This new flag was created 1867 from the colors of Prussia's flag (black & white) and those of the traditional flag of the Hanse and the Northern-German Union (white & red). These colors Red, White and Black were used for a range of German flags. St. Mary Magdalene, Pray for Munich on your Feastday!
Breaking news: Munich under fire, at least 6 dead, possibly 3 shooters. Local police have asked for assistance of federal anti-terrorism units. Now called an "acute terror situation".
The story is just breaking and of course, everything is fluid and first information coming out of a situation will often change. What is known right now is that, according to Munich authorities, at least six are dead and “many are injured” in a shooting attack at a Munich shopping mall.
Latest reports from Polizei Munchen say there are 3 shooters on the loose and the public is told to shelter in place. They are calling this “an acute terrorist situation.” Reports are saying, at least 6 dead, possibly as many as 16 either dead or wounded.
As of this writing, there have been no arrests, and the local police have asked for the federal anti-terrorism units to come in because the situation is beyond their manpower capabilities and control.
Another horrible story. As my son texts me, “every week?” Yes, every week, it seems. This is taking place not far from Munich’s Olympic Stadium, where Palestinian militant group Black September took 11 Israeli athletes hostage, eventually killing them, during the 1972 Olympic Games. Just four days ago, an axe attack took place on a train, injuring several.
The patron saint for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising (former diocese of Cardinal Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict XVI) is Saint Corbinian, and let us of course ask his prayers for this breaking situation, but let us also ask the prayers of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Joseph, as we did in Baton Rouge.
But — most emphatically — on this first great feastday of Saint Mary Magdalene, beloved of Christ Jesus, let us plead for her prayers:

Puerta de Brandeburgo
La Puerta de Brandeburgo (en alemán, Brandenburger Tor) es una antigua puerta de entrada aBerlín y uno de los principales símbolos tanto de la ciudad como de Alemania. No se trata de un arco de triunfo, sino que era el acceso, a modo de propileos, al «Nuevo Berlín» de la época. Está situada en el centro actual de la ciudad, en la Plaza de París, formando el final de la avenida Unter den Linden y marcando el comienzo del gran parque Tiergarten y de la avenida Straße des 17. Juni. En las cercanías también se encuentran el Reichstag y la Potsdamer Platz. Importantes sucesos en la historia de Berlín están ligados a la Puerta de Brandeburgo.
Arquitectura[editar]
La puerta de Brandeburgo, obra del arquitecto Carl Gotthard Langhans, es una construcción en piedra arenisca de 26 m de altura, 65,5 m de anchura y 11 m de longitud según el estilo del Neoclasicismo temprano. Recuerda a los propileos de la Acrópolis de Atenas. Posee cinco zonas de paso, de las cuales la central es la más ancha, con dos puertas menores a los lados. Las columnas son de estilo dórico, estriadas, y en su base alcanzan un diámetro de 1,75 m. La parte superior y el interior de las zonas de paso están recubiertas con relieves que representan aHeracles, Marte y la diosa Minerva. Después del derribo de la muralla de la ciudad (1867/68), el discípulo de Friedrich Schinkel, Johann Heinrich Strack, colocó a ambos lados los dos pórticos mayores.
La puerta está coronada por una escultura de cobre de unos 5 m de altura, la Cuadriga, creada por Johann Gottfried Schadow, que representa a la diosa Victoria montada en un carro tirado por cuatro caballos en dirección a la ciudad.
La Puerta de Brandeburgo fue construida entre 1788 y 1791 durante el reinado de Federico Guillermo II de Prusia por Carl Gotthard Langhans, siguiendo el modelo de la puerta de acceso a la Acrópolis de Atenas. En este lugar se encontraba en esas fechas una de las 18 puertas de la muralla de la ciudad deBerlín.
En 1806, después de la batalla de Jena, la Cuadriga fue llevada a París por Napoleón para ser exhibida como trofeo de guerra. Antes de que esto sucediera, Napoleón fue derrocado. Tras la toma de París, el general Ernst von Pfuel fue designado comandante de una parte de la ciudad. A él se debe la recuperación de la estatua para Berlín. En 1814, tropas del general Blücher guardaron la estatua en cajas y la transportaron de regreso a Berlín, donde fue restaurada. Durante esta restauración experimentó un cambio significativo, pues se le agregó la cruz de hierro diseñada por Schinkel.
Hasta 1918, solamente miembros de la familia real, sus invitados y miembros de la familia Pfuel tenían permitido usar el paso central de la puerta. El 30 de enero de 1933, el presidente alemán Paul von Hindenburg, segundo presidente de laRepública de Weimar, nombra a Adolf Hitler canciller de Alemania. Por la tarde, 15.000 hombres de las SA y SS desfilan en una procesión de antorchas a través de la Puerta de Brandeburgo.
Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Puerta sufrió graves daños y la Cuadriga resultó casi completamente destruida. El 21 de septiembre de 1956, el concejo municipal acordó reconstruir la Puerta pese a fuertes divergencias entre las autoridades de la ciudad dividida. A pesar de las acusaciones mutuas, ambas partes aunaron sus esfuerzos y lograron concluir el trabajo el 15 de diciembre de 1957. Las autoridades de Berlín Oriental decidieron rehacer la Cuadriga con los moldes originales, pero quitando el águila y la cruz de hierro por considerarlos símbolos del militarismo alemán.
Con la construcción del Muro de Berlín en 1961, la Puerta de Brandeburgo quedó en tierra de nadie, sin acceso del este ni del oeste. Solamente guardias de frontera e invitados especiales de la RDA tenían acceso al monumento.
En 1991, tras la reunificación de Alemania, la Cuadriga, que no había tenido ningún mantenimiento en 30 años, fue desmontada y restaurada. Durante esta restauración se le agregaron de nuevo el águila y la cruz de hierro. Entre enero de 2001 y octubre de 2002 se emprendió una restauración completa de la Puerta, que permaneció cubierta durante 22 meses. La Puerta de Brandeburgo fue desvelada entre grandes festividades el 3 de octubre de 2002, aniversario de la Reunificación de Alemania.
El 9 de noviembre de 2009, celebrando el 20 aniversario de la caída del Muro de Berlín, se llevaron a cabo diversos actos conmemorativos de la caída del muro, siendo la Puerta de Brandeburgo el escenario central de las celebraciones, entre ellos un concierto conmemorativo del grupo irlandés U2. Unas 100.000 personas participaron bajo la lluvia en el centro de Berlín en los festejos que Alemania organizó para conmemorar los 20 años de la caída del Muro de Berlín. La multitud se apostó a lo largo de los mil dominós gigantes de poliestireno instalados en el centro de Berlín, que fueron derribados para simbolizar la caída del Muro, según los organizadores.

La Diosa de Berlin
El término Koré, plural Korai (griego, Κόρη "mujer joven"), es una tipología escultórica de la época Arcaicade la Antigua Grecia, que consiste en una estatuafemenina en posición de pie, cuya versión masculina del mismo tipo se designa Kourós.
La koré denota una profunda influencia de la estatuariaegipcia.
La koré se esculpía en mármol, se representaba siempre de pie, vestida (con un peplospor ejemplo) y podía tener los dos brazos erguidos a partir del codo, portando en una o en ambas manos un objeto votivo. El rostro, estereotipado, cuyo objetivo no era ser el retrato de una persona real, estaba envuelto en cabello de unavolumetría poco natural, como si tratara de una peluca. La estatua se pintaba, pero al contrario que el kurós ,que era pintado de color marrón, la piel femenina era coloreada de blanco.
Igual que los kuroí, las korai experimentaron una evolución formal a lo largo del tiempo, tornándose, en épocas posteriores, en una figura de formas más suaves y redondeadas, en las que el tejido de la ropa se ajustaba con mayor naturalidad al cuerpo. A partir de ese momento el cuerpo deja de tener el aspecto de haber sido tallado a partir de un bloque de contornos agudos, para parecerse más a una columna, donde las líneas eran más fluidas. Pero, al contrario que el kurós, que presenta siempre la misma tipología (hombre desnudo de pie), la koré se esculpía de variadas formas, sobre todo en lo que concierne a la indumentaria y al peinado, que reflejan la moda de las diferentes localidades donde se esculpía.
Las korai se empleaban como ofrenda votiva a los dioses o para ser colocada sobre un túmulo.
