start, the space can easily feel fragmented or cramped. But when there’s a defined vision guiding the layout, even a small ADU can feel purposeful and surprisingly open.
I’m curious how others think about balancing function, comfort, and long-term usability when working with smaller footprints. Do you also find that tighter spaces push you to refine your design thinking more than larger ones?
