Geometry

Geometrically, the swastika can be regarded as an irregular icosagon or 20-sided polygon. The proportions of the Nazi swastika were fixed based on a 5 × 5 diagonal grid.[5]

Characteristic is the 90° rotational symmetry and chirality, hence the absence of reflectional symmetry, and the existence of two versions of swastikas that are each other's mirror image.

A right-facing swastika might be described as "clockwise" or "counter-clockwise".

The mirror-image forms are often described as:

  • clockwise and anti-clockwise;
  • left-facing and right-facing;
  • left-hand and right-hand.

"Left-facing" and "right-facing" are used mostly consistently referring to the upper arm of an upright swastika facing either to the viewer's left (卍) or right (卐). The other two descriptions are ambiguous as it is unclear whether they refer to the arms as leading or being dragged or whether their bending is viewed outward or inward. However, "clockwise" usually refers to the "right-facing" swastika. The terms are used inconsistently in modern times, which is confusing and may obfuscate an important point, that the rotation of the swastika may have symbolic relevance, although ancient vedic scripts describe the symbolic relevance of clock motion and counter clock motion.[citation needed] Less ambiguous terms might be "clockwise-pointing" and "counterclockwise-pointing."

Nazi ensigns had a through and through image, so both versions were present, one on each side, but the Nazi flag on land was right-facing on both sides and at a 45° rotation.[6]

The name "sauwastika" is sometimes given to the left-facing form of the swastika (卍).[7]

[edit] Origin hypotheses

Among the earliest cultures utilizing swastika is the neolithic Vinča culture of South-East Europe (see Vinča symbols).

More extensive use of the Swastika can be traced to Ancient India, during the Indus Valley Civilazation.

The swastika is a repeating design, created by the edges of the reeds in a square basket-weave. Other theories attempt to establish a connection via cultural diffusion or an explanation along the lines of Carl Jung's collective unconscious.

The genesis of the swastika symbol is often treated in conjunction with cross symbols in general, such as the sun cross of pagan Bronze Age religion. Beyond its certain presence in the "proto-writing" symbol systems emerging in the Neolithic,[8] nothing certain is known about the symbol's origin. There are nevertheless a number of speculative hypotheses. One hypothesis is that the cross symbols and the swastika share a common origin in simply symbolizing the sun. Another hypothesis is that the 4 arms of the cross represent 4 aspects of nature - the sun, wind, water, soil. Some have said the 4 arms of cross are four seasons, where the division for 90-degree sections correspond to the solstices and equinoxes. The Hindus represent it as the Universe in our own spiral galaxy in the fore finger of Lord Vishnu. This carries most significance in establishing the creation of the Universe and the arms as 'kal' or time, a calendar that is seen to be more advanced than the lunar calendar (symbolized by the lunar crescent common to Islam) where the seasons drift from calendar year to calendar year. The luni-solar solution for correcting season drift was to intercalate an extra month in certain years to restore the lunar cycle to the solar-season cycle. The Star of David is thought to originate as a symbol of that calendar system, where the two overlapping triangles are seen to form a partition of 12 sections around the perimeter with a 13th section in the middle, representing the 12 and sometimes 13 months to a year. As such, the Christian cross, Jewish hexagram star and the Muslim crescent moon are seen to have their origins in different views regarding which calendar system is preferred for marking holy days. Groups in higher latitudes experience the seasons more strongly, offering more advantage to the calendar represented by the swastika/cross.

Carl Sagan in his book Comet (1985) reproduces Han period Chinese manuscript (the Book of Silk, 2nd century BC) that shows comet tail varieties: most are variations on simple comet tails, but the last shows the comet nucleus with four bent arms extending from it, recalling a swastika. Sagan suggests that in antiquity a comet could have approached so close to Earth that the jets of gas streaming from it, bent by the comet's rotation, became visible, leading to the adoption of the swastika as a symbol across the world.[9] Bob Kobres in Comets and the Bronze Age Collapse (1992) contends that the swastika like comet on the Han Dynasty silk comet atlas was labeled a "long tailed pheasant star" (Di-Xing) because of its resemblance to a bird's foot or track. Kobres goes on to suggest an association of mythological birds and comets also outside China.

In Life's Other Secret (1999), Ian Stewart suggests the ubiquitous swastika pattern arises when parallel waves of neural activity sweep across the visual cortex during states of altered consciousness, producing a swirling swastika-like image, due to the way quadrants in the field of vision are mapped to opposite areas in the brain.[10]

Alexander Cunningham suggested that the Buddhist use of the shape arose from a combination of Brahmi characters abbreviating the words su astí.[3]

[edit] Archaeological record

Seals from the Indus Valley Civilization preserved at the British Museum.

The earliest swastika known has been found from Mezine, Ukraine. It is carved on late paleolithic figurine of mammoth ivory, being dated as early as about 10,000 BC. It has been suggested this swastika is a stylized picture of a stork in flight.[11]

In India, Bronze Age swastika symbols were found at Lothal and Harappa, on Indus Valley seals.[12] In England, neolithic or Bronze Age stone carvings of the symbol have been found on Ilkley Moor.

Swastikas have also been found on pottery in archaeological digs in Africa, in the area of Kush and on pottery at the Jebel Barkal temples,[13] in Iron Age designs of the northern Caucasus (Koban culture), and in Neolithic China in the Majiabang,[14] Dawenkou and Xiaoheyan cultures.[15] Other Iron Age attestations of the swastika can be associated with Indo-European cultures such as the Indo-Iranians, Celts, Greeks and Germanic peoples and Slavs.

The swastika is also seen in Egypt during the Coptic period. Textile number T.231-1923 held at the V&A Museum in London includes small swastikas in its design. This piece was found at Qau-el-Kebir, near Asyut, and is dated between AD300-600.

The Tierwirbel (the German for "animal whorl" or "whirl of animals"[16]) is a characteristic motive in Bronze Age Central Asia, the Eurasian Steppe, and later also in Iron Age Scythian and European (Baltic[17] and Germanic) culture, showing rotational symmetric arrangement of an animal motive, often four birds' heads. Even wider diffusion of this "Asiatic" theme has been proposed, to the Pacific and even North America (especially Moundville).[18

The swastika is an extremely powerful symbol. The Nazis used it to murder millions of people, but for centuries it had positive meanings. What is the history of the swastika? Does it now represent good or evil?

    The Oldest Known Symbol

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika was used by many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well known, if not commonly used, symbol but was called by many different names:

Though it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans also have long used the symbol of the swastika.

    The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II.

    A Change in Meaning

In the 1800s, countries around Germany were growing much larger, forming empires; yet Germany was not a unified country until 1871. To counter the feeling of vulnerability and the stigma of youth, German nationalists in the mid-nineteenth century began to use the swastika, because it had ancient Aryan/Indian origins, to represent a long Germanic/Aryan history.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the swastika could be found on nationalist German volkisch periodicals and was the official emblem of the German Gymnasts' League.

In the beginning of the twentieth century, the swastika was a common symbol of German nationalism and could be found in a multitude of places such as the emblem for the Wandervogel, a German youth movement; on Joerg Lanz von Liebenfels' antisemitic periodical Ostara; on various Freikorps units; and as an emblem of the Thule Society.

    Hitler and the Nazis

In 1920, Adolf Hitler decided that the Nazi Party needed its own insignia and flag. For Hitler, the new flag had to be "a symbol of our own struggle" as well as "highly effective as a poster." (Mein Kampf, pg. 495)

On August 7, 1920, at the Salzburg Congress, the red flag with a white circle and black swastika became the official emblem of the Nazi Party.

In Mein Kampf, Hitler described the Nazis' new flag: "In red we see the social idea of the movement, in white the nationalistic idea, in the swastika the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work, which as such always has been and always will be anti-Semitic." (pg. 496-497)

Because of the Nazis' flag, the swastika soon became a symbol of hate, antisemitism, violence, death, and murder.

What Does the Swastika Mean Now?

There is a great debate as to what the swastika means now. For 3,000 years, the swastika meant life and good luck. But because of the Nazis, it has also taken on a meaning of death and hate.

These conflicting meanings are causing problems in today's society. For Buddhists and Hindus, the swastika is a very religious symbol that is commonly used. Chirag Badlani shares a story about one time when he went to make some photocopies of some Hindu Gods for his temple. While standing in line to pay for the photocopies, some people behind him in line noticed that one of the pictures had a swastika. They called him a Nazi.

Unfortunately, the Nazis were so effective at their use of the swastika emblem, that many do not even know any other meaning for the swastika. Can there be two completely opposite meanings for one symbol?

Does the Direction of the Swastika Matter?

In ancient times, the direction of the swastika was interchangeable as can be seen on an ancient Chinese silk drawing.

Some cultures in the past had differentiated between the clockwise swastika and the counter-clockwise sauvastika. In these cultures the swastika symbolized health and life while the sauvastika took on a mystical meaning of bad-luck or misfortune.

But since the Nazis use of the swastika, some people are trying to differentiate the two meanings of the swastika by varying its direction - trying to make the clockwise, Nazi version of the swastika mean hate and death while the counter-clockwise version would hold the ancient meaning of the symbol, life and good-luck.

Swastika and Extraterrestrials at Coronado Navy Base

The Coronado Swastika has been known for a while but I thought I’d post it here. It’s hard for me to believe that this was an accident.

    Coronado

Here are the coordinates: 32°40’33.58″N 117°09’27.77″W

How asleep could you expect an architect to be to build a compound in the shape of a swastika on a US military base?

    800px Flag of Nazi Germany 1933 1945

(Flag of Nazi Germany from 1933-1945)

If the architect was a Nazi or just into sacred Buddhist symbolism then how could the higher ups in the military not notice this obvious plan either?

The Wikipedia article on the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado says this was an ‘oversight’ back in 1967 when it was designed and again when it was built in 1970.

The Navy has fully utilized this building complex for more than 35 years, and intends to continue the use of the buildings, as long as they remain adequate for the needs of the service. However, in early 2007 the San Diego chapter of the Anti-Defamation League and U.S. Representative Susan Davis  began quiet talks with the Navy, and on September 26, 2007 the Navy announced that they would budget up to $600,000, starting in the fiscal year that begins October 1, to modify the buildings’ walkways, “camouflage” landscaping and rooftop photovoltaic cells to hide the swastika look from the air.

Nothing seems to have changed as of the date 8/24/2010 on the Google Earth satellite imagery. I’m not sure how PV panels on the roof and landscaping could ever hide this obvious symbol.

    Extraterrestrials in Coronado?

I have another story about the Coronado base that comes down through my family. My great uncle eventually became an Admiral in the US Navy and I did meet him once before he died when I was about 17 years old. In fact he was quite a war hero in WWII.

    Jake

His daughter tells me this story with her permission to publish:

In Paris he was part of some very hush hush stuff at SHAPE. Wonder about that. [See Bob Dean interview on Project Camelot] And of course I told you on his death bed he said it was time to continue building the space ships…in Coronado I saw an ET one night and my Dad was downstairs with Military men…I remember he didn’t dismiss me just looked wide-eyed when I described the ET. I told him it talked to me but didn’t seem to have a mouth…I was 3 or so…he asked if it was scary and I said No…it was friendly but strange looking…I believe my Dad was the third youngest Admiral in history…have you seen the film by Mitchner – Bridges Of Tokorei? It was about him…Brilliant Guy…like you…Dad was the lead…played by William Holden…Mitchner interviewed him for the book…can rent it and play instantly on amazon…2.99! One of Dads’ favorite stories was about how he hated Roosevelt…said there Dad was out to sea in the thick of it and Roosevelt said they weren’t at war…you know Dad actually talked very little about things in the military…I had no idea what a war hero he was until I found a box of newspaper articles written about him…box was in the garage…all of his medals rather embarrassed him…and isn’t it interesting you were both interested in architecture! He saw symbols in everything…like a puzzle to be solved…

The Ancient Aliens show on the History Channel is very well done. It’s honestly the first time that I haven’t been disappointed with the depth of coverage on a TV show talking about ETs. They have an episode on Aliens and the Third Reich which ties in with the confluence of symbolism in this post.

"The swastika has become a symbol tabu in Western societies, but its antiquity and the fact that it is present in almost every ancient culture- globally - require an explanation....Could this mysterious and ancient symbol be a heritage of a long lost advanced civilization, a symbol that would resonate with the balanced forces of the macro- and the micro-cosmos."

    Hi Raphael,
Obviously there are points where we disagree, perhaps we should join on agreement, i do not dispute that there may be Mayan symbolism with the Vatican Keyhole, however the keys and keyholes are symbolism in the West, the masons use a Key in symbols, as the Key to the mysteries, they built the forerunner of Washington DC in Bath, UK.

Please scroll down link to overhead photo to the Circus in Bath, UK, it was built by masons, can you see the KEY.

    http://archiplanet.org/wiki/Circus_at_Bath

In symbolism i would like to put the masons key in the Vatican Keyhole....i wonder what secrets we would learn?

    Image
    triskele in Karja Church

    ImageImage

The KEY at your link looks like a circle with '3' lines or rays emanating from it, each line separated by 120 degrees.

In other words monk, I see a tetrahedron, which harbors the KEY to Universal Movement = SWASTIKA

    Image

Now Bucky Fuller thought the TETRAHEDRON (triangle) not the CUBE (square) was the primary building block of the universe.
(I can show you why this is true)
BTW both have been represented by the SWASTIKA, as either 3-fold rotation, or 4-fold rotation.
There is of course the 5-fold rotation swastika associated with the 2D PENTAGON

The MASON symbolism is all about geometry of the heavens and the earth being mirror images, that go through cosmic, reflections, rotations and translations of the original.
The FALL OF MAN does not need to be a straight line on the way DOWN, or the on the way back UP.
Freemason symbolism borrows from many beliefs, because it does concern itself with the geometry of the universe.

The difference between YOU and ME monk is that I look for, with an INTENT and a PASSION, the common denominators between ALL beliefs...
YOU seem focused more on the WEST, the MASONS and the star sirius mostly.
    Is that your forte?

HOW MANY BOOKS ON THE FREEMASONS DO YOU OWN or can claim having read?
    which ones?

Thus in conclusion, taking what you know, and meshing it with a higher knowledge, I have a question for you.
....are you suggesting the tetrahedron represents the KEY that fits the CUBIC**KEYHOLE?
    i.e. triangle 3 + square 4 = magical 7?

**Because YES it can be shown how the universal KEYHOLE temple or template form is associated with the CUBE and DNA.

Link showing how the KEYHOLE = Holy Grail = CUBE = I Ching = DNA

Is this why Freemasonry which sees itself as righteous and square is associated with the cube?
Please do try to remember that the ancient mind walked the ARK-etypal talk much better than we do today.

And the 9-point** Enneagram connects us BACK, brings us forward, to Marko Rodin and his Vortex Based Math which leads us back to the 12,000 year old swastika.
    Want the links?

(BTW the 7, 9, and 11-pointed stars were ALL associated with the Holy Spirit in the middle ages)

SWASTIKA CLARAMENTE ES UNA REFERENCIA A LA LUNA EN EL MARCO A SUS CUATRO FASES (RELACION DEL CUATRO CON EL FONDO BLANCO CON LA FORMA DE LA MISMA)

    Quote:
In Mein Kampf, Hitler described the Nazis' new flag: "In red we see the social idea of the movement, in white the nationalistic idea, in the swastika/black the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work, which as such always has been and always will be anti-Semitic." In Latin TEXT = woven cloth = woven using strings = 3 strings of fate connected to the 3 weavers of fate = 3 Norns of Norse myth connected to these specific colors:
    BLACK WHITE RED

WHEN WE BECOME MEME aware is when a beneficent paradigm shift will occur.

Because NOT until we becOME MEME aware can WE and ME stop forming self-serving Levant Temes/teams vs. the Science Temes too.
WE and ME need to get together and form ONE DreamTEAM.
    NOW
    ONE

WE and ME must become AWARE of how some MEMEs have helped form the TEMEs/teams that keep dividing humanity.

Here is another profound connection between MEMEs, COLORs, how we SEE, how colors were actually interpreted by the ancients...
Again my theory seems to be FULL ON and ON TRACK.

    Image

these next two pages of text are taken from this book
    The MEME Machine
The second page, second last paragraph that begins with "This view" is where it got really interesting for ME and ME in regards to how the ancients all seemed to record colors....

    WOW WOW WOW

    BLACK WHITE RED

OUR EYESIGHT PREFERS THE HIERARCHY OF THE COLOR ON THE NAZI SWASTIKAs?
OUR EYESIGHT HONES IN ON THE INHERENT GEOMETRY OF THE NAZI SWASTIKAS TOO?

YES apparently WE and ME do.
    It is all explained here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_Colo ... _Evolution

Is the SWASTIKA the ULTIMATE MEME?

It does fulfill the 3 criteria
    that Dawkins suggested, beautifully.

    Image

    1/ Longevity
    2/ Fecundity
    3/ Fidelity

    Does the SWASTIKA fulfill longevity?
It has been around for 12,000+ years, derived from a key fret from 23,000 BCE
    YES

    Does the SWASTIKA fulfill fecundity?
Meaning....has it gotten around town, how easy is it spread...does everybody know about it?
    YES

    Does the SWASTIKA fulfill fidelity?
    YES
Shall we discuss the hi and low fidelity of symbols?

Now read this post connecting the SWASTIKA to ATLANTIS
    http://kachina2012.wordpress.com/2010/0 ... -atlantis/

the SWASTIKA along with the Maltese Cross, represent a profound TRUTH that has been put out in the open, in plain view.

    believe it :!:
