The Skull of Mary Magdalene and Its Mysterious Scent of Roses

It is said that if you want to see the relics of Mary Magdalene, you must travel to the church of Vézelay in Provence, France. These objects have been extremely controversial, as they are surrounded by legends and contradictory stories.

Some say that Mary Magdalene ended her days in Ephesus with Saint John and the Holy Virgin, while others say her relics were removed from there to Constantinople.

Another legend associates France with Mary Magdalene. That is if she escaped, along with Lazarus and his sisters, from persecution, reaching the coasts of Gaul. Mary Magdalene evangelized parts of France and spent her last days living in a cave in Provence. Her relics were first venerated in Vézelay.

Later, St Maximin-la Sainte Baume claimed that her relics were there and what is supposed to be her skull could be seen in the Basilica of St Maximin.

The skull of Mary Magdalene rests most of the year in the crypt of the Sainte Marie Madeleine Basilica, a Gothic basilica whose construction began in 1295 under Charles II of Anjou, King of Naples, Count of Provence and nephew of Saint Louis (King of France).

Mary Magdalene’s body was buried on this land, and then hidden for centuries only to be rediscovered on December 10, 1279 during excavations ordered by Charles II himself.

Mary Magdalene’s remains were found intact, except for her jawbone. Beneath the dust inside the tomb was a wax-wrapped wooden tablet. Mary Magdalene’s jawbone was sent to Rome after a previous excavation of her tomb and before the invasion of 710 AD, when all the important relics in France were hidden.

El cráneo de maría magdalena y su misterioso olor a rosas

In Rome, Mary Magdalene’s jawbone had been venerated for centuries. With the news of the 1279 discovery, Pope Boniface VIII returned the jawbone to St. Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume and on April 6, 1295, it was reunited with Mary Magdalene’s skull.

It is said that, when Mary Magdalene’s tomb was first opened in 1279, there was a wonderful smell of roses that filled the air, and there was a small piece of skin attached to her skull, where Jesus touched her after his resurrection. The bishops who witnessed the excavation called it “noli me tangere”, because they believed that, through the miracle of Jesus‘ touch, the skin was still alive. The caretakers of the relics carefully sealed the “noli me tangere” in a glass vase.

In the seventeenth century, Protestants destroyed the Benedictine abbey of Vézelay, converted the church into a stable, and destroyed the relics. In 1793, during the French Revolution, the sanctuary was attacked and the relics thrown away. The St. Maximin Basilica was saved from total destruction by turning it into a government store.

Joseph Bastide, sacristan of St. Maximin, removed the skull of Mary Magdalene and the “noli me tangere”. After the Revolution, Bastide brought his treasure to the archbishop. The relics of Mary Magdalene, which are there now, were delivered to the church after its restoration.

Less than a century later, at the time when the gold reliquary was created to house the skull with its golden hair, carried by four golden angels (presumably 1860 because the Roman numerals “MDCCCLX” are on the back), the artist designed a special place under the skull to put the glass jar containing the precious “noli me tangere”.

Currently, believers and tourists can find the skull of Mary Magdalene in the crypt behind an iron grille beneath the ground floor of the basilica, down a narrow stone staircase just behind her alabaster sarcophagus. It is difficult to see the skull through the iron grille, even when close.

From July 22nd, for a whole week, the skull is taken out of this place with all the care, when the festival of Mary Magdalene begins. Mary Magdalene’s skull in its gold reliquary weighs approximately 400 kilograms and is carried by eight men from the basilica through the streets of St. Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume in a candlelit procession with songs and prayers. When they take Mary Magdalene’s skull outdoors, they cover it with a golden cloak to protect it.

After 2,000 years, the supposed skull of Mary Magdalene is preserved in a small town in the south of France, for everyone to see. Many witnesses claim that the characteristic scent of roses still lingers. However, it is impossible to confirm the origin of the bones of these relics, but the skull continues to be a precious treasure for Catholic believers.

Metric Time

Aside from you chronically late people, we all know how time works:

20150416093225_00001

This system is okay. But also, it’s kind of crazy.

Why 60 minutes per hour? Why 60 seconds per minute? It goes back to Babylon, with their base 60 number system—the same heritage that gives us 360 degrees in a circle. Now, that’s all well and good for Babylon 5 fans, but our society isn’t base-60. It’s base-10. Shouldn’t our system of measuring time reflect that?

So ring the bells, beat the drums, and summon the presidential candidates to “weigh in,” because I hereby give you… metric time.

20150416093225_00002

Now, this represents a bit of a change. The new seconds are a bit shorter. The new minutes are a bit longer. And the new hours are quite different—nearly two and a half times as long.

20150416093225_00003

So why do this? Because it’d be so much easier to talk about time!

Here’s one improvement: analog clocks are easier to read. At first glance, the improvement may not be so obvious—we’ve simply reshuffled the numbers a bit.

20150416093225_00004

But notice, the minute hand makes more sense now. When it’s at the 2, we’re 20 minutes past the hour. When it’s at the 7, we’re 70 minutes after the hour. And so on.

20150416093225_00005

Second, times are no longer duplicated. For example, instead of needing to distinguish between 6am and 6pm, we can simply say “2:50” and “7:50.” (This is, of course, how “military time” currently works.)

Third—this is a big one—the time tells you how far through the day you are. The time 2:00 is exactly 20% of the way through the day. At 8:76, we’re exactly 87.6% of the way through the day.

20150416093225_00006

Fourth, consider the moment when we’re 99.9% of the way through the day. In the new metric system, we get to watch the clock roll from 9:99 back around to 0:00. Isn’t that nicer and more conclusive than 11:59pm rolling around to 12:00am?

Fifth, it’s so much easier to talk about longer times. Two and a half days? That’s 25 hours. Three days and 6 hours? That’s simply 3.6 days. Since an hour is now a nice decimal fraction of a day, these conversions become easy.

Will there be adjustments to make? Certainly! But the adjustments are half of the fun.

Let’s start, as all good things do, with television. Whether you enjoy half-hour sitcoms or hour-long dramas, the length of your favorite shows is probably going to change. Why? Because, under our new system, what we now call “half an hour” will be 20.83 minutes. What we now call “an hour” will be 41.67.

20150416093225_00007

There’s nothing magical about these “half-hour” and “hour” lengths, obviously. They were chosen simply because they were nice round numbers. But under the new system, they aren’t! Since it’d be silly to divide the TV schedule into 21-minute intervals, presumably television networks would tweak the lengths to go more evenly into an hour.

If so, they’d have two choices: 5 blocks per hour (i.e., two dramas, plus a sitcom), or 4 blocks per hour (i.e., two dramas).

If you choose the former, shows will be 4% shorter than today, leading to accelerated storytelling. (It’s the same change that’s unfolded over the last 20 years, as increased ad time has squeezed the shows themselves to be shorter.)

20150416093225_00008

And if you choose the latter, shows will be 20% longer. They’ll perhaps unfold at a slower, more cinematic speed. Either way, expect the pacing and rhythm of TV shows to change.

Sports run into the same issue. Football will probably opt for four quarters of 10 minutes each, which shortens the game by 4%. Expect slightly diminished scoring as a result. (And, if we’re lucky, diminished concussions.)

20150416093225_00009

Hockey, meanwhile, might go for three periods of 15 minutes each, which actually makes the game 8% longer. It might give someone a chance to tackle Wayne Gretzky’s scoring records (but then again, probably not—he’s way out of reach right now).

20150416093225_00010

I’d expect soccer to select two halves of 30 minutes each, which (as with American football) shortens games by 4%. If you thought soccer was too high-scoring already, you’re in luck (and also in a very small minority, I suspect).

20150416093225_00011

When it comes to sports, the lengths of games won’t be the only thing changing. We also need to reconsider record running times.

Usain Bolt’s world-record for the 100-meter dash (currently 9.58 seconds) would be, under the new system, 11.09 metric seconds. Doing the 100m in 11 metric seconds might be achievable in the future, but 10 seconds? Perhaps never. (That’s the equivalent of 8.64 of our seconds!)

What about the mile? Well, it’s a little funny to imagine a world with metric time still worrying about that strange unit of distance (5280 feet? Really?), but the famed 4-minute mile would correspond to a 2.78-minute mile.

This is weird because, for top runners in the 1940s and 1950s, the barrier to running a 4-minute mile may have been less physiological than psychological. Would the 2.8-minute mile have felt as intimidating? Would the 3-minute mile? Perhaps it’d be the 2.5-minute mile, seeing as the current world record (3:43 in our old system) is 2.58 metric minutes?

20150416093225_00012

And we might as well mention the marathon, where the world record time (currently 2:02:57) is now under an hour: 85 minutes, 38 seconds. I suspect that the 1-hour marathon would be a real badge of honor, something that every distance runner aspires to.

Leaving sports aside, what about food?

Restaurants would open for breakfast at perhaps 3:00 or 3:50. (Of course, coffee shops like Starbucks might open as early as 2:50.)

You’d get lunch around 5:00—that is to say, noon. Under our current system, I feel silly eating before 11:30, which is 4:80 under the new system. But I wonder—would I feel comfortable grabbing lunch at 4:75? Perhaps even 4:60 (even though that’s earlier than 11am under our current scheme)?

20150416093225_00013

Eating is psychological, and how we number our hours might steer our behavior.

As for dinner, I suspect 7:50 to 8:00 would be the preferred time (although the famously late-eating Spaniards might hold off until 8:75 or 9:00).

Other numbers change, too. Take speed limits: the typical 65mph limit on many highways translates to 156 mph under the new system; I suspect we’d see that bumped up to 160 mph or down to 150 mph for the sake of roundness (which translates to 66.7mph or 62.5mph under our current system).

20150416093225_00014

The speed of sound? Not 340 meters per second any longer; it’s now just 294 meters per second. Meters haven’t changed, of course, but seconds have gotten shorter!

And the speed of light? Unfortunately, we lose the lovely number 300 million meters per second; instead, it becomes roughly 260 million meters per second.

Speaking of light, on the equinox, you get 5 hours of light and 5 hours of dark.

The winter solstice is pretty grim: in London, you’d see just 3 hours, 25 minutes, and 25 seconds of daylight.

The summer solstice is nice, though: London would get 6 hours, 93 minutes of sun.

20150416093225_00015

Okay, time to come clean: I propose this without a single iota of seriousness. It’d be insane to ditch our current system. We’re used to it. We’ve agreed upon it. We’ve built our lives around it. The hassle of a change far outweighs the gains.

But I still love the thought experiment. It asks you, in some small way, to reimagine your life. How do you spend your time? How do you measure the success of a day? When you plan your hours, are you conceding to the arbitrary dictates of a quirky clock, or are you truly giving your tasks the time that they deserve? If I scrambled your sense of time, relabeling all your moments, would it change the way you feel about them? Do the numbers we assign to times matter? Or are we just scratching lines on the shifting dunes of eternity?

Vézelay, Saint Maximin and the relics of Mary Magdalene

Vézelay, Saint Maximin and the relics of Mary Magdalene

Vezelay and Saint Maximin, an incredible “war” for the relics of Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene did not immediately have a great aura in the history of the Church. It was not until the 7th and 8th centuries that she began to be favored in monastic circles, where the accent was placed on repentance and forgiveness by welcoming sinners there. The life of the saint – a sinner who became an ascetic – then merges with the traditions concerning the life of Mary the Egyptian. She was a prostitute of the six century who would have done penance in the desert, on the other side of the Mediterranean.
In the 11th century, the monasteries, under the influence of the order of Cluny, took on social and economic importance. There is also a tremendous cult around all kinds of relics brought back from the Holy Land or purchased in Constantinople. Having relics of great saints is important at this time. It is because there are relics that pilgrimages are organized and pilgrimages pay off. In Vézelay at the beginning of the 11th century the monastery was in full decline. Wishing to promote his abbey, Abbot Geoffroy (1037-1052), friend of the pope, ambitious and close to princes “discovered” (“invented” is the term of use) and exhibited the relics of Mary Magdalene. Pilgrims flock.

Relic of Mary Magdalene, Vezelay basilica

In 1050 Mary Magdalene officially became the patron saint of Vezelay abbey.

Over the 11th and 12th centuries, the abbey, many times enlarged and rebuilt, was transformed into a magnificent sanctuary, with splendid Romanesque portals. It was an important stopover on the way to Compostela. The city took advantage of the influx of pilgrims. In the 12th century, its population amounted to 10,000 inhabitants, a considerable number for the time. Vézelay then became a center of great importance for the West.
Under the protection of the powerful dukes of Burgundy, in 1146, Saint Benedict preached the second crusade there. King Louis VII, Queen Eleanor and a crowd of nobles, prelates and people gathered on the hill.
In 1190, Richard Coeur-de-Lion and Philippe-Auguste met there at the start of the third crusade.
In 1217, François d’Assise chose the hill of Vézelay to found the first Franciscan establishment on French soil.

How the relics of Mary Magdalene arrived in Vézelay ?

Natural curiosity, but unsatisfactory answers.
We accepted the idea that it was Gérard de Roussillon who would have organized the transfer of the relics during the foundation of the abbey, relics that we would have gone to look for in Saint-Maximin where we knew that the saint had her burial. .
The bishop of Autun launched a prohibition against the pilgrimage. We then asked for the arbitration of the Pope. Pascal II, who by a bull given in 1103, broke the prohibition of the bishop and invited all the French to make the pilgrimage of Vézelay. The pilgrimage then took off, these were the great hours of Vézelay.
However, doubt persisted, not about the burial of Mary Magdalene in Provence, but about the transfer of her relics to Vézelay and their authenticity. We didn’t have much to show as relics in Vézelay, where we talked about them a lot without ever really presenting them in public.

“Presentable” and “indisputable” relics were needed. It was then that in 1265, relics were exhumed in Vézelay, kept in a box which would have been deposited in the crypt in 920 more than three centuries earlier. A certificate of authenticity in the box proves this!. “…under the high altar, a metal chest, long square, which contained some relics wrapped in two veils of silk, with a certain quantity woman’s hair”. There was also a letter from a King Charles certifying that “in this coffer is contained the body of the blessed Mary Magdalene”. (Act drawn up by Gui de Mello, bishop of Auxerre and Pierre, bishop of Panéade.)
Saint Louis officially recognized the relics and went to Vézelay for their elevation in 1267.

Vezelay basilicaSt Maximin basilica

Nevertheless, the doubt still persisted.
Twelve years later, in 1279, Charles II, Prince of Salerno, nephew of Saint Louis, who had come to Saint-Maximin on pilgrimage and had carried out a solid investigation, was convinced that the tomb of Mary Magdalene was in the crypt. where Saint Maximin had once buried her.
He organized excavations which led to the discovery of several sarcophagi. In the so-called “Sidoine’s sarcophagus” was discovered the body of Mary Magdalene with an inscription on a wooden tablet on which appeared simply: “Here lies the body of Saint Mary Magdalene.”

And finally, for the Abbey of Vézelay, the miracle will not take place.

Indeed, Pope Boniface VIII definitively put an end to this “battle” between the 2 cities when he recognized the authenticity of the relics discovered by Charles II at Saint Maximin.
Vézelay will have to submit to the spiritual authority of the Pope. At the end of the 13th century, it is the beginning of the decline of the pilgrimage of Vézelay. The reliquary in the crypt of Vezelay contains a piece of her rib bone, given by the Dominican monks of St Maximin.
