The month of August is upon us once again, bringing with it humid days and sultry nights for North American observers.
You’ll often hear the first few weeks of August referred to as the Dog Days of Summer. Certainly, the oppressive midday heat may make you feel like lounging around in the shade like our canine companions. But did you know there is an astronomical tie-in for the Dog Days as well?
We’ve written extensively about the Dog Days of Summer previously, and how the 1460 year long Sothic Cycle of the ancient Egyptians became attributed to the Greek adoption of Sothis, and later in medieval times to the ‘Dog Star’ Sirius. Like the Blue Moon, say something wrong enough, long enough, and it successfully sticks and enters into meme-bank of popular culture.

A water monopoly empire, the Egyptians livelihood rested on knowing when the annual flooding of the Nile was about to occur. To this end, they relied on the first seasonal spotting of Sirius at dawn. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, and you can just pick out the flicker of Sirius in early August low to the southeast if you know exactly where to look for it.

Sirius lies at a declination of just under 17 degrees south of the celestial equator. It’s interesting to note that in modern times, the annual flooding of the Nile (prior to the completion of the Aswan Dam in 1970) is commemorated as occurring right around August 15th. Why the discrepancy? Part of it is due to the 26,000 year wobbling of the Earth’s axis known as the Precession of the Equinoxes; also, the Sothic calendar had no intercalculary or embolismic (think leap days) to keep a Sothic year in sync with the sidereal year. The Sothic cycle from one average first sighting of Sirius to another is 365.25 days, and just 9 minutes and 8 seconds short of a sidereal year.

But that does add up over time. German historian Eduard Meyer first described the Sothic Cycle in 1904, and tablets mention its use as a calendar back to 2781 BC. And just over 3 Sothic periods later (note that 1460= 365.25 x 4, which is the number of Julian years equal to 1461 Sothic years, as the two cycles ‘sync up’), and the flooding of the Nile now no longer quite coincides with the first sighting of Sirius.
Such a simultaneous sighting with the sunrise is known in astronomy as a heliacal rising. Remember that atmospheric extinction plays a role sighting Sirius in the swampy air mass of the atmosphere low to the horizon, taking its usual brilliant luster of magnitude -1.46 down to a more than a full magnitude and diminishing its intensity over 2.5 times.
This year, we transposed the seasonal predicted ‘first sightings’ of Sirius versus latitude onto a map of North America:

Another factor that has skewed the date of first ‘Sirius-sign’ is the apparent motion of the star itself. At 8.6 light years distant, Sirius appears to move 1.3 arc seconds per year. That’s not much, but over the span of one Sothic cycle, that amounts up to 31.6’, just larger than the average diameter of a Full Moon.
Sirius has been the star of legends and lore as well, not the least of which is the curious case of the Dogon people of Mali and their supposed privileged knowledge of its white dwarf companion star. Alvan Graham Clark and his father discovered Sirius B in 1862 as they tested out their shiny new 18.5-inch refractor. And speaking of Sirius B, keep a telescopic eye on the Dog Star, as the best chances to spy Sirius B peeking out from the glare of its primary are coming right up around 2020.

Repeating the visual feat of spying Sirius B low in the dawn can give you an appreciation as to the astronomical skill of ancient cultures. They not only realized the first sighting of Sirius in the dawn skies coincided with the annual Nile flooding, but they identified the discrepancy between the Sothic and sidereal year, to boot. Not bad, using nothing but naked eye observations. Such ability must have almost seemed magical to the ancients, as if the stars had laid out a celestial edge for the Egyptians to exploit.

You can also exploit one method of teasing out Sirius from the dawn sky a bit early that wasn’t available to those Egyptian astronomer priests: using a pair of binoculars to sweep the skies. Can you nab Sirius with a telescope and track it up into the daytime skies? Sirius is just bright enough to see in the daytime against a clear blue sky with good transparency if you know exactly where to look for it.

Revealing Adam: The Transfiguration
Although the events of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9) fit so well into Orthodox incarnational theology and salvation as theosis, the Feast of the Transfiguration became universally celebrated throughout the Orthodox world relatively late in history. It was celebrated in certain parts of Orthodoxy, but the fact that it ended up in the middle of the Dormition Fast is one sign that it became popular universally later than other feasts and fasts of the Church.
Be that as it may, the Feast of the Transfiguration does fit nicely into Orthodox theology, bringing together so many elements from the story of creation, the fall and salvation in Christ. The festal Apostikha hymns especially reveal how the feast reveals the theology of salvation. First we note in the hymns the claim that it is the pre-incarnate Christ who speaks to both Moses and Elijah. There is an assumption in Orthodoxy that all of the anthropomorphic encounters with God in the Old Testament are encounters with the pre-Incarnate Christ.

Humans are said in Genesis 1 to be created in God’s image and likeness. It is assumed in Orthodoxy that it is Christ, the real image of God the Father, in whose image we are made. Jesus Christ, God incarnate, reveals the original beauty of the image of God in us. At the transfiguration the three disciples’ eyes were open, and suddenly they saw the image of God in us, but now in all its glory. Adam and Eve were gloriously created in God’s image and likeness and glorious arrayed in garments provided them by God.
YOU WERE TRANSFIGURED, O CHRIST, AND MADE ADAM’S DARKENED IMAGE TO SHINE AGAIN AS LIGHTNING,
TRANSFORMING IT INTO THE GLORY AND SPLENDOR OF YOUR OWN DIVINITY. THEREFORE WE CRY ALOUD TO YOU:
LORD AND CREATOR OF ALL THINGS, GLORY TO YOU!
The image of God in Adam and Eve was glorious – like lightening, and that is what the three apostles saw. They saw how a human is in God’s glorious image, how humanity is supposed to reveal divinity. This doesn’t denigrate God, but is revealed in a lightening flash where humanity is as bright as the sun.
LORD, TODAY ON MOUNT TABOR, YOU HAVE REVEALED THE GLORY OF YOUR DIVINE IMAGE TO YOUR CHOSEN DISCIPLES, PETER, JAMES AND JOHN. FOR THEY LOOKED UPON YOUR GARMENTS THAT GLEAMED AS THE LIGHT, AND AT YOUR FACE THAT SHONE MORE THAN THE SUN!
Christ’s garments shown with this divine light – brighter than the sun. This revelation comes not in the darkness of the night but at mid-day, the sun is shining brightly. Yet the divine light in Christ shines even more brightly. Christ’s very garments are shining with this divine light, just as Adam and Eve’s did in the Garden of Delight. Christ is showing to the disciples not only what humanity was like in the beginning, in Paradise, but what creation itself was like.
UNABLE TO ENDURE THE VISION OF YOUR BRIGHTNESS WHICH NONE CAN BEAR, THEY FELL TO THE EARTH, POWERLESS TO LIFT UP THEIR GAZE, FOR THEY HEARD A VOICE THAT SPOKE FROM ABOVE: THIS IS MY BELOVED SON

The apostles saw what Adam and Eve had lost through sin and being expelled from Eden. The saw even the importance of the original garments worn by the first humans and restored by Christ. They saw what the physical creation was capable and what it was meant to be. They saw the material world once again in communion with divinity as it was intended by God to be. In Christ, at the Transfiguration, they saw the spiritual world and the physical world reunited, and the material world fulfilling all God created it to be.

El Experimento Filadelfia, también llamado Proyecto Arcoíris, es el nombre que recibió un supuesto experimento secreto llevado a cabo por la marina estadounidense en los astilleros navales de Filadelfia, en el estado de Pensilvania, durante o antes del 28 de octubre de 1943. En el cual el destructor escolta de la Armada USS Eldridge al parecer fue invisibilizado (o "encubierto") electrónicamente contra los dispositivos enemigos. La marina de Estados Unidos comenta que ha buscado archivos que se refieran a este hecho y no los ha encontrado, ni ha encontrado evidencia de que se intentara.[cita requerida]
El incidente fue reportado repetidamente como una farsa.[1] [2] [3]
A finales de los años 30, el ingeniero eléctrico Nikola Tesla, afirmó[cita requerida] haber completado una teoría dinámica de la gravedad, que básicamente explica la gravedad como una mezcla de ondas electromagnéticas longitudinales y transversales. Estos razonamientos calaron hondo en un grupo de trabajo que experimentaba con los campos electromagnéticos en la Universidad de Chicago[cita requerida], donde se estaban iniciando las investigaciones sobre la posibilidad de la invisibilidad a través del uso de campos eléctricos y magnéticos. Tres transmisores RF de 2 megavatios cada uno, 3.000 tubos amplificadores 6L6 (empleados para canalizar los campos de las bobinas de los dos generadores), circuitos de sincronización y modulación... fueron empleados para generar campos electromagnéticos masivos que, correctamente configurados, serían capaces de curvar las ondas de luz y de radios alrededor del buque, haciéndolo invisible.
Las pruebas habrían empezado el verano de 1943, y hasta cierto punto tuvieron éxito al principio. Una prueba, el 22 de julio de 1943, volvió al USS Eldridge (DE-173) casi totalmente invisible, con algunos testigos reportando una "niebla verdosa" —sin embargo, algunos miembros de la tripulación se quejaron de náuseas posteriormente. Carl Allen/Carlos Allende[editar]
En 1955, K. Jessup, un astrónomo amateur, antes investigador postuniversitario, publicó The Case for the UFO, un examen del fenómeno del OVNI (UFO en inglés) en el que teorizaba los medios de propulsión que un platillo volador del estilo de un OVNI podría utilizar. Jessup especuló que la anti-gravedad o el electromagnetismo pueden ser responsables del comportamiento de vuelo observado en los OVNIs, y lamentó, tanto en el libro como en la publicidad del tour que siguió, que la investigación de los vuelos espaciales se concentrara en el área de los cohetes, y que se pusiera poca atención a otros medios teóricos de vuelo, que él consideraba rendirían más frutos al final.

Allende también decía haber sido testigo de la desaparición y reaparición del Eldridge mientras trabajaba en un barco mercante que se encontraba cerca, el SS Andrew Furuseth.
