We use math in architecture on a daily basis to solve problems. We use it to achieve both functional and aesthetic advantages. By applying math to our architectural designs through the use of the Golden Section and other mathematical principles, we can achieve harmony and balance. As you will see from some of the examples below, the application of mathematical principles can result in beautiful and long-lasting architecture which has passed the test of time.

Using Math in Architecture for Function and Form

We use math in architecture every day at our office. For example, we use math to calculate the area of a building site or office space. Math helps us to determine the volume of gravel or soil that is needed to fill a hole. We rely on math when designing safe building structures and bridges by calculating loads and spans. Math also helps us to determine the best material to use for a structure, such as wood, concrete, or steel.

Architects also use math when making aesthetic decisions. For instance, we use numbers to achieve attractive proportion and harmony. This may seem counter-intuitive, but architects routinely apply a combination of math, science, and art to create attractive and functional structures. One example of this is when we use math to achieve harmony and proportion by applying a well-known principle called the Golden Section

We tend to think of beauty as purely subjective, but that is not necessarily the case. There is a relationship between math and beauty. By applying math to our architectural designs through the use of the Golden Section and other mathematical principles, we can achieve harmony and balance.

The Golden Section is one example of a mathematical principle that is believed to result in pleasing proportions. It was mentioned in the works of the Greek mathematician Euclid, the father of geometry. Since the 4^th century, artists and architects have applied the Golden Section to their work.

The Golden Section is a rectangular form that, when cut in half or doubled, results in the same proportion as the original form. The proportions are 1: the square root of 2 (1.414) It is one of many mathematical principles that architects use to bring beautiful proportion to their designs.

Examples of the Golden Section are found extensively in nature, including the human body. The influential author Vitruvius asserted that the best designs are based on the perfect proportions of the human body.

Over the years many well-known artists and architects, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, used the Golden Section to define the dimensions and proportions in their works. For example, you can see the Golden Section demonstrated in DaVinci’s painting Mona Lisa and his drawing Vitruvian Man.

Famous Buildings Influenced by Mathematical Principles

Here are some examples of famous buildings universally recognized for their beauty. We believe their architects used math and the principals of the Golden Section in their design:

Parthenon

The classical Doric columned Parthenon was built on the Acropolis between 447 and 432 BC. It was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates. The temple had two rooms to shelter a gold and ivory statue of the goddess Athena and her treasure. Visitors to the Parthenon viewed the statue and temple from the outside. The refined exterior is recognized for its proportional harmony which has influenced generations of designers. The pediment and frieze were decorated with sculpted scenes of Athena, the Gods, and heroes.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Built on the Ile de la Cite, Notre Dame was built on the site of two earlier churches. The foundation stone was laid by Pope Alexander III in 1163. The stone building demonstrates various styles of architecture, due to the fact that construction occurred for over 300 years. It is predominantly French Gothic, but also has elements of Renaissance and Naturalism. The cathedral interior is 427 feet x 157 feet in plan. The two Gothic towers on the west façade are 223 feet high. They were intended to be crowned by spires, but the spires were never built. The cathedral is especially loved for its three stained glass rose windows and daring flying buttresses. During the Revolution, the building was extensively damaged and was saved from demolition by the emperor Napoleon.

Taj Mahal

Built in Agra between 1631 and 1648, the Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum designed by Ustad-Ahmad Lahori. This jewel of Indian architecture was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife. Additional buildings and elements were completed in 1653. The square tomb is raised and is dramatically located at the end of a formal garden. On the interior, the tomb chamber is octagonal and is surrounded by hallways and four corner rooms. Building materials are brick and lime veneered with marble and sandstone.

As you can see from the above examples, the application of mathematical principles can result in some pretty amazing architecture. The architects’ work reflects eye-catching harmony and balance. Although these buildings are all quite old, their designs have pleasing proportions which have truly passed the test of time.

Que el cáliz que se venera en la Catedral de Valencia como el Santo Grial es la copa que utilizó Jesucristo en la Última Cena puede creerse o no. Pero esta reliquia es venerada cada año por miles de fieles, los últimos Papas han querido celebrar Misa con ella en sus visitas a la ciudad, y las réplicas del Santo Cáliz que el arzobispo de Valencia está entregando a diversas personas y entidades están contribuyendo a la difusión de la piedad eucarística y a la creación de cofradías.

Con el objetivo de añadir rigor científico a los estudios, análisis y documentos y a la fuerza de la tradición que señalan la autenticidad de la reliquia, diversos arqueólogos, historiadores, teólogos y expertos en arte, física y otras disciplinas han celebrado, en Valencia del 7 al 9 de noviembre, el 1º Congreso Internacional sobre el Santo Cáliz, titulado ‘Valencia, la ciudad del Santo Grial’.

El simposio ha contado con la presidencia de honor del rey Don Juan Carlos, ha sido organizado por el Arzobispado de Valencia, el Cabildo Metropolitano de la Catedral, la Universidad Católica, el Centro Español de Sindonología, la Real Hermandad y la Cofradía del Santo Cáliz. Además, han colaborado en la organización la Orden de Caballería del Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalén y la Fundación COSO.

Los ponentes han coincidido en señalar que el Santo Cáliz de Valencia que permanece allí desde el siglo XV es único y científicamente no se le puede reprochar ningún argumento que niegue su autenticidad. Por eso, han instado a las autoridades a promover que la Unesco declare la reliquia Patrimonio de la Humanidad y han propuesto nuevas investigaciones de todas las piezas que componen el Santo Grial.

¿Dónde está el Santo Grial? La copa superior es la que utilizaría Jesucristo

Los expertos también han coincidido en destacar la vigencia del importante análisis realizado hace 50 años por el catedrático de Arqueología de la Universidad de Zaragoza Antonio Beltrán, que concluyó que la copa superior del actual Santo Cáliz de Valencia bien pudo estar en la mesa de la Santa Cena y ser la que Jesucristo utilizó para beber, para consagrar o para ambas cosas.

Se trata de una copa labrada, entre los siglos II y I a.C en un taller oriental de Egipto, de Siria o de la propia Palestina, con forma semiesférica, de piedra ágata cornalina oriental, que mide 9,5 cm de diámetro medio en la boca y 5,5 cm de profundidad por el interior, toda lisa sin ningún adorno, excepto una línea de corte redondeado paralela al borde.

A esta copa se añadió en la Edad Media el pie, formado por un vaso ovalado e invertido y la vara con su nudo, de oro, que sirve para unir las dos partes.

Todavía no se puede aplicar ninguna técnica científica tipo la del carbono-14 al Santo Cáliz, pero se cree que la copa ha sido utilizada por los primeros Papas, después por el abad del monasterio de San Juan de la Peña y por los arzobispos de Valencia, el día de la fiesta del Santo Cáliz. Además, ha sido muy valorada por miembros de la realeza (especialmente los reyes de la Corona de Aragón) y ahora por diversos historiadores y escritores de varios países.

Unos frescos medievales únicos en el mundo, nueva prueba de que el Santo Grial de Valencia es auténtico

Entre las nuevas pruebas de la autenticidad de la reliquia presentadas durante el Congreso se encuentran unos frescos medievales de la Virgen con el Santo Grial, “únicos por su iconografía”, encontrados en iglesias pirenaicas que “podrían tener relación con la estancia del Santo Cáliz en aquellas tierras”, según el profesor de Historia del Arte Vicent Zuriaga.

Se trata de frescos románicos, la mayoría del siglo XII, que se encuentran en iglesias y monasterios situados en las localidades ilerdenses de Sant Climent de Taüll, Ginestarre y Burgal y la de Sant Romà de Les Bons, en Andorra. Representan a la Virgen sosteniendo un “cáliz llameante, lo que nos lleva a pensar que es el auténtico Santo Grial”.

“Si no conseguimos encontrar este tipo iconográfico en ninguna otra zona del mundo, como de momento sucede, interpreto como hipótesis de trabajo que los artistas que representaron estas obras recogieron o bien la tradición que subyace en las leyendas medievales griálicas, o bien toman la referencia de un objeto concreto y próximo”, señaló Zuriaga.

Otro ponente, el experto en heráldica José Luis Sampedro, ha afirmado en el Congreso que la única reliquia del mundo “que puede ser el auténtico grial que utilizó Jesús en la Última Cena es el Santo Cáliz” que se venera en la Catedral de Valencia y ha afirmado que el resto de reliquias que “pretenden presentarse como la copa que empleó Jesús carecen de credibilidad, porque no tienen apoyo documental de ninguna fuente mínimamente rigurosa”.

Entre otras copas “u objetos similares que pretenden ser el Santo Grial auténtico y es evidente que no lo son”, citó el Cáliz de Antioquía, que se encuentra en el Metropitan Museum de Nueva York, el Sacro Cátino de Génova, el Santo Cáliz de Cebreiro (Pontevedra) y “una patena que se conserva en el Palacio Imperial de Viena”.

¿Cómo llegó el Santo Grial de Valencia hasta allí?

En el periplo del Santo Grial desde Tierra Santa hasta Valencia, se realizaron algunos documentos de cesión o intercambio que se han conservado hasta hoy y constituyen también pruebas de la autenticidad de la reliquia.

Después de la última Cena, la importancia que los primeros cristianos otorgaban a la liturgia permitió guardar con celo la reliquia, que fue llevada a Roma por el primer Papa, San Pedro. Allí la conservaron los Papas hasta San Sixto II, quien, para salvarla de la persecución del emperador Valeriano y de la amenaza de los bárbaros, la entregó a su diácono San Lorenzo, oriundo de España, que la envió a tierras de Huesca, en el siglo III.

Durante la invasión musulmana, la copa de la Cena fue ocultada en el Pirineo. Los cristianos de Huesca huyeron con ella a las montañas del norte en el año 712 Primero estuvo en las cuevas de Yebra y después encontró refugio en monasterios, el último de ellos, el de San Juan de la Peña.

En el año 1399, su prior entregó la reliquia al Rey de Aragón Martín el Humano, que la tuvo en el palacio real de la Alfajería de Zaragoza. En 1424, su sucesor Alfonso V el Magnánimo llevó el relicario real al palacio de Valencia y lo entregó, en 1437, a la Catedral, donde hoy se venera.
