I've always wondered why so many people are into gambling. Okay, sometimes you want to play - especially when you're bored or have a free evening. But many people do it systematically: some play poker, some bet on sports, some go to the casino. I used to think that it was purely because of the hope of winning money, but it seems that this is not always the case. Maybe there are some psychological reasons? Or is it something else altogether, like communication? It would be interesting to hear how you feel about it and what motivates you to play.

It turns out that gambling is often not about money, but about a sense of belonging. People want to be part of something - group, community. For example, my friends and I have tradition of getting together once a month and playing card games. The winnings are purely symbolic, but the emotions are real. There is a great article here — https://www.activenoon.com/social-identity-in-gambling/, it explains well why gambling can be part of social identity. We don’t just play — we laugh, share news, feel that we are together. It’s almost like a club of interests. Well, yes, sometimes luck smiles — and this is just a bonus.

Yes, that’s right! I bet on sports not so much for the sake of winning, but because of the drive when you discuss the match with friends, make predictions and root together. It unites. Even if you lose — you still get emotions. When your team wins, and you predicted it — it’s a thrill! And it seems to me that the more you are involved in some community, the stronger the craving for gambling, but not in a bad sense, but as a way to spend time with those who are close to you in spirit.
