Online dating starts when you see someone's profile picture.
Until you open the profile, you hardly know what the education, hobbies, food preferences, etc. of this person are. So yes, online dating is definitely more superficial in its basic form.
I don't use much, but I have used OKC and Tinder. The likes of OKC, which force you to fill out a profile with your likes and dislikes, have algorithms to match you with other people based on their likes and dislikes rather than physical appearance, so you can claim it's not 100% appearance. Tinder is purely based on looks, as you can't see ANYTHING other than a photo of a person. And unless it's a photo of them doing some activity, you have no idea what this person likes to do in life.
But it also depends on what each person makes of it, as Anon said. I also read the person's profile to see if there is something in common between the both of us or nothing at all. But if someone is looking for a casual fuck, then most other things fly out the window and only the physical trappings remain - for most people.
In contrast, most traditional dating for young people is still fairly based on the person's appearance. But it's a subtle mixture with non-materialistic parts that can't be quantified without a lot of examination. |
