Lot Essay

Sea-bathing and music in Venice.

Einstein sends greetings from a trip to Venice in the company of his father, enjoying 'sea-bathing ... and music in the most beautiful sunshine!'. Hermann Einstein's message reports their departure the next day for Verona and Isola della Scala, and their expected return to Milan on the Friday.

Einstein mentions hisplanned trip to Venice with his father in a number of letters to his future wife, Mileva, in August 1900, depicting a rather more business-oriented expedition: his father had 'promised me in his last letter that he will visit Venice with me, because our power plants are not far from there'. In fact, his relations with his parents had been thrown into crisis by his announcement earlier in the summer that he intended to marry Mileva, and the trip with his father may have been intended to mend…

A trip to Venice with his father, Venice, 11 September 1900. Estimate: £2,500-3,500. Offered in Einstein and Family: Letters and Portraits, 2-9 May 2018, Online

In 1900 Einstein’s father, Hermann, was in failing health, and his electrical engineering business was struggling. For a brief period, the 21-year-old Albert seems to have contemplated taking over the family business. Given his famously absent-minded and impractical character, it is questionable whether he would have been suited to such a role. This postcard was sent home by Albert and Hermann Einstein in September 1900, when father and son took a trip to visit two company power plants near Venice.

The diameter of the moon is 2159 miles (2160)

The diameter of the sun is 864,575.9 miles (2160 x 400 = 864,000)

Numbers of seconds in one day is 86400 (2160 X 40)

The speed of light is 186282 miles per second (216 x 864 = 186624)

Space 360 x Time 60 = 2160

Bear in mind that we do not know the exact speed of light in a vacuum and the sun is a burning ball of gas, so you can allow for a slight discrepancy in measurements.

Effectively, the diameter of the moon multiplied by the diameter of the sun equals the speed of light in miles.

How daft and stubborn would you have to be to think that those figures are all simply a coincidence?
