envenena progresivamente ( mezclándole ricina con morfina en la misma inyección que le administra para el dolor )  a su hija adolescente , que está a punto de morir de una extraña enfermedad , la Linfangiectasia .  Los médicos no se explican que le pasa. Poco antes de morir, la joven intenta explicar a su mejor amiga lo que le ha estado pasando , para que pueda proteger a su hermana pequeña.
La historia es ficiticia , pero intenta concienciar al público del Síndrome de Munchausen que se da en cuidadores de enfermos y ancianos .

LINFANGIECTASIA . La enfermedad de Waldmann o linfangiectasia intestinal primitiva es una enteropatía exudativa producida por anomalía de los canales linfáticos de la pared intestinal , causando pérdida de proteinas y de grasas ( esteatorrea ) , conservando la absorción de hidratos de carbono ( obstrucción postmucosa de los conductos linfáticos )  . Existen formas familiares de transmisión autosómica dominante. El tratamiento dietético que aporta triglicéridos de cadena media ha modificado su evolución. Esta afección aparece en la primera infancia, pero observaciones de alteración más precoz han sido publicadas, entre ellas un caso diagnosticado prenatalmente.

Toma su nombre del excéntrico Karl Friedrich Hieronymus, Barón de Münchhausen  (1720-1797), quien se hizo famoso por contar historias de aventuras fantásticas que nunca le habían sucedido, como haber bailado en el estómago de una ballena o haber viajado a la luna.
Trastorno mental que se caracteriza por sufrir padecimientos a consecuencia de crear dolencias para asumir el papel de enfermo. El paciente «crea» y hasta se produce autolesiones para lograr unos síntomas físicos y/o psicológicos con conciencia de acción, pero forzado a ello por una impulsión relacionada a su necesidad de consideración por terceras personas de ser asistido .

El enfermo finge síntomas de forma repetida y consistente, en ausencia de un trastorno, enfermedad o incapacidad somática o mental confirmados. En el plano somático el enfermo puede producirse a sí mismo cortes o erosiones para sangrar o inyectarse a sí mismo sustancias tóxicas. La simulación del dolor y la insistencia sobre el hecho de la presencia de sangre puede ser tan convincente y persistente que conduzca a investigaciones e intervenciones repetidas en varios hospitales o consultas diferentes, a pesar de la obtención de hallazgos negativos repetidos.

El film nos plantea el SÍNDROME DE MÜNCHHAUSEN POR PODER .  (MSBP), llamado en inglés Münchhausen Syndrome by power o by proxy, es un término acuñado por un médico de origen inglés, el médico Samuel Roy Meadow, al referirse a lo que él consideró un trastorno en el que una persona, generalmente el cuidador o la madre del niño, deliberadamente causa lesión , enfermedad o trastorno a otra persona, generalmente el hijo. La comunidad médica es escéptica ante la existencia del MSBP que, hasta el momento no ha sido reconocido oficialmente. El médico que acuñó este concepto, Roy Meadow, fue desacreditado debido a que, luego de actuar de perito de parte en casos de condenas por filicidio ( parricidio = Delito cometido por el que mata a su ascendiente o descendiente,directos o colaterales,o a su cónyuge ) , pudo comprobarse que había falseado la información y, por ese hecho, perdió su matrícula profesional.
