Alarmclock

The brass alarm clock placed on the dashboard of the DeLorean by Doc.

"Clocks were Doc Brown's favorite collector's item. He had everything from cuckoo clocks to digital models — and every one was in dead sync with the others. / The presence of some many timepieces was not accidental. Time was Doc Brown's latest, and perhaps final, dominating interest."
—From Back to the Future by George Gipe (quote, page 26)
" He [Marty] was halfway to the workbench where Doc kept his video equipment when a sudden cacophony caused him to jump in spite of himself. Set precisely, every clock with a way to announce the hour went off together — musical chimes, cuckoo sounds, digital beeps. For ten seconds, Marty stood still, listening until the last harbinger of the hour died away. A smile spread across his face, for he never tired of hearing this strange symphony arranged and orchestrated by the world's most fanatical timekeeper, Doc Brown. / "Must be one o'clock," Marty said softly. As indeed it was. "
—From Back to the Future by George Gipe (quote, pages 44 and 45)
" "We have about ten minutes to wait," Marty said, looking at the hall clock [in Hill Valley High School]. / "Ten seconds slow," Brown muttered, comparing it with his pocket watch. "You'd think a public school would at least have the correct time." "
—From Back to the Future by George Gipe (quote, page 141)

Clocks were a primary focus of Dr. Emmett Brown's studies in time travel and physics.

Notable appearances

Doc had almost thirty synchronized clocks in his residence in 1985. Due to a time delaying experiment, all but one became 25 minutes slow.[1] Doc also used two synchronized, LED-display chronometers during the world's first temporal displacement. These had been set to display the hour and the minute only, rather than as a stopwatch.[2] Doc retained one chronometer while the other was hung around Einstein's collar. While the two clocks were in complete synchronization before the trip, Einstein's clock was "exactly one minute behind" afterward.

The clock on the Hill Valley Courthouse became the key to Marty's return to 1985, because it recorded the time and place where lightning would strike, as well as the source for sufficient energy to power the time circuits on the DeLorean time machine to 1985 after being struck by lightning.

Doc's fascination with clocks led, indirectly, to his discovery of how to travel through time. As Doc related to Marty in 1985, he had been "standing on the edge of my toilet, hanging a clock" when he slipped and struck his head, awakening with a vision of the flux capacitor.

Marty wore a digital wristwatch that never seemed to work,[3] although the alarm went off in Lou's Cafe.[4]

Doc placed a brass alarm clock on the dashboard of the DeLorean which he set to go off when it was time for Marty to drive toward the lightning bolt at the clock tower. In 1955, Doc wore three watches — one on the back of his left wrist, one on the front of his right wrist, and a pocket watch. In 1885, Doc wore a pocket watch that Buford borrowed to count down the time for Marty to appear for their duel.

The time circuits of the DeLorean had a built-in clock that kept track of the local time that had been visited, and would adjust for any new time period entered.

A cuckoo clock was part of Doc's automated breakfast maker in 1885, which started making breakfast every morning at 7:00 a.m.

10-hour clock

In the opening sequence with the clocks, just when the on-screen credit caption Christopher Lloyd is depicted, at the end of the name there is a 10-hour clock in the background. It reappears in full view when the credit caption "The Power of Love" - Performed by Huey Lewis and The News is displayed. This timing was officially used in France from 1794 for a little more than six months. This specific clock has a truly unique feature, it operates counterclockwise. The internet is not able to guide to any other such apparatus.

However, the clock shows the wrong time. 7:53 a.m. standard time is 3:28:48 French decimal time, based on the 10-hours-a-day clock; the decimal clock shows 7:85 decimal time (the hour hand is a few minutes fast), which is 18:50:24 or 6:50:24 p.m. standard time.

Behind the scenes

Theme

One of the recurring themes in Back to the Future was the moving forward of clocks, whether by the advancement of the minute hand on an "analog" clock, the changing of a number on a digital clock, or the sounding of a bell or alarm as a time has been reached. When a clock was shown in the film, it was likely that the time would soon change:

  • The clock radio in Marty's bedroom went from 12:27 a.m. to 12:28 a.m. a moment before the phone rang.
  • The clock at Twin Pines Mall changed from 1:15 a.m. to 1:16 a.m. as Marty arrived.
  • Doc and Einstein's LED stopwatches advanced from 1:18 to 1:19 to prove that they were synchronized. After Temporal Experiment #1, Doc displayed his stopwatch advancing from 1:21am to 1:22am while Einstein's was shown to be still ticking and exactly one minute slow.
  • The clock on the Hill Valley Courthouse sounded at 8:30 a.m. as Marty walked into town.
  • The courthouse clock tower bell rang at 10:00 p.m., drowning out what Marty was telling Doc.
  • The courthouse clock advanced from 10:02 to 10:03 while Doc looked on.
  • The minute hand on the courthouse clock advanced from 10:03 p.m. to 10:04 p.m., a moment before the lightning bolt struck.
  • The clock on the Bank of America advanced from 1:23 a.m. to 1:24 a.m. when Marty returned to 1985.
  • The clock radio in Marty's bedroom advanced from 10:27 a.m. to 10:28 a.m., causing the radio to come on.
  • In a reverse of the theme, Marty can be seen moving the minutes backward on the DeLorean's destination time, 1:35 a.m. to 1:24 a.m.
  • In an exception to the theme, the camera focuses on the alarm clock in George's bedroom when Marty scares him into asking Lorraine out on a date. The time is 1:22, but we never see the clock advance to the next minute.

Filming

  • While filming the Back to the Future opening sequence featuring all the clocks in Doc Brown's laboratory, director Robert Zemeckis quipped "I hope they don't think it's a movie about clocks!"[5]
  • As Robert Gale points out in DVD commentary, the opening view of clocks is one of several homages to the 1960 film The Time Machine. Other references are in the simultaneous noises of the clocks reaching 8:00 (a.m. in Back to the Future, p.m. in The Time Machine) and the red, yellow and green colors for the DeLorean time display.
  • There was a continuity error in one scene of Back to the Future, which was re-used in Back to the Future Part II. When Doc returns from the future to get Marty, the brass alarm clock is missing from the dashboard of the DeLorean during the quick shot of the car crashing into some trash cans. The clock is there for the rest of the scene, and all other appearances of the DeLorean's dashboard in Part II and Part III.

Notes and references

  1.  The clock with the correct time can be glimpsed as Marty's skateboard glides to a stop at the case of plutonium. The clock is leaning against Doc's bed, and its hands show the time to be slightly past 8:20
  2.  In commentary on the DVD for Part I, Bob Gale recalled that it "was a pain in the ass... to have both clocks to change at the exact same moment"
  3.  Marty can be seen shaking and listening to his wristwatch, as if to see whether it is still "ticking".
  4.  The beeping alarm sounded a little more than two and a half hours after Marty's departure (at 1:30 a.m.) from 1985. Whether Marty intended for it to or not, the watch's alarm would have awakened him at 4:00 in the morning if he had stayed in bed.
  5.  As seen in behind-the-scenes material in Secrets of the Back to the Future Trilogy video, the Leslie Nielsen-hosted Back to the Future II special on NBC, and the DVD extras
