Interest in the Mary "called Magdalene" in the canonical Christian Gospels of the Greek New Testament has blossomed in the last decades. Who was this Mary, this "other Mary" who was so devoted to Jesus that her presence is reported in all four Gospels at the cross and at the tomb. Who was she, and why was she called "the Magdalene" (h Magdalhnh in Greek). This distinctive epithet of Mary Magdalene is found in all four of the canonical Gospels and in the Gnostic Gospel of Philip discovered at Nag Hammadi in 1945.
Until recently the traditional reply asserts that this "other Mary" was a prostitute from Magdala, a small fishing town located on the western shore to the Sea of Galilee, a town that the Hebrew Talmud says was "destroyed for prostitution." It seems incredible that the most beloved and loyal disciple of Jesus should be said to be from a town with a reputation for loose morals! I would like to discuss here the actual source of Mary Magdalene's extraordinary epithet.
The Aramaic word Magdala means "tower" or "fortress." In Hebrew, the word is spelled mgdl and migdol. The title "Magdalene" implies greatness, exaltation, elevation, and pre-eminence. And in fact, on seven of the eight lists in the New Testament that mention women who followed Jesus, Mary "the Magdalene" is mentioned first. In Matthew 28 we read that on the morning after the Sabbath Mary Magdalene and the "other Mary" went to see the sepulcher. Who is "First Lady" here? Clearly it is Mary Magdalene who has pre-eminence in the early community whose stories are recorded in the Gospels.
For several historical reasons, I do not believe that Mary was from the town of Magdala. In the period of Greek and Roman hegemony in Galilee, the town now known as "Magdala" was called "Taricheae," a Greek name meaning "place of dried fish." According to Josephus, writing in his books about Jewish history, the town was strongly influenced by Hellenistic culture and mores and even sported a hippodrome for chariot races during Biblical times, until its total destruction by the Romans in AD 67. A new town was later built over the ruins of Taricheae, and was called "Magdala Nunnayah," a name mean "Tower of the Fishes" in Aramaic. But during the lifetime of the woman named Mary who anointed Jesus at a banquet and Bethany and later met him resurrected in the Garden on Easter morning, the town was called Taricheae. This is attested in numerous Roman and Jewish records, including several mentions in Josephus.
It appears probable that in trying to discover the source of Mary's distinctive epithet, enthusiastic converts went looking for a town for Mary to have been born in. Not realizing the first century history of the town of Magdala Nunnayah, they decided that she must have come from this town in Galilee which was destroyed for "prostitution." In Jewish tradition, "prostitution" was often ascribed to communities that worshipped foreign gods and was synonymous with "idolatry." But Greek and Latin speaking converts would not have understood that the town they knew as "Magdala" had a history of adopting Hellenistic mores during the period of Greek hegemony over the region, beginning in about 300 BC, prompting the Jews to attribute "prostitution" to the town's reputation prior to its destruction.
Adding to the confusion of the meaning of Magdalene's title is the conflation of Mary Magdalene with the Mary who anointed Jesus at the banquet at the house of Simon in Bethany, just a few days before the Crucifixion. All four Gospels of the New Testament tell the story of the anointing of Jesus by a woman, a literal re-enactment of nuptial rites of ancient pagan fertility cults of "Sacred Marriage" celebrated throughout the Mediterranean Basin. Only Luke transplants this story from Bethany, located on the prophetically significant Mount of Olives, to an unnamed town in Galilee, calling the woman who anointed Jesus "a sinner from the town." Luke does not use the word for prostitute in his indictment of the woman, but her loose hair, with which she dries her tears from his feet, implied that her sin was one of loose behavior. Ignoring the testimony of the other three Gospels, the Church has allowed Mary Magdalene to be slandered as a prostitute for nearly two millennia, thereby stealing her power and silencing her voice. In 1969 the Roman Catholic calendar of Saints' feast days was revised, separating Mary of Bethany from Mary "Magdalene"--thereby splitting the role of the anointing woman in two.
It is my personal conviction that the woman who anointed Jesus at the banquet at Bethany and "wiped his feet with her hair"--Mary of Bethany in John 12--was the same woman who went to anoint his corpse on Easter morning and met him resurrected--Mary Magdalene in John 20. In ancient mythologies of the hieros gamos, it is the Bride who anoints the Bridegroom King, and it is again the Bride who meets him three days later resurrected in the garden. A similar archetypal story celebrating the eternal return of the Life Force is ubiquitous throughout the Middle East in the cults of Inanna, Ishtar, Isis, Aphrodite, Cybele. In the Gospels, Jesus and Mary Magdalene incarnate this "never-ending story" on the physical/historical plane.
Ignoring for a moment the syncretism of these pagan cults, I suggest we look to the Hebrew Bible for the source of Mary Magdalene's distinctive honorific. In about 700 BC, the Hebrew prophet Micah recorded an amazing prophecy for the "Magdal-eder" (Micah 4:8-11).
The Hebrew word Magdal-eder literally means "Tower of the Flock" and refers to a hill near Bethlehem often used as a vantage point by shepherds to survey the surrounding fields. In this prophecy of Micah, the "Magdal-eder" is equated with the Daughter of Sion, the people of Israel, personified as "Jerusalem." This prophecy sums up the fate of Mary Magdalene in four short lines and was, I am convinced, the passage that inspired the person who coined her epithet.
"And you, O Magdal-eder ("Watchtower of the Flock")
Stronghold of the Daughter of Sion,
Unto you shall the former dominion be restored,
the kingdom of Daughter Jerusalem.
Now why do you cry?
Have you no king? Has your counselor perished,
that you cry aloud like a woman in labor?....
For now you shall go out and dwell in the open fields.
To Babylon shall you go,
and from there you shall be rescued....
Now also many nations are gathered against you.
They defile you (call you "unclean").
This prophecy of the "Magdal-eder" provides the image of a woman, the personification of the nation of Israel, crying over her deceased king and counselor (rabbi, teacher), and then sent, defiled and defamed, into foreign exile, eventually to be rescued. Perhaps that time is now! The scenario is repeated in John's Gospel, chapter 20, when Mary is crying at the tomb and Jesus asks her, "Woman, why are you crying." The Greek word gune can mean either "woman" or "wife." Was Jesus actually addressing his WIFE in this familiar passage? When she finally recognizes him, Mary calls him "Rabboni"--a term that expresses greater intimacy and tenderness than the traditional "Rabbi," and then she embraces him. Saint Jerome's translation of the Greek sentence, "Do not touch me," does not convey the true meaning of the the original text. It actually says something closer to, "Do not keep clinging to me" or "embracing me." The Greek word haptou can mean anything from barely touching someone to having sexual relations. Why could Jerome not have chosen a Latin verb that would have conveyed the greater intimacy implied by the Greek. Instead, we've received a tradition of an untouchable "phantom" Jesus rather than that of Jesus who was a husband and lover.
One further argument supports Mary Magdalene as Bride of the Archetypal Bridegroom. In Hebrew and in Greek, each alphabet letter has a numeric value. In coining the Greek phrase "H Magdalhnh," the architects of the New Testament gave this "other Mary" a title whose numeric value (153) reflects powerful associations with the Feminine principle and the Goddesses of the ancient world. The subject of symbolic numbers encoded by gematria into the Christian Gospels is discussed at length in my 2003 book Magdalene's Lost Legacy. Magdalene's sacred number 153 is associated with the vesica piscis -- () or yoni--a symbol universally associated with the Feminine. Ancient Greeks called the vesica piscis the "matrix," the "doorway to life," the "bridal chamber" and even the "Holy of Holies." There is no mistaking the sexual associations of this shape and its feminine nature, deliberately coined into the significant epithet of the Mary called "the Magdalene."
How can we fail to recognize the Lost Bride of the Christian revelation, crying over her deceased Bridegroom and sent, defiled and defamed, into foreign exile? How can we fail to do all in our power to reclaim her true story? Justice and chivalry require that we honor this woman in the role to which the canonical Gospels themselves attest--as the beloved Queen of the messianic King of Israel.
And what of Yin and Yang? Shadow-Female-Wet-Earth-Moon-Compliant/Accommodating v Brightness-Male-Dry-Heavens-Sun-Active/Firm? We have our complements and opposites - and the (inverted) triangles (of the dark 'B' pillar/Earth and Water ... and Moon/Mater) are a "popular symbol for" female - but there are also inconsistencies with other ideas advanced above. Yin and Yang are polarities/opposites, but their imagery is also the mirror/complementary circle made by 6 9 run together with white for male (+ black dot) and black for female (+ white dot). There is obviously similarity to ideas above. If I try to fit Yin and Yang to the 4 Royal Watchers, though, male is the N-S (Sun-Air) axis and female is the E-W axis (Earth-Water). They are not polarised opposites. The symbology of the triangles - upright male and inverted female - found on alchemical J and B pillars fits to the axes, but it is hard to see how any of this is consistent, say, with White Woman of the West and Red Man of the East, the alchemical Moon and Sun. Galen will not fit, either. This female lunar Mercury- male/solar Sulphur symbology is at variance to female Red Rose v Male White which fits to Hindu wedding colours (+ gold) but apparently other cultures/religions have reversed values ...
Um! Water and Winter in the North ... but note the pairings 9-1 (South and North) 2tc = all 10s. Apart from the trigrams, it's the Magic square of Saturn, basically, where all lines = 15 when summed with the middle 5.
Here's something connected, possibly, to the above and to Feng Shui. Both apparently relate to Magic Squares, the numbers of Precession (and of my model!) and all sorts of stuff. Both carry the 8 trigrams. The one below looks like binary 0-7 to me (expressed as twinned pairs): top 7 to bottom 0, then (clockwise and counting out out from the centre, where __ = 1 , then 2, then 4 and -- = 0 wherever it is) 6 and 1, 2 and 5, 4 and 3. Prehistoric constructors obviously had a knowledge of the planets that had been passed down to them from even more ancient times (see Otto Apelt's Translation of Plato's Timaeus, Leipzig 1919). With their help, the three-dimensional relationships were explained, while the Zodiac served to show the course of time. The basis was the supposed agreement of the musical seven-step scale and the "seven" of the then-known planets, including the sun and moon. From this interval, the equation 2 x 3 x 8 x 8 = 384 was determined. Surprisingly, the distance between moon and Earth is 384,000 kilometers; the 384 in a relationship of 1 : 1000. By using the Tetractys, the holy four-count of the Pythagorans, the multiple of it is seen in this pyramid:
1 2 3 4 9 8 27
The multiple of the ratio of the moon could then be used for the other planets. Apelt's work reveals this table:

There are "problems" with figures in this table, such as the figures given for Venus, Mercury, and the sun, but Seurig and Baumann say it is not relevant to their investigations. The numbers were used as ratios in prehistoric astronomy, similar to the numbers of the Zodiac.
New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count is incremented. In many cultures, the event is celebrated in some manner.[1] The New Year of the Gregorian calendar, today in worldwide use, falls on 1 January, as was the case with the Roman calendar. There are numerous calendars that remain in regional use that calculate the New Year differently.
The order of months in the Roman calendar was January to December since King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BC, according to Plutarch and Macrobius. According to Catholic tradition, 1 January is the day of the circumcision of Jesus (on the eighth day from his birth), when the name of Jesus was given to him (Luke 2:21).
It was only relatively recently that 1 January again became the first day of the year in Western culture. Until 1751 in England and Wales (and all British dominions) the new year started on 25 March – Lady Day, one of the four quarter days (the change to 1 January took place in 1600 in Scotland).[2] Since then, 1 January has been the first day of the year. During the Middle Ages several other days were variously taken as the beginning of the calendar year (1 March, 25 March, Easter, 1 September, 25 December).[citation needed][where?] In many countries, such as the Czech Republic, Italy and the UK, 1 January is a national holiday.
With the expansion of Western culture to many other places in the world during recent centuries, the Gregorian calendar has been adopted by many other countries as the official calendar, and the 1 January date of New Year has become global, even in countries with their own New Year celebrations on other days (such as China and India). In the culture of Latin America there are a variety of traditions and superstitions surrounding these dates[clarification needed] as omens for the coming year. The most common modern dates of celebration are listed below, ordered and grouped by their appearance relative to the conventional Western calendar.
It's noteworthy that the name 'Solomon' evokes King David's son, Solomon, both of whom are an integral part of the messianic/Sangreal line. Solomon is also the figure behind Solomon's Temple, the modern version of which is the Dome of the Rock, which is a perfect octagon.
The octagon is closely associated with cross-quarter days (= halfway point between solstice and equinox). As often discussed on this site, cross-quarter days together with solstice/equinox days produce an octagonal configuration when viewed from 'above' the solar system.
It is on one of those cross-quarter days early May, known as Beltane, that the Kentucky Derby with the Queen of England in attendance will take place this year. This is even 'acknowledged' by the UK flag 'Union Jack' which, as you can see, has a 'cross-quarter' configuration:
The Queen's planned visit to Lexington before and/or after the Derby, home to the University of Kentucky and its renowned college basketball team, is filled with important and sometimes amusing signals as well. The 'UK' abbreviation (University of Kentucky) evokes 'United Kingdom' (UK) for starters.
UK's basketball coach Tubby Smith suddenly left in March. The top candidate to replace him at UK was Billy Donovan, who started his coaching career under Rick Pitino at UK and as a Florida head coach just won the championship in Atlanta on April 2nd (Resurrection earthquake day). Florida became undisputed king by beating Ohio State, whose logo is... an octagon.

I would compare the situation to what we had with Discovery STS-114 - the 'Return To Space' space shuttle mission last summer. I covered the event (its 'ritualistic' design) in great detail on this website, focusing particularly on the 'message' encoded in its landing August 9th. You may recall that there was so much speculation as to the prospect of Discovery ending up like its predecessor, Columbia, upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere. (It was hardly a trouble-free mission so that certainly helped fuel the speculation.) I was focusing on Discovery since before its launch and by the time of landing I had distanced myself from the growing disaster speculation, stressing the mission's symbolism instead.
Update (Feb. 1): Reading back my old posts from July-August just made me remember that there was also a similar 'nuclear threat' rumor going around at the time of Discovery's landing! And here is what I wrote back then:
Unlike many out there (or because there are many out there anticipating this), I'm not particularly worried about a nucIear attack and such (well, not just yet). While 'nucIear' is a key theme, it is Peak Oil that seems to be emerging as the central component in the 'omen' aspect of the 'Contact communication'.
Discoverydid land safely, completing a mission lasing 333 hours and 33 minutes, and while people were beginning to move on to other things, I was actually astounded by what the landing revealed behind the veil. It was so 'magical' and tangible that to me it was a form of 'Contact' and I have not yet fully disclosed this finding - but I plan to soon enough.
One of the key aspects of Discovery's 'message' was that its landing came during a cross-quarter window, that of 'Lughnasadh'. ('Cross-quarter days' mark the midpoints between the solstices and the equinoxes.) And the whole STS-114 mission was peppered with allusions to one particular CQ day - Imbolc. (Yes, Imbolc is one of the four cross-quarter days.)
Lughnasadh is actually Imbolc in the Southern Hemisphere. And STS-114 was special due to its 'Return To Space' nature, i.e. the first space shuttle mission since the destruction of Columbia on Feb. 1, 2003, or the day of Imbolc. 'Damage Plan #2' disclosed on/around Dec. 8, '05 reinforced this cross-quarter correlation and prompted me to highlight the upcoming Imbolc, i.e. now.
Note that Discovery landed on Aug. 9th - the anniversary of Nagasaki getting nuked. So it is actually no surprise that we have: 1) the nuke attack rumor, 2) a US military nuclear terrorism exercise taking place 1/31-2/2, 3) the Iran nuclear issue in the background that suddenly intensified in January, and 4) Bush addressing America's 'addiction to oil' and (reportedly) nuclear energy in his State of the Union speech later today.
In the "select a sum" menu, the first three words of the Bible (913 + 203 + 86) have a gematria sum of 1202, the 10th points on the surface of a stella octangula, (12 × 10² +2) = 1202. The sum of the factors of 2701 (37 × 73) is 110, the 3rd points on the surface of a stella octangula (12 × 3² +2) = 110. Also note that 913 – 203 + 86 – 401 + 395 – 407 + 296 = 679, the 7th stella octangula n(2n² –1). The stella octangula is a three-dimensional version of a two-dimensional hexagram. If rotated just right in a shadow, it becomes a perfect Star of David. Two tetrahedrons fused into each other and offset 180 degrees, it is the only polyhedron that is perfectly inscribed in a cube. Here is an example of a stella octangula inscribed in a cube:
Figurate numbers extend beyond the first verse. For instance, the total gematria value of the first eight words is 3003, the number 3003 being the 77th triangle number, (77² +77)/2 = 3003. From the second verse (Gen. 1:2) are the words, "And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." The total gematria value of this sentence is 1369 (37 × 37), a squared star number. One can also think of 1369 as the compound figurate shape of a hexagram of hexagrams. Genesis 1:4, the 4th verse of the Bible, has a gematria total of 1776 (37 × 48).
Just as He gave exact measurements for the Tabernacle, God also gave precise specifications for garments that the Levite priests wore. While ministering to God in holy office, the chief priest wore an ephod in finely embroidered blue, purple and red. Over his heart, he wore the Breastplate of Judgment as a memorial before God. The names of the twelve tribes of Israel were engraved in carbuncle, topaz, sardius, diamond, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, agate, ligure, jasper, onyx and beryl (Ex. 28:17-20). Set in gold filigree, the gems were in four rows and three columns. Below are the order and gematria value for each name.
