Seven hills of Istanbul

Istanbul is known as the City on the Seven Hills (Turkish: Yedi tepeli şehir). The city has inherited this denomination from Byzantine Constantinople which - consciously following the model of Rome - was built on seven hills too.

The seven hills, all located in the area within the walls, first appeared when the valleys of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus were opened up during the Secondary and Tertiary periods. In the Ottoman Age, as in the earlier Byzantine period, each hill was surmounted by monumental religious buildings (churches under the Byzantines, imperial mosques under the Ottomans).
The first hill on which the ancient city of Byzantium was founded, begins from Seraglio Point and extends over the whole area containing Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and Topkapı Palace.
On the second hill are to be found the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Column of Constantine. The second hill is divided from the first by a fairly deep valley running from Babiali on the east Eminönü.
The third hill is now occupied by the main buildings of Istanbul University, the Bayezid II Mosque to the south and the Süleymaniye Mosque to the north. The southern slopes of the hill descend to Kumkapi and Langa.
The fourth hill on which stood the Church of the Holy Apostles and, subsequently, the Fatih Mosque, slopes down rather steeply to the Golden Horn on the north and, rather more gently, to Aksaray on the south.
On the fifth hill we find the Mosque of Sultan Selim. The fifth and the sixth hills are separated by the valley running down on the west to Balat on the shore of the Golden Horn.
On the sixth hill are to be found the districts of Edirnekapı and Ayvansaray. Its gentle slopes run out beyond the line of the defense walls.

Cibeles
De Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre
Originalmente una diosa frigia, Cibeles (en griego antiguo Κυβέλη Kybélê, nombre al que a veces se da la etimología de «la del pelo» si se considera griego en lugar de frigio) era la diosa de la Madre Tierra que fue adorada en Anatolia desde el neolítico. Como la Gea o su equivalente minoica Rea, Cibeles era la personificación de la fértil tierra, una diosa de las cavernas y las montañas, murallas y fortalezas, de la Naturaleza y los animales (especialmente leones y abejas). Su equivalente romana era Magna Mater, la Gran Madre o Idæa mater («Madre del Ida»). Su título «Señora de los Animales», que también ostentaba la Diosa Madre minoica, revela sus arcaicas raíces paleolíticas. Es una deidad de vida, muerte y resurrección. Su consorte, cuyo culto fue introducido más tarde, era Atis. Se trata de una de las principales diosas de las antiguas culturas del Oriente Próximo. En la mitología griega también es conocida como Δαμία (Damia).
Se la representa con vestimentas frigias y una corona con forma de muralla. Porta las llaves que dan acceso a todas las riquezas de la tierra. Monta un carro que simboliza la superioridad de la madre Naturaleza, a la que incluso se subordinan los poderosos leones que tiran del mismo. En otras representaciones se sienta en un trono custodiado por las mismas bestias. La leyenda, relatada por Ovidio en Las Metamorfosis (X, vss. 570- 704), las relaciona con una singular pareja mitológica, Hipómenes (Melanión, en otras versiones) y Atalanta, que compitieron en una carrera de velocidad. La astucia de Hipómenes -inspirado por la diosa del amor, ya que el premio era la mano de Atalanta- hizo caer al suelo unas manzanas de oro que atrajeron la atención de Atalanta y la distrajeron de la carrera, que perdió. El mito concluye con la unión impía de los amantes dentro de un recinto sagrado dedicado a la diosa Cibeles, la cual se enfurece y como castigo los metamorfosea en leones, condenados a tirar de su carro eternamente.
En los panteones griego y romano, Cibeles es identificada con Rea, esposa de Crono (Saturno) y madre de los principales dioses: Hestia (Vesta), Demeter (Ceres), Hera (Juno), Hades (Plutón), Poseidón (Neptuno) y Zeus (Júpiter). De acuerdo con la mitología griega, Cibeles inicia a Dionisio en su culto misterioso.
Esta Diosa Madre fue honrada en todo el mundo antiguo. El centro de su culto estaba en la Monte Dindymon en Pesinunte («Pessinus»), donde cayó el Betilo cúbico y negro denominado Kubele que da origen de su nombre.[1]
En 204 a.C., durante la Segunda Guerra Púnica, los romanos, obedeciendo a una profecía de los libros sibilinos, y del Oráculo de Delfos, enviaron embajadores a Pessinus con la difícil misión de llevar a Roma la piedra sagrada. La llevaron escoltada por cinco quinquerremes que fueron recibidos por Claudia Quinta.[2] Inicialmente se colocó en el templo de La Victoria en el suroeste del Monte Palatino dentro del Pomoerium, a la espera de la finalización de su propio templo, que le fue consagrado el 9 de abril de 191 a.C.[3]
El culto fue objeto de un fiel seguimiento hasta el final del período republicano. Los ciudadanos romanos no tenían derecho a participar en el sacerdocio y sus rituales, pero sí participaban en el festival de la diosa, el Megalesia). La diosa estaba representada por una escultura en el templo y sus servicios los proporcionaban sacerdotes castrados orientas y/o eslavos, a los que denominaban galli. La autocastración a la que se sometían estos sacerdotes extranjeros en el día de la sangre homenajeaba a Atis, amado de Cibeles, que tras engañarla con la ninfa Sagaritis, fue enloquecido por la diosa celosa, se castró y se suicidó. En las celebraciones, los sacerdotes sacaban a la diosa en procesión. Se sacrificaban toros (taurobolio) y bebían su sangre. Las restricciones fueron levantadas por el emperador Claudio.
Se asocia a Cibeles principalmente con la fertilidad. También encarna la naturaleza salvaje, simbolizada por los leones que la acompañan. Se le atribuyó la curación de enfermedades y la protección de su pueblo durante la guerra.

2. De todo animal limpio tomarás siete parejas, macho y su hembra; mas de los animales que no son limpios, una pareja, el macho y su hembra.

8. Envió también de sí una paloma, para ver si las aguas se habían retirado de sobre la faz de la tierra.
9. Y no halló la paloma donde sentar la planta de su pie, y volvió a él al arca, porque las aguas estaban aún sobre la faz de toda la tierra. Entonces él extendió su mano, y tomándola, la hizo entrar consigo en el arca.
10. Esperó aún otros siete días, y volvió a enviar la paloma fuera del arca.
11. Y la paloma volvió a él a la hora de la tarde; y he aquí que traía una hoja de olivo en el pico; y entendió Noé que las aguas se habían retirado de sobre la tierra.
12. Y esperó aún otros siete días, y envió la paloma, la cual no volvió ya más a él.
13. Y sucedió que en el año seiscientos uno de Noé, en el mes primero, el día primero del mes, las aguas se secaron sobre la tierra; y quitó Noé la cubierta del arca, y miró, y he aquí que la faz de la tierra estaba seca.
14. Y en el mes segundo, a los veintisiete días del mes, se secó la tierra. The Bronze Beauties of St. Marks

The Original Bronze Horses of St. Marks Basilica
Surrounded by legend. Steeped in mystery. Baffling, bewildering and perplexing. These magnificent bronze horses that pranced high above the arched loggia of St. Marks Basilica in Venice for 500 years have been talked about for centuries, even to this day.
They excite me and fuel my imagination. As I did some research on their beginnings and followed their trail throughout the centuries, I was amazed. It was a trail full of twists and turns that brought them safely ‘home’ to Venice in the end.

Believed to have originally been part of a quadriga, four horses pulling a chariot and driver, their composition is unusual. Made of 98% copper, 1% lead and 1% tin to give a more satisfactory guild, they are the only creations of this mix to survive from antiquity. They were created with long legs and short backs as if to be viewed from below.

Who cast the gilded bronze into these dreamlike mythical horses? Were they loot from Rome, or Greece? Why is their history so vague? So mystifying?
The dawn of their forging has been attributed to classical antiquity, created by the famed Greek sculptor Lysippos in the 4th century BC. Lysippos contrived portraits for Alexander the Great, some of which were equestrian statues.

Curiously, the ears of the four horses of St. Marks and Alexanders horse are almost identical. For this reason, many art historians have drawn conclusions that they were made by the same person. Hmmm….could be.

What is certain about the horses is that they did stand atop the Hippodrome in Constantinople, placed there by emperor Constantine in the mid 320’s, to commemorate the chariot races. And there they stayed for 900 years. But what happened prior to this time?
No one knows for sure. Speculations abound. It is thought that the four “Lysippos” horses were brought to Rome by Nero. Evidently he had it in his mind to use them as decor at his Golden Palace (Domus Aurea).

The Fourth crusade, which became the conquest of Constantinople in the early 13th century, set out to travel by sea. Realizing their need for assistance in getting across the water, they worked out a deal with the Doge of Venice. He was up for it provided they delivered a big chunk of the booty to him as repayment. Prominent in the looted goods from Constantinople were the four horses, which the Doge claimed for himself, along with several other treasures displayed in St. Marks today.

The four horses were not put up on St. Marks Basilica immediately, but stored in the arsenal which left them a constant temptation for metal-hungry cannon makers. A later Doge put them above the loggia of the basilica as a symbol of Venetian power. There they rested for 500 years. Yet there was more to come.
Napoleon looted Venice in 1797, escaping with crates of masterpieces, the famed winged Lion of St. Mark, and the four gilded horses. All were shipped off to Paris, where the horses, along with a chariot, set atop the Arc du Carrousel, the triumphal arch on the Tuileries end of the Champs-Elysees.

In 1815, Vienna sent them back to Venice. Then during world war I, they were moved to Rome for safe keeping. Later during the war (1942), they were removed yet again and hidden in a Benedictine abbey at Praglia, to be returned to St. Marks after the war.
Today, copies of the four horses stand above the central loggia on St. Marks Basilica. The original horses have suffered from pollution and are housed in the museum inside the basilica.

It has been a long and winding road for these remarkable bronze beauties. They prance proudly through time immortal, bearing themselves exquisitely. Their allure and magnificence, adored by the ancient Greeks and Romans, valued enough to be looted and transported from country to country, has brought these mighty beasts worldwide reverence. Who really knows when and how they came into being. They reserve the right to remain mysterious. It is enough that they stay as they are, beautiful and free, ancient yet everlasting.
