1/x
does tend to
as you approach zero from the left, and
as you approach from the right:

f(x)=1/x

That these limits are not equal is why 1/0 is undefined.

INFINITY ()

The definition of "becomes infinite"

LET  f(x) =  1
x
, and consider what happens when the values of x

become smaller and smaller. Then the values of f(x) become larger and larger. Eventually, they become larger than any number we might name. We then say that the values of f(x) become infinite, and that the limit of f(x) as x approaches 0 is infinity.

Now, a limit is a number. But infinity, along with its symbol , is not a number, and it is not a place. To "become infinite," or to say that "the limit is infinity," is simply the language we use to describe a property of a variable; namely that because its values become larger than any number we might name, they do not approach a limit.

DEFINITION 4.  "becomes infinite."  We say that a variable "becomes infinite" if, beginning with a certain term in a sequence of its values, the absolute value of that term and any subsequent term we might name  is greater than any positive number we name, however large.

When the variable is x, and it takes on only positive values, then it becomes positively infinite.  We write

Infinity

If x takes on only negative values, it becomes negatively infinite, in which case we write

Infinity

In both cases, we mean:  No matter what large number M we might name, we get to a point in the sequence of values of x that their absolute values become greater than M.

When the variable is a function f(x), and it becomes positively or negatively infinite when x approaches the value c, then we write

Infinity

Although we write the symbol "lim" for limit, those algebraic statements mean:  The limit of f(x) as x approaches c does not exist. Again, a limit is a number. (Definition 2.1.)  When we say that f(x) becomes infinite, we mean that no matter what large number you name, it will be possible to name a value of x  such that the value of f(x) will be larger than that number.

Definition 4 is the definition of "becomes infinite;" it is not the definition of a limit.

As for the symbol , we employ it in algebraic statements to signify that the definition of  becomes infinite has been satisfied. That symbol by itself has no meaning.

As an example, here is the graph of the function   y  =   1
x
 :

Infiity

Let us see what happens to the values of y as x approaches 0 from the right:

Infiity

As the sequence of values of x become very small numbers, then the sequence of values of y, the reciprocals, , become very large numbers. The values of y will become and remain greater, for example, than 10100000000.

y becomes infinite.  We write:

If x approaches 0 from the left, then the values of  1
x
 become large

negative numbers.  In that case, we write

Infiity

When a function becomes infinite as x approaches a value c, then the function is discontinuous at x = c, and the straight line  x = c  is a vertical asymptote of the graph. (Topic 18 of Precalculus.)  The graph of

   y 1
x
 , then, is discontinuous at x = 0, and the straight line x = c is a

vertical asymptote.

Next, let us consider the case when x becomes infinite, that is, when its values become large positive numbers to the extreme right of 0.

Infiity

In that case,   1
x
becomes a very small number, namely 0.  We write

Infiity

We should read that as "the limit as x becomes infinite," not as "x approaches infinity," because again, infinity is neither a number nor a place. On the other hand, we could read that however we please ("the limit as x becomes dizzy"), as long as whatever expression we use refers to the condition of Definition 4.

See First Principles of Euclid's Elements, Commentary on the Definitions. See especially that a definition is nominal; it asserts only how a word or a name will be used; and we must agree to that.

Finally, when x becomes infinite negatively, that is, when it assumes

values to the extreme left of 0 (−), then again  1
x
 approaches 0.  We

write

Infiity

In other words, whenever x becomes infinite positively or negatively,

  the values of  y 1
x
approach the horizontal line  y = 0.  That line is

called a horizontal asymptote of the graph.

   Problem 1.   Evaluate   Infiity

Infiity

At   π
2
, tan x does not exist.  (Topic 15 and Topic 18 of Trigonometry.)
  As x approaches   π
2
from the left, tan x becomes larger than any number

we might name. (Definition 4.)

Limits of rational functions

A rational function is a quotient of polynomials  (Topic 6 of Precalculus).  It will have this form:

f (x)
g (x)

where f and g are polynomials (g Is not equal to 0).

Apart from the constant term, each term of a polynomial will have a factor xn (n 1).  Therefore let us investigate the following limits.

c could be any positive constant.  The student should complete each right-hand side.

To see the answer, pass your mouse over the colored area.
To cover the answer again, click "Refresh" ("Reload").
Do it yourself first!

1) Infinity  =   0

2a) Infinity  =
  n even.

2b) Infinity  =
  n odd.
2c) Infinity  =   −∞
  n odd.
  Compare  y 1
x
 above, where n = 1.
3) Infinity  =

4) Infinity  =
   Example.   Prove:   Infinity

Solution.   Divide the numerator and denominator by the highest power of x.  In this case, divide them by x2:

Infinity

According to 1), above, the limit of each term that contains x is 0.  Therefore by the theorems of Topic 2, we have the required answer.

In similar cases, the first step is:  Divide the numerator and denominator by the power of x that appears in the leading term of either one.

   Problem 2.   Infinity = 4

The result follows on dividing both numerator and denominator by x.

   Problem 3.   Infinity = Infinity

In other words:  When the numerator and denominator are of equal degree,
then the limit as x becomes infinite is equal to the quotient of the leading coefficients.

Problem 4.

  Infinity = Infinity = Infinity = 0.

In the following, the rational function is the reciprocal of the one above:

  Infinity = Infinity =

This problem illustrates:

When the degree of the denominator is greater than the degree of the numerator -- that is, when the denominator dominates -- then the limit as x becomes infinite is 0.  But when the numerator dominates -- when the degree of the numerator is greater -- then the limit as x becomes infinite is infinity.

Change of variable

Consider this limit:

Infinity

Rather than have the variable approach 0, we sometimes prefer that it become infinite.  In that case, we do a change of variable.  We put

x = 1
z
  or   1
n
 or   1
t
,  it does not matter.  For, x approaching 0 is equivalent to

z becoming infinite.  Then

Infinity

On replacing x with  1
z
, we let z become infinite.  The limit remains 1.

Where will this come up?  In the limit from which we calculate the number e :

Infinity

(Lesson 15.)

Problem 5.   In the above limit, change the variable to n, and let it become infinite.

Pi or π is a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidean space; this is the same value as the ratio of a circle's area to the square of its radius. It is approximately equal to 3.14159 in the usual decimal notation (see the table for its representation in some other bases). π is one of the most important mathematical and physical constants: many formulae from mathematics, science, and engineering involve π.
Circumference = π × diameter

Area of the circle = π × area of the shaded square

Calculating Pi number
π can be empirically estimated by drawing a large circle, then measuring its diameter and circumference and dividing the circumference by the diameter. Another geometry-based approach, due to Archimedes,[19] is to calculate the perimeter, Pn , of a regular polygon with n sides circumscribed around a circle with diameter d. Then

That is, the more sides the polygon has, the closer the approximation approaches π. Archimedes determined the accuracy of this approach by comparing the perimeter of the circumscribed polygon with the perimeter of a regular polygon with the same number of sides inscribed inside the circle. Using a polygon with 96 sides, he computed the fractional range:

I will say only that his ARCHIMEDES axiom (287-212 BC) resulting from the conclusion that seems logical in our OLD thinking and reference, namely that a circle can be compared and even overlapped with circumscribed polygon with infinite number of sides is not accurate!

The modern scientist will say to you if you give them the TRUE PI NUMBER "Archimedes established margin that included PI: between 3.1408 (223/71) and 3.1428 (22 / 7), so the your result are not included in this interval, so that is false!"

For the moment all the guys out there uses PI=3.1415(....)
but the true Pi number is 3,1446(...) go and measure on terrain!!! practical !!!

PI=4/radical(PHI, the golden ratio = 1.61803399(...)) = 3.14460550981492(...) !!!
The Golden Ratio!!!

Facts:
According to the true pi number the diameter of the Large Hadron Collider is smaller with 8.13 meters!
According to the true pi number the GREAT PYRAMID IS P.E.R.F.E.C.T.!!!!!!!
According to the true pi number N.A.S.A. is using the true PI number. lol
According to the true pi number the humans will be able to build more perfect buildings (and durable ffs!!!)
ACCORDING TO THE TRUE PI NUMBER THE MARKO RODIN SINGLE TORUS COIL WILL BE UPGRADED AND MORE EFFICIENT!!! and a little bigger in diameter )
Correction: PI=4/sqrt(PHI)=3.144605511029693144(...)...without doubt...MEASURED!...But, pay attention, please, about the"PARADOX OF THE SMALL ANGLES"up to sqrt[sqrt(89)]=3.071478656(...) sexag.deg. I'll explain you, later!
