Ecuador quiere reinventar Mitad del Mundo con torre más alta del planeta

"La Torre del Sol" costaría 200 millones de dólares.
La torre más alta del mundo, de 1,6 km, podría erigirse en Ecuador sobre la línea imaginaria que divide al planeta en dos, una megaobra en ciernes para honrar el pasado indígena y fomentar el turismo que llevaría la impronta del arquitecto uruguayo Rafael Viñoly.
"La Torre del Sol", que costaría 200 millones de dólares, sería levantada en la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, un complejo a 13 km de Quito donde ya hay un obelisco de 30 metros y que recibe a 875.000 turistas al año.
Con el rascacielos la cifra de visitantes se podría triplicar, dijo a la AFP el impulsor del proyecto, Gustavo Baroja, prefecto (gobernador) de la provincia de Pichincha (cuya capital es Quito).
El monolito actual fue construido en 1979 en honor a unas misiones francesas que llegaron en 1736 y a fines del siglo XVIII para estudiar la forma y dimensiones de la Tierra.
Desde allí se extiende una franja pintada en el piso que simboliza la línea ecuatorial, donde los turistas se retratan con un pie en cada hemisferio detrás de un cartel que dice "latitud cero", si bien el paralelo no pasa exactamente por ahí.
Ese monumento "respondió a su época, pero en el nuevo milenio, con este despertar del hombre, de encontrar nuevas energías, la Mitad del Mundo tiene un mayor valor", señaló a la AFP Marcela Costales, viceprefecta y encargada de la iniciativa.
"Queremos que sea un ícono mundial que refleje lo que somos", afirmó Baroja, indicando que la estructura tendría 1,6 km e implicaría reformar el parque. La torre más alta del mundo en la actualidad es el Burj Khalifa, en Dubai, con 828 m.
Primeros en definir latitud
Costales dijo que el proyecto honrará a los Quitu-Cara, una cultura indígena que "según antiguos códices fue la primera en definir la latitud cero en lo que llamó el Valle Sagrado del Equinoccio".
Allí ocurren, entre otros, el fenómeno equinoccial dos veces al año, cuando los polos de la Tierra están a igual distancia del sol y la luz de éste cae perpendicular sobre la línea ecuatorial al mediodía, desapareciendo la sombra.
Baroja declaró que la torre se ubicaría en el lugar exacto por donde pasa ese meridiano, para corregir la desviación de unos 200 metros al noroeste.
La prefectura, a cargo del parque, propuso la obra a influyentes arquitectos como el brasileño Oscar Niemeyer, el español Santiago Calatrava y Viñoly, contó Baroja.
El uruguayo realizó un primer boceto en su estudio de Nueva York, que incluyó aspectos históricos, arqueológicos, paisajísticos y ambientales.
"Se emocionó mucho por la fuerza de nuestras raíces, pues el conocimiento ancestral fue muy superior a lo que imaginamos", refirió Costales.
Según el borrador, sobre el que Viñoly disertó en febrero de 2011 en la Mitad del Mundo, la torre tendrá forma helicoidal, un diámetro de 300 metros en la base, cuatro plataformas y un ascensor presurizado que subirá a 4.450 m sobre el nivel del mar.
Para Baroja, "llenar" esas plataformas plantea otro desafío, por lo que se conformó un comité técnico.
Esa comisión recopilará los aportes de facultades de arquitectura del país y de un taller internacional que tendrá lugar en enero. Luego los entregará a Viñoly para que realice el diseño y poder comenzar la obra en 2014.
El prefecto sostiene que las plataformas deberían reflejar la cultura local y reservar un espacio para la investigación, aunque también se plantea que alberguen un hotel de lujo, un centro de convenciones y hasta un templo ecuménico.
Al proyecto no le faltan críticas. Alberto Andino, presidente del Colegio de Arquitectos de Pichincha, que lo asesoró al principio, cree que primero debería definirse su contenido, y cuestiona que pueda caer en el desarrollismo de los megamonumentos de Dubai en vez de sustentarse en la naturaleza.
Costales dijo que hay contactos con inversionistas, incluida una misión de Qatar que expresó interés, y entidades de Estados Unidos y Europa.
"Queremos consolidar el plan arquitectónico y con esto ir al financiamiento para tener la torre más cercana al sol", sostuvo.

Spic is an ethnic slur used, amongst others, in the United States for a person of Hispanic background.

Some in the United States believe that the word is a play on their pronunciation of the English "speak."[1][2][3] The oldest known use of "spiggoty" is in 1910 by Wilbur Lawton in Boy Aviators in Nicaragua, or, In League with the Insurgents. Stuart Berg Flexner in I hear America Talking (1976), favored the explanation that it derives from "no spik Ingles" (or "no spika de Ingles").[4] These theories follow standard naming practices, which include attacking people according to the foods they eat (see Kraut and Frog) and for their failure to speak a language (see Barbarian and Gringo). Another possible origin for the word spic would be that it is an acronym for the words Spanish, Indian and colored. This being so due to the ancestry of many Hispanic people from the Caribbean being an amalgam of races consisting of Spaniards, the native indigenous Indians that resided on the islands and the Africans that were brought as slaves.
A slur derived from "spic" is "spic and span" (first used in the African-American community in the 1950s) meaning a mixed Puerto Rican and African-American couple.[5] The phrase had legitimate currency at the time as the name of a cleaning product, "Spic and Span", before it was applied to mixed-heritage couples. This product is still sold under the same name.[6]
