LA CONSTELACIÓN
Según la cultura griega y occidental ha distribuido las estrellas en grupos y el llamado "zodiaco" a lo largo de la historia, Ofiuco es una de las constelaciones cortadas por la proyección del plano de la órbita de la Tierra, y desde tierra ese plano nosotros lo percibimos como el camino anual del Sol (la eclíptica). El hecho de que el plano de la órbita de la Tierra corte por esa región de Ofiuco viene siendo así desde hace millones de años y ello no se ve afectado por el movimiento de bamboleo del eje de la Tierra (causa del llamado "movimiento de precesión"). Si pasas el cursor del ratón sobre la imagen inicial puedes leer las "descripciones" del entorno de la constelación de Ofiuco.
La imagen nos sitúa desde el punto de vista de Orión, detrás del planeta Agua y Tierra, al ras del plano de su ecuador durante algún momento de la primera quincena del mes de diciembre y frente a la región de Ofiuco. Nuestro planeta está unos 23 grados inclinado respecto a su ángulo recto con el plano de su órbita al Sol, y por eso el Sol aparece en esa imagen unos 23 grados por "debajo" y ante la región sur de Ofiuco. Esto significa que Ofiuco está -igual que la constelación de Orión- en el Ecuador de la Esfera celeste de la Tierra (tal como vemos las estrellas desde el planeta), aunque debido a su extensión también "invade" el camino circular anual de la Tierra (el plano de la órbita), de modo que durante unos 18 días (30 de noviembre a 17 de diciembre) vemos al Sol en la región inferior de Ofiuco. Este tramo de estrellas catalogadas como pertenecientes a la región de Ofiuco está ocupado en el Mapa astrológico por la primera parte del signo de Sagitario, como si éste hubiera sido "estirado".
Llamamos "constelaciones" (y les damos nombres) a grupos de estrellas que vemos como puntos aparentemente relacionados entre sí, aunque las estrellas que los forman están más o menos separadas en la profundidad de la dimensión espacial (las 3 primeras dimensiones de la realidad). Realmente, tanto la constelación (como grupo) y su nombre sólo están en nuestra memoria, que es el filtro con el que observamos la negrura salpicada de luces. Por eso, mantener o cambiar el diseño y los nombres de lo que tenemos grabado en la memoria particular o grupal no cambia lo que hay en el Cielo espacial.
Una característica del diseño zodiacal que recrea la mitología griega es la relación entre Ofiuco y Sagitario, que son constelaciones contiguas, pues mientras Ofiuco representa a Asclepio, legendario médico griego que llegara a resucitar personas muertas (como después la cultura cristiana/católica consideraría a Jesús), el signo de Sagitario está simbolizado por un centauro con arco y flecha (y de ahí el prefijo "sagitta", que significa "flecha"), y en la mitología griega Quirón es un centauro conocedor de los secretos del arte de la medicina y es maestro de Asclepio. En nuestro firmamento ambas constelaciones están juntas y unidas prácticamente en el punto en el que se haya el Centro galáctico como si -alegóricamente- estos personajes tomaran la energía vital curativa de la fuente del ser galáctico.
Ofiuco es uno de los grupos de estrellas más extensos de nuestro Firmamento. Realmente es poco distinguible a simple vista pero es significativa porque debido a su extensión en vertical es la única de las 88 por la que pasa tanto el Ecuador celeste (la proyección del ecuador de la Tierra) como el plano de la órbita de la Tierra (la eclíptica, que es la mediana de la autopista zodiacal, la franja de constelaciones zodiacales). Aquí podemos verlo en esta escena desde un punto de vista exterior y lateral a nuestro yo terrestre.

Dado que el Planeta Tierra está inclinado con respecto al plano de su órbita, su ecuador proyectado al Firmamento corta por Ofiuco. La fecha correspondiente a la posición de la Nave Azul en la escena es la del 9 de diciembre, día intermedio del periodo durante el que el Sol pasa por Ofiuco. La escena nos sirve para orientarnos con respecto a la inclinación de la Madre Tierra, el plano de su órbita, el Sol y Ofiuco, de forma que podemos comprender la imagen siguiente vista desde Tierra.

El Sol aparece a mitad de su camino por Ofiuco hacia el 9 de diciembre. Realmente es la Nave Tierra la que está en el punto de su órbita desde el que veríamos esa escena cuando en nuestra memoria cronológica es el día gregoriano 9 de diciembre. La región de Ofiuco está casi en el meridiano (línea vertical de polo celeste a polo celeste) en el que está localizado el Centro de la Galaxia, a 4 grados por debajo de la aparente trayectoria del Sol (en la imagen, la línea roja). Concretamente la estrella Ras Alhague (en el extremo norte de la constelación) está prácticamente en ese meridiano. Actualmente vemos al Sol en esa posición por encima del Centro galáctico (a 4 grados) cada 19 de diciembre (hace 2000 años ocurría el 24 de noviembre, y el año 29 hubo un eclipse en Jerusalén). Y también, al otro lado de nuestra posición en la Tierra, está la constelación de Orión.
Durante los 18 días que van desde el 30 de noviembre al 17 de diciembre, la Nave Agua y Tierra transita entre la estrella Sol y la constelación de Tauro mientras al otro lado del Sol está la región sur de Ofiuco. Aquí vemos la sección de órbita recorrida por el Planeta Aire durante esos 18 días hasta casi el punto por el que cruza con el Eje galáctico.

Y, al otro lado de la órbita, la Nave Tierra transita entre el Sol y Ofiuco durante el periodo entre el 1 y 18 de junio gregoriano. Como vemos en la siguiente escena, el final de Ofiuco y el comienzo de Sagitario coincide prácticamente con el paso de la Tierra entre el Sol y el Centro de la Galaxia el 19 de junio.
La estrella principal de Ofiuco es llamada Rasalhague y está unos 60 años-luz (1 año luz equivale a unos 800 sistemas solares). Es la estrella más al norte de la constelación y marca su frontera. La estrella Sabik está a 66 años luz. También en la región de Ofiuco hay una estrella que en su momento fue investigada por el astrónomo Edward Barnard. Es la estrella de Barnard.

En esta imagen vemos a la Tierra desde el Sol un 21 de junio (solsticio), y a la constelación de Ofiuco al fondo, identificable en referencia a la constelación del Cisne y al llamado "Triángulo de Verano". A escala interestelar o en conciencia solar, la Velox Barnardi (catalogada como perteneciente a Ofiuco) y el Sol están tan cerca (sólo a 6 años luz) como a escala métrica las personas que conviven en una misma vivienda, y muchas estrellas catalogadas como pertenecientes a Ofiuco están suficientemente alejadas como para que realmente la estrella de Barnard y el Sol (y las que están en un radio-luz de 6 años-luz en torno al Sol) formen parte de un grupo propio (pulsa en el siguiente link para ver las estrellas en un radio de 100 años-luz).
Igual que desde la Tierra, debido a su particular inclinación, podemos ver a la constelación de la Osa Menor (con la Estrella polar) en el Centro del Hemisferio norte de la Esfera celeste de la Tierra, el Centro del Hemisferio sur de la Esfera celeste del planeta Urano señala a la constelación de Ofiuco (y concretamente la estrella Sabik), pues Urano tiene una inclinación diferente a la de la Tierra.

SISTEMA PLANETARIO DEL SOL
BRISAS DE OFIUCO
Recientemente, personas científicas que observan el entorno del planeta Tierra, detectaron que existe una brisa de helio -no de hielo- que procede de la región de Ofiuco. Haciendo una interpretación metafórica puedo verlo como la brisa cósmica que causa la inclinación del Planeta, a modo del viento que escora a un barco, como la Nave Tierra cuyo palo mayor -y único- es el Eje de rotación. De hecho, 5 días después de que el Sol sale de Ofiuco tiene lugar el momento del solsticio en el que la Tierra presenta su eje inclinado hacia el Sol mostrándole el polo sur y ocultándole el polo norte. Es decir, que la brisa procede de Ofiuco, rebasa al Sol y llega al Planeta Agua inclinándolo. Alegóricamente y poéticamente hablando, Ofiuco sería como el Eolo cósmico que sopla escorando a la Nave Tierra cuyo Palo Mayor (y único) es su eje de rotación.
SISTEMA PLANETARIO DEL SOL
9 OCTUBRE 1604: UNA SUPERNOVA EN OFIUCO. LA NEBULOSA DE KEPLER O ESTRELLA DE KEPLER.
Ofiuco fue constelación protagonista de la última explosión de supernova observada por la Humanidad. Fue en octubre de 1604 y más concretamente en la región del pie de Ofiuco, un poco más arriba del plano de la órbita de la Tierra (la eclíptica, la mediana aparentemente recorrida por el Sol). La explosión fue vista desde la Tierra a pesar de su distancia de unos 13.000 años luz, distancia que recorre un rayo de luz durante 13.000 órbitas de la Tierra (durante las que Neptuno, el planeta grande más exterior, da 78,78 órbitas). Fue vista por astrónomos como Brunowski en Praga, Altobelli en Verona, Clavius en Roma y Capra, y Marius en Padua. Virgo, is depicted as a virgin in every ancient reference, holding in one hand abranch, and in the other a sheaf of grain, or seed, always associated with a child, "Shesh nu" in Egyptian, the desired son, the symbol of the incarnationof God on earth.
Libra, the scales or in the earliest zodiacs, an altar. Its meaning is the measuring of a price. One of its stars in Arabic means, "the price which is deficient",while opposite is a star whose name means, "the price which covers," or atonement. Libra symbolizes the price of the conflict, the deficient works of man compared to the perfect and finished sacrifice of Jesus accomplished on the cross.

Ophiuchus 's foot is stung (wounded foot, like Oedipus) by the upraised tail of the scorpion, his other foot is above the scorpion's heart. He restrains the serpent coiled around him from taking a crown.Ophiuchus depicts the earliest prophecy in the Bible, "I will put enmity between the serpent and the offspring of the woman, it will strike at his heel, and he will crush (the serpent's) head."
Sagittarius,in the oldest pictures of the zodiac is a cherubim. This symbol is situated 1/3 rd of the way around the zodiacal circle. It had the body of both lionand bull with wings of an eagle and the head of a woman. Sagittarius is the symbol of the incarnation, both God and man, animals representing the four corners of the heavens and symbolizing the aspects of God's redemptive work on this earth, he is poised with his arrow drawn and pointed at theheart of the scorpion. Underneath him is the southern cross.
Capricorn, the goat with the tail of the fish. To the Hebrews, the goat was the sin offering, Capricorn is posed with his foot under him and his head bowed,as if in death. The second half of this symbol is the tail of a fish, the most prolific creature in nature, the fish lives in the waters, symbol of life and God's spirit. Out of the son of God's death, comes everlasting life.
Aquarius,the water bearer, the one pouring out life giving waters that symbolize God's spirit, into the mouth of the fish.
Pisces, the fishes connected to the neck of the sea monster, one points to the center of heaven the other follows the ecliptic, the path of the earth around the sun. "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Aries, the lamb prepared from the foundations of the world, the unblemished sacrifice for mankind. with his foot poised to strike off the tether attaching the fishes to the neck of the sea monster. "He (Jesus Christ), came to set the captives free".
Taurus, the Bull. His horns, symbolizing God's judgment, are pointed to the earth,one stabs the heal of a shepherd "Aquilla", who holds his flock, Christ the good shepherd, received in our place God's absolute judgment. In the bull's neck is the Pleiades, the congregating of the judges, who come back to earth after their resurrection to judge the earth with Christ at his second coming.
Gemini, the twins. Castor is the suffering redeemer, and Pollux is the king. Symbols of the first and second coming of Christ.
Cancer, the crab. Originally it was the fortress, the impregnable enclosure of protection.In Egypt it was a scarab, the beetle that hatched from the ground and flew to heaven, the stronghold of the saved.
Leo, the great lion. "The conquering lion of Judah", Jesus Christ, who will come again. The king that the apostle John traced back to that tribe of Israel. In his heart is the star called Regulus.
This is the whole story of God's atonement work on earth, its beginning and ending are symbolized by the sphinx - combining Virgo and Leo.

At this point it will be helpful to understand some basic principles of the meaning of numbers in scripture. With insight into the symbolic meaning that numbers possesas they occur in the Bible one will understand the full meaning of the "riddle of the sphinx" The study of the meaning of numbers in scripture is called Biblical Numerics or Biblical Numerology. This study is intrinsicto theology and history of the Bible because of the language it was written in, Hebrew and Greek. These two languages share the aspect of using letters for words and also a system for counting. The spiritual meaning for numbers that continuously show up in scripture, intentionally put there by God,can be discerned. The following list is a brief description of the symbolic meaning of primary numbers.
One: symbol of unity, primacy and beginning, in all languages.
Two: first number that can be divided from itself, it symbolizes division or difference.
Three: Divine perfection. Trinity. 3 also refers to the necessary dimensions for physicality.
Four: The number of Creation, the 3 of God plus the 1, a new beginning.
Five: 4+1, Creation plus a New Beginning. 5 = grace or favor.
Six: The number of imperfection, the number of man. Creation plus division 4+2.
Seven: Completion. The number of spiritual perfection. Creation was completed, God rested on the7th day.
Eight: is the number of resurrection 7+1 completion plus newness.
Nine: Symbol of judgment. Akin to the number 6, 3x3=9 and 3+3=6, it can refer to the End.
Ten: Symbolizes completeness of order -- after 10 the numbers repeat.
Eleven: The subversion and undoing of 10 - a flawed addition to that perfect order.
Twelve: is the symbol of governmental perfection or rule 3x4 -- God's rule over His creation.
The Greek myth Oedipus Rex contains revealing symbology -- too much to address in this article. But for our purposes, let's examine the riddle of the sphinx. The monsterous Sphinx asked Oedipus: "What speaks with one voice, yet in the morning walks on four legs, walks at noon on two legs and in the evening walks on three legs?" Upon hearing the correct answer, the Sphinx left her lofty perch and fell to the rocks below. The symbolism alludes to the true identity of the sphinx as a rebellious cherub -- perched in the mountainous high places -- literally amongst the stones -- outsideThebes, the City of Light. The man who defeats this rebellious cherub will have a messianic name, Oedipus, literally wounded in the foot. The man who was named Wounded Foot, upon defeating the rebel cherub, redeems his promised bride at the end of Oedipus Rex, taking his place as king.
The sphinx or wrathful cherub, asked the question, "What speaks with one voice, yet walks on four feet in the morning, two feet at noon and three feet in the evening?" The question decoded using Bible numerics, would read: "What creature, spoken into creation by God, (one) walked before God in perfection at the beginning, (four) fell from grace and was divided from God, (two) and will be redeemed and made perfect by God, (three)?
The answer: man.The real question couched ingeniously in the riddle was this, who will redeem man?
The earliest prophecy in the Bible concerning the messiah who will defeat the serpent, or the rebel cherub is in Genesis 3:15. Oedipus the Wounded Foot is symbolicof the coming Messiah, who would be born of the lineage of Adam and Eve. The defeater of the Greek Sphinx -- the defeater of death -- would speak the answer and the cherub would be destroyed. That is, The Word is Wounded Foot's weapon, and the means by which the bride, and all of the land, would be redeemed.
"From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your
offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush
your head, and you will strike his heel." Genesis 3:15
 According to Menzel, author of A Field Guide to the Stars , "Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, may well be an alternative form of Hercules, for the giant frequently had to deal with snakes, beginning in infancy when he strangled the serpentin his crib. Ophiuchus bears Serpens, the Serpent, in his hands, and his right foot is almost touching the stinger of the Scorpion". The offspring of Adam & Eve, the prophesied Messiah, "Bears the Serpent" as a representation of sin, and redeems all man through his crucifixion and resurrection. Ophiuchusis the resurrected Asclepius [also, Esculapius ], the healer whose symbolis the serpent staff. The learned Greek hero Asclepius was killed because he was able to raise the dead. Here is a brief but illuminating account:
Orion (the blinded demigod who had regained his eyesight) journeyed to the island of Crete. There he met the beautiful Artemis, goddess of the Moon, also called Kynthiabecause she and her twin brother, Apollo, were born on Mount Kynthos. Apollo disapproved of the union between his sister the Moon Goddess and Orion. His sister was so involved with Orion that she forgot to carry the Moon across the sky. Apollo was disgusted with his sister and thought the only way to solve this problem was to kill Orion.
One day Apollo sent Orion to the sea to catch some fish. When Orion waded through the sea,his head just above water, Apollo called his sister and pointed out the unrecognizable black dot far away. He tauntingly told her that although she was good with her bow, even she had her limits, and it was highly unlikely that she could hit the tiny target. Artemis felt insulted, immediately fit an arrow to her bow, and shot the target. Her aim was perfect, as always.The arrow pierced Orion's head, killing him instantly. Artemis was horrified to discover her mistake. She took Orion's body to her nephew Esculapius (son of Apollo & Coronis), begging him to resurrect Orion. Before Esculapius could act, a thunderbolt from Zeus destroyed Orion's body, but killed Esculapius as well. Artemis the Moon Goddess set Orion in the heavens, and Zues, realizing that Apollo's son Esculapius didn't deserve his fate, set him in the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus.
Another reference to the man who is victorious over one the many manifestations of the rebel cherub is found in the typology of Orion. According to Bullinger's The Witness of the Stars: His name is given as Ha-ga-t, which means thisis he who triumphs. The hieroglyphic characters below read Oar. Orion was anciently spelt Oarion, from the Hebrew root, which means light. So that Orion means coming forth as light. The ancient Akkadian was Ur-ana,the light of heaven.
The constellationis mentioned by name, as being perfectly well known both by name and appearance, in the time of Job; and as being an object of familiar knowledge at that early period of the world's history. See Job 9:9; 38:31, and Amos 5:8 (Heb.Chesil, which means a strong one, a hero, or giant).
 The picture presents us with "the Light of the world." His left foot is significantly placed upon the head of the enemy. He is girded with a glorious girdle,studded with three brilliant stars; and upon this girdle is hung a sharp sword. Its handle proves that this mighty Prince is come forth in a new character. He is again proved to be "the Lamb that was slain," for the hilt of this sword is in the form of the head and body of a lamb. In hisright hand he lifts on high his mighty club; while in his left he holds forth the token of his victory -- the head and skin of the "roaring lion" [ww - he has been victorious over the rebel cherub/sphinx] We ask in wonder,"Who is this?" and the names of the stars give us the answer.
The brightest, a(in the right shoulder), is named Betelgeuz, which means the coming (Mal 3:2) of the branch.
The next, b (in theleft foot), is named Rigel, or Rigol, which means the foot that crusheth.The foot is lifted up, and placed immediately over the head of the enemy,as though in the very act of crushing it. Thus, the name of the star bespeaks the act.
The next star, g (in the left shoulder), is called Bellatrix, which means quickly coming,or swiftly destroying.
The name of the fourth star, d (one of the three in the belt), carries us back to the old, old story, that this glorious One was once humbled; that His heel was once bruised. Its name is Al Nitak, the wounded One. * Similarly the star k (in the right leg) is called Saiph, bruised, which is the very word usedin Genesis 3:15, thus connecting Orion with the primeval prophecy. LikeOphiuchus, he has one leg bruised; while, with the other, he is crushing the enemy under foot.
It is no mere coincidence that the constellations and star names echo the messianic prophecy of the "man" with the wounded foot, who crushes the enemy.
And it is also no surprise that the narrative in the heavens would be twisted by those cherubs who, pre-rebellion, were present at the creation of the heavens.

The Bible describes a history of our solar system, and the ancient non-human occupants of the solar system. Popular culture seems to be obsessed with the ancient mysteries of the Pyramid and Sphinx of Giza, and at the same time, futuristic science fiction scenarios like those in Star Trek, Close Encounters etc. Recently, CNN featured photos of what seems to be a sphinx-face on Mars. NASA scientists have confirmed that Mars was once a more habitable planet, and legions of fans of the X-Files are convinced that the Truth is Out There -- the truth that there is life on other planets. Or perhaps the truth that is being discovered by researchers like Hancock and Hoagland -- that some other civilization of scientists and builders came before us, and as Hoagland suggests, "we are the Martians".
If there proves to be a giant Sphinx Face on Mars, the identity of these monument builders should not be a mystery: Genesis 6:4 These non-human builders populate the Bible, and are the progenitors of those beings of myth and legend, demi-gods, heroes and men of name.
The typology of the Martian Sphinx confirms that its construction is of angelic origin.
The Sphinx face on Mars unites Virgo and Leo, the human face and that of a lion.

En 1666, Luis XIV de Francia autorizó la construcción de un observatorio en París para medir la longitud. Este fue el comienzo del Meridiano Cero de París. El meridiano es una línea imaginaria que forma la mitad de un círculo máximo y une los polos norte y sur. Los meridianos son, por tanto, líneas de longitud; la latitud y longitud se utilizan conjuntamente para situar puntos en el globo terráqueo a través de coordenadas esféricas.

Francia se abstuvo de votar. Hasta 1911 los franceses consideraron el Meridiano Cero como un rival de Greenwich para propósitos de mantener un registro del tiempo, y en 1914 para propósitos de navegación. |
Hércules es una constelación para observar con primáticos o telescopio. La estrella más brillante que tiene es Kornephoros de magnitud 2,8 y la más interesante es Rasalgethi, que es una estrella variable y doble, de magnitud 5,8; sus componentes son naranja y azul y se distinguen con telescopio.
Es imprescindible ver M13, uno de los mejores cúmulos globulares que se pueden observar en el hemisferio norte. Con buenas condiciones de oscuridad se puede distinguir a simple vista, con prismaticos se ve mejor y con telescopio se puede ver como una conglomeración de innumerables estrellas.
También se puede ver otro cúmulo globular, M92, y la nebulosa planetaria, NGC 6210 que es pequeña pero brillante, en la que destaca una estrella azul central. |

La Serpiente, por la forma alargada que tiene. Esta constelación se divide en dos: la Cabeza, Serpens Caput, y la Cola, Serpens Cauda. Es una constelación larga, y la parte de la cola está en una zona rica de la Via Láctea: por eso está plagada de cúmulos que se pueden ver sobre todo con telescopio.
En esa zona está una estrella roja llamada Estrella de Barnard, que está a 5,9 años luz de la Tierra: la tercera más cercana.
Uno de los cúmulos es M 19, cerca de Scorpio. Está en una zona ocupada por nubes de gas y polvo que se pueden distinguir.

Messier 19 or M19 (also designated NGC 6273) is a globular cluster in the constellation Ophiuchus. It was discovered by Charles Messier on June 5, 1764[5] and added to his catalogue of comet-like objects that same year. It was resolved into individual stars by William Herschel in 1784. His son, John Herschel, described it as "a superb cluster resolvable into countless stars".[6] The cluster is located 4.5° WSW of Theta Ophiuchi and is just visible as a fuzzy point of light using 50 mm (2.0 in) binoculars. Using a telescope with a 25.4 cm (10.0 in) aperture, the cluster shows an oval appearance with a 3′ × 4′ core and a 5′ × 7′ halo.[5]
M19 is one of the most oblate of the known globular clusters.[6] This flattening may not accurately reflect the physical shape of the cluster because the emitted light is being strongly absorbed along the eastern edge. This is the result of extinction caused by intervening gas and dust. When viewed in the infrared, the cluster shows almost no flattening.[7] It lies at a distance of about 28.7 kly (8.8 kpc) from the Solar System,[3] and is quite near to the Galactic Center at only about 6.5 kly (2.0 kpc) away.[8]
This cluster contains an estimated 1,100,000 times the mass of the Sun[3] and it is around 11.9 billion years old.[4] The stellar population includes four Cepheids and RV Tauri variables, plus at least one RR Lyrae variable for which a period is known.[9] Observations made during the ROSAT mission failed to reveal any low-intensity X-ray sources.[10]

De acuerdo a la mitología griega, representa al escorpión que mató al cazador Orión, al picarlo, y como consecuencia “fueron colocados en puntos opuestos en el firmamento”. Cuando Scorpius sale por el horizonte este, Orión se acuesta por el oeste y viceversa.
Scorpius es una de las constelaciones zodiacales más fáciles de reconocer. Su largo aguijón está metido en la región “lechosa” del cielo, hacia el centro de nuestra galaxia, la Vía Láctea y termina en una cola bifurcada.
Su estrella más brillante, Antares, es una roja súper gigante de brillo variable.
Por su coloración, su nombre significa: “Rival de Marte”.
Se encuentra más alto en el cielo nocturno en junio y julio. El Sol pasa brevemente por esta constelación del 23 al 29 de noviembre.

Esta constelación está situada entre Libra al oeste y Sagitario al este. Por el norte tiene la constelación de Ofiuco. El mejor tiempo para contemplarla es el verano.
Hasta el siglo III a.C. pertenecían a esta constelación dos estrellas de la próxima constelación Libra, que representaban las pinzas del escorpión. Antiguamente esta constelación se representaba unida a la que hoy se conoce como libra (que no existía, se cree que fueron los romanos quienes la imaginaron primero). Las estrellas que hoy se conocen como alfa y beta librae representaban las pinzas sur y norte del escorpión, lo que les dio su nombre actual:
- Alfa librae: Zuben Elgenubi (garra del sur)
- Beta librae: Zuben Elschemali (garra del norte)
Historias en el Cielo
Hace unos 5000 años, el paso del Sol por la constelación de Escorpio significa el inicio del Otoño, por esta razón, Antares era considerada una de las 'Cuatro estrellas Reales'.
Antares es una destacable estrella roja cuyo nombre significa 'el rival de Ares (Marte)'. Para los antiguos astrólogos, la constelación estaba regida por el Signo de Marte y tenía un carácter maléfico. Se la denominaba 'la que anuncia la muerte' y se suponía que sus nativos eran propensos a la violencia y el crimen.
En la mitología griega se dan cita tres constelaciones que se observan juntas en el cielo nocturno. Las historias de Orión el cazador y Ofiuco (Asclepio), están así unidas: En cierta ocasión, Orión alardeó de poder matar a todas las bestias salvajes. La diosa Gea le castigó por su arrogancia enviándole un escorpión que le picara en el talón.
Así, al observar las constelaciones, se ve que conforme Escorpio asciende por el horizonte, Orión muere y se pone por el Oeste. Asclepio curó a Orión y aplastó a Escorpio con el pie. Efectivamente, en las constelaciones, Ofiuco (Asclepio), pisa al Escorpión mientras Orión renace por el horizonte Oriental.

Su nombre deriva del griego anti Ares y significa el rival de Ares o el opuesto a Ares, debido a su color rojizo, por el cual rivalizaba en el cielo nocturno con el planeta Marte, símbolo del dios Ares. Su distintivo color rojizo ha hecho de ella un objeto de interés en muchas sociedades del pasado. Está situada en el centro de la constelación de Scorpio, lo cual explica su otro nombre, de origen árabe, Kalb al-Akrab (el corazón del escorpión). Los romanos llamaban a Antares "cor Sorpii", es decir, "el corazón del escorpión". Muchos de los templos egipcios están orientados de tal manera que la luz de Antares jugaba un papel importante en las ceremonias que se llevaban a cabo. Para los persas era Satevis una de las cuatro Estrellas reales guardianes del cielo.

Antares es el nombre propio de la estrella α Scorpii, la estrella más brillante de la constelación de Escorpio y la dieciseisava más brillante de todo el cielo nocturno. Junto con Aldebaran, Spica y Regulus está entre las cuatro estrellas más brillantes cerca de la eclíptica. Antares es una estrella doble, situada en el cuerpo del escorpión, escoltada por dos estrellas, la sigma ( F ) al noroeste y la tau ( J ) al sureste.
Se trata de una supergigante roja, de clase M1 Iab, cuyo radio es de 624 millones de km, unos 700 radios solares. Si se situase en el lugar de nuestro Sol su superficie se encontraría entre la órbita de Marte y la de Júpiter. Antares se encuentra a aproximadamente 600 años luz de la Tierra aproximándose a nosotros a la velocidad de 3.4 km/s: este valor es debido tanto a su movimiento propio como al desplazamiento orbital del Sol alrededor del centro de la Vía Láctea. Su luminosidad es 9.000 veces mayor que la del Sol y con su masa se podrían hacer 15 ó 20 estrellas como la nuestra. Su descomunal tamaño en comparación con su masa da como resultado una densidad media muy baja, mucho menor que la del Sol.
A pocos minutos de arco al SO de Antares puede verse, con unos prismáticos, el cúmulo globular M4 como una bola de nieve algodonosa; a través de cualquier telescopio de aficionado se puede resolver en estrellas gigantes anaranjadas, cuyo color se aprecia en fotografías de larga exposición.

Graffias / Akrab (β Scorpii; ): esta estrella tiene dos nombres, el primero de origen griego con el significado de "pinza del cangrejo" y el segundo de origen árabe con el significado de "escorpión". Es una estrella 2.600 veces más luminosa que el Sol y constituye un sistema quíntuple, del cual dos estrellas sólo se detectan mediante el espectroscopio. No es, contrariamente a lo que indica su denominación β, la segúnda estrella más brillante de la constelación de Escorpio sino la sexta. Se encuentra a una distancia de 600 años-luz

Jabbah (ν Sco / ν Scorpii) es un sistema de estrella de la constelación de Scorpius, su nombre proviene del árabe y significa "frente".El sistema está formado por cinco estrellas separadas en dos grupos por 41 segundos de arco. El primer grupo está formado por Nu Scorpii A, una binaria espectroscópica, y por Nu Scorpii B a una distancia de 1.3 segundos de arco. El segundo frupo está formado por Nu Scorpii C y Nu Scorpii D separadas por 2.4 segundos de arco. Jabbah es la estrella que causa la nebulosa de la reflexión catalogada como IC 4592.
