Está constituido por tierras denominadas llanos, carentes de formaciones elevadas notorias. Pertenece al región de la pampa húmeda. Sus tierras son aptas para el cultivo y la cría de ganado, como así también para el asentamiento de humanos.
El suelo es rico en minerales y las napas subterráneas se encuentran a poca distancia de la superficie, lo que facilita la extracción de agua. En sus orígenes y hasta ahora, las aguas son aptas para el consumo humano.
La región responde a las subfallas «del Río Paraná», y «del Río de la Plata», y a la falla de «Punta del Este», con sismicidad baja; y su última expresión se produjo el 5 de junio de 1888 (136 años), a las 3.20 UTC-3, con una magnitud aproximadamente de 5,0 en la escala de Richter (terremoto del Río de la Plata de 1888).8

La denominación del pago de la Magdalena se encuentra documentada por primera vez en un acta del Cabildo de Buenos Aires del 21 de marzo de 1611. A partir de la segunda fundación de Buenos Aires por Juan de Garay el 11 de junio de 1580, comienza la colonización de estas tierras, al distribuir parcelas entre quienes secundaron su empresa. Éstas se repartieron tomando como punto de partida el Valle de Santa Ana, que se encontraba en la actual entrada a la Ciudad de Magdalena.
En épocas prehistóricas, un brazo del mar cubría las costas del distrito: el mar Querandino, hace de 10.000 a 7.000 años, se internaba en el actual río Paraná, hasta la Ciudad de Santa Fe. Al retirarse el mar, dejó en seco grandes bancos de conchas marinas, conformando los yacimientos de conchillas, que a los costados de los caminos, hoy se observan a simple vista.
Siendo ésta, la característica principal del subsuelo de Magdalena. La mayoría de los moluscos marinos poseen un esqueleto duro por lo que este fósil se preserva por muchos años. Los fósiles de caracoles más comunes son: Zidona, Mactra, Tagelus, Erodona, Diodora, Ostrea, entre otros. De esas épocas llamadas del Holoceno (nuestros últimos 10 milenios) son los fósiles de mega fauna que se hallaron en el subsuelo magdalenense, como el toxodón (con aspecto de un toro con joroba), gliptodonte (similar a una mulita o peludo gigante), estegomastodón (es el antepasado del elefante), cuyos restos fósiles podemos ver en el Museo Histórico de Magdalena.
El Pago de la Magdalena se extendía desde el riachuelo hasta el río Salado, comprendiendo los actuales municipios de Avellaneda, Lanús, Lomas de Zamora, Quilmes, Esteban Echeverría, Ezeiza, Alte Brown, Berazategui, Florencio Varela, Ensenada, Berisso, La Plata, Chascomús, San Vicente, Gral Paz, Brandsen, Punta Indio y Magdalena. Más partes de los actuales Cañuelas, Monte y Castelli.
En Magdalena hay deportistas destacados en futbol, cómo Francisco Apaolaza, futbolista argentino que actualmente juega en Carabobo F.C (Venezuela). Guido Carrillo, jugador de Estudiantes de La Plata, Matías Pellegrini, actual jugador de Vélez Sarsfield. Cómo así también en sensei Gustavo Tata, supervisor de IOGKF Sudamérica desde 2008, jefe instructor de Karate Do IOGKF-ARGENTINA, Coordinador en Sudamérica en Goju Ryu-Karate Do IOGKF-ARGENTINA desde el 6 de agosto de 1999 hasta la fecha.
El primer edificio municipal fue construido en 1856 y estaba situado en la esquina de las calles Obligado y Pintos (actualmente Brenan e Yrigoyen). En 1877 se resuelve la construcción del actual Palacio Municipal, realizada por Pedro Cavalli, el edificio cuenta con dos plantas, la planta baja destinada a dependencias administrativas y en la planta alta se encuentra el salón de actos o recepciones, donde se realizaban fiestas y actividades sociales, un balcón terraza con techo sostenido por columnas, al igual que el interior del salón. Actualmente funcionan las dependencias y el recinto del Concejo Deliberante, conservando su mobiliario original, con sillones estilo Luis XVI realizados a fines del siglo xix.
La Primitiva Capilla, se inauguró el 20 de noviembre de 1776. La piedra fundamental del nuevo templo data del 3 de junio de 1860. En el libro de sesiones de la municipalidad de fecha 8 de mayo de ese año menciona que el padrino será el señor Sixto Fernández, elegido por unanimidad en dicha reunión, cuyo acto (el de la colocación de la piedra fundamental), debe realizarse el día 25 de mayo. Este renunció por razones de salud. Acto continuo se nombró al señor Juan F. Escribano. Del mismo libro, sesión del 28 de mayo de 1860. Se armaron cinco comisiones, una por cada cuartel de Magdalena, para levantar suscripciones de animales entre los vecinos a fin de juntar dinero para la obra del Templo. Cada vecino contribuiría con un animal.
El ilustre párroco que tuvo fue Manuel Máximiliano Alberti, en 1790 se lo nombró cura y vicario interino del partido de la Magdalena (Buenos Aires, 28 de mayo de 1763 – 31 de enero de 1811), fue un sacerdote de Buenos Aires, en los tiempos en que la actual ciudad argentina formaba parte del Virreinato del Río de la Plata. Formó parte de la Primera Junta que reemplazó a las autoridades españolas tras la Revolución de Mayo.
Por Ley 11.512 de 1994, sancionada por el Honorable Senado y Cámara de Diputados de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, se declara Monumento Histórico Provincial al Templo Parroquial de Magdalena, testimonio arquitectónico del curato de la Magdalena.
La primera «Ciudad de la Divina Misericordia» se encuentra en la Argentina en la localidad de Magdalena, Provincia de Buenos Aires, y fue declarada por el que ahora es San Juan Pablo II (El Papa de la Misericordia y La Familia) fue gracias a los esfuerzos del entonces párroco de la iglesia Santa María Magdalena, Monseñor Ángel Diamante D'Auro; allí se venera la réplica de la imagen original de Jesús Misericordioso que en 1934 pintara Eugeniusz Kazimirowski en Vilnus según las indicaciones de Santa Faustina Kowalska; en un templo de un esplendor maravilloso en el que se respira la espiritualidad y al que se puede llegar fácilmente por la Ruta 11 desde la Ciudad de La Plata, Arquidiócesis a la que pertenece la Parroquia.
El actual cura párroco de Magdalena es el presbítero Alfredo López Morilla.
Inaugurado el 22 de julio de 1899. En realidad es la casa social de la Sociedad Española de Socorros Mutuos. Su primer Presidente fue Pedro Goenaga y en el momento de la construcción del edificio e inauguración la institución fue presidida por Carmelo Egues. La piedra fundamental fue colocada el 1 de enero de 1896, constaba de una caja de hierro que contenía el acta firmada por los padrinos, por la comisión y los socios presentes, más un ejemplar del Correo Español, un periódico local, monedas, medallas, un reglamento y una memoria de la sociedad. Todo esto colocado en otra caja de madera. Esta sociedad se conforma a partir de un grupo de inmigrantes, los que comenzaron a asociarse para “autoformar” la sociedad y reconstruir dos de los más importantes poderes que quedan fuera de la órbita del Estado o del mercado: el poder social que suponen los principios de solidaridad y el mantenimiento de la memoria de los orígenes de la patria que se ha dejado.
Así logran generar, a través de la ayuda mutua entre sus miembros, la reducción de la vulnerabilidad personal, así como paliar la incertidumbre que la inserción en una nueva sociedad ocasiona.
En el momento de la erección de la Capilla (1776), frente a la misma se fue creando un lugar de esparcimiento. Para el año 1826 el Arq. Saubidet realiza el trazado del primer egido, en él la plaza ocupaba dos manzanas, la actual y la que ocupa el Centro Cultural.
Durante la administración de Lázaro Miranda (1869) se colocó una pirámide en alusión a la Pirámide de Mayo.
A comienzos del siglo xx se coloca una fuente de mármol con peces de colores e hipocampos.
Actualmente está rodeada por los principales edificios de la ciudad. Espacio verde con valiosos elementos decorativos como los copones, la fuente, un retoño del olivo de Jerusalén e importante monumento al Gral. José de San Martín inaugurado el 7 de mayo de 1949.
Se inaugura el 27 de septiembre de 1997 la primera etapa que incluía el Museo, la oficina de turismo, sala de exposiciones y talleres. Posteriormente en el año 2004 se traslada al mismo la Dirección de Cultura, Prensa y Deporte de la Municipalidad de Magdalena.
Reserva de Biósfera Parque Costero del Sur y Reserva Natural Provincial El Destino
En el Partido bonaerense de Magdalena está el Parque Costero Sur de administración estatal nacional, una franja de 23500 hectáreas declarada Reserva Mundial de la Biosfera por la UNESCO, porque conserva relictos de lo que fue el ambiente natural del nordeste bonaerense. Tocando el parque costero en su límite sur, se encuentra La reserva Natural El Destino, una reserva de 1500 hectáreas de administración privada.910
Son varias las instituciones sociales y de fomento (Sociedad Italiana, Sociedad Española), deportivas (Club Social Deportivo y Fomento Villa Garibaldi, Club Social Deportivo Unión y Fuerza, Club Sport) y sobre todo folclóricas y tradicionalistas (La Totora y Gauchos de Magdalena) en la ciudad de Magdalena. Otra institución es el Club Social y Deportivo Atalaya, si bien queda en la localidad de Atalaya, es dentro del partido de Magdalena.
Con la obra del Canal Magdalena, la Argentina avanzará hacia el fortalecimiento de la soberanía nacional y podrá impulsar aún más las economías regionales. Para esa importante tarea, el Gobierno dio el puntapié inicial creando una unidad ejecutora especial con el objetivo de asistir y asesorar en el llamado, adjudicación y firma de contrato de la licitación pública nacional e internacional para la ejecución de las tareas de dragado, señalización y mantenimiento del sistema de esa vía de navegación.
Al respecto, en dialogo con este medio, el presidente del Centro de Ex Combatientes Islas Malvinas de La Plata y profesor del Seminario Malvinas Comunicación y Nación de esta casa de estudios Rodolfo Carrizo consideró: “Venimos participando de diferentes foros y múltiples debates sobre el Canal Magdalena, y entendemos que el dragado, el mantenimiento y posibles mejoras son de una importancia estratégica y geopolítica para el presente y futuro de nuestra Nación”.
El titular del Cecim añadió que “esas acciones cobran mayor importancia si se las piensa en el contexto de consolidar la soberanía marítima y como un vínculo indispensable con las vías navegables de todo el territorio nacional y el Atlántico Sur”.
Cabe señalar que las obras planteadas permitirán a los buques contar con una nueva conexión directa entre el sistema fluvial y el océano, que se desarrollará por aguas de jurisdicción nacional y la traza consistirá en un canal rectilíneo a desarrollarse en un sector del Río de La Plata. De esta forma, el país contará con una salida directa al Atlántico que potenciará el federalismo portuario facilitando el acceso a los puertos nacionales.
“Desde el Cecim La Plata ratificamos la legitimidad de promover este debate para la ejecución de esta importante obra, donde la misma le brindará al pueblo argentino una oportunidad de construir un horizonte previsible de múltiples convenios económicos, trabajo genuino y soberanía económica”, explicó Carrizo.
El docente y titular del Centro agregó que “la Argentina tiene una oportunidad en la construcción del Canal Magdalena que es imperativo capitalizar, divulgar y promocionar por su importancia geoestratégica y geoeconómica, una oportunidad para la integración física de los ríos con el mar y a la vez de los pueblos del Cono Sur”.
La proyección de esta obra, que tiene una inversión millonaria, es de dos años y se constituye en una política pública para el desarrollo de la soberanía argentina.
It’s about the discovery of an astounding system of literal ‘rivers of time’, which may even be described as the ‘fingerprints of the gods’. A lot of very positive feedback has been received from those who have read The Time Rivers and/or The Nile Decoded. Some samples are posted here.
What about the reaction of the 'alternative history' crowd? How are they responding to the 'quantum leap' that the TRT would represent to their field? The answer to this question is not yet clear since the theory was revealed only recently and is not yet widely known. But the anticipation here is that the reaction would be more or less mixed. Because the Time River Theory is something that radically shifts the whole paradigm, there will probably be those in the field who are perhaps just too 'old' (at least mentally) to keep up with the sudden and rapid movement forward. And this is fine; the Time River system is a discovery for a new generation of truth seekers who maintain a fresh mind capable of clear and creative thinking.
There is actually so much more to the Time River scheme than made available so far (including the book), which is undoubtedly contributing to the tone of confidence expressed here. Hopefully there are many of you who can intuitively sense this 'energy' lurking just beneath the surface... It's all getting ready to come out now. A "Tower of Babel" - officially called "Memory Tower" - was erected during Beijing's closing ceremony on August 24, 2008. Per traditional symbolism, the Babylonian "gate of the gods" unites heaven and earth.
Five days later, a film starring Vin Diesel called Babylon A.D. was released in theaters.
Originally titled (novel) "Babylon Babies", the story revolves around a mysterious girl with supernatural powers named... Aurora.
Her big secret is that she's been technologically modified to become a "virgin" mother who miraculously gives birth to messianic twins. This is eventually revealed to be a fake miracle planned and orchestrated by a power-hungry religious group to boost membership.
August 29- Babylon A.D. release date - adds to the pregnancy/birth theme as it is the birthday of the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, associated with the Milky Way/Nile andthe flood ("water breaking") and considered a herald of imminent birth.
In 2005, August 29 was the exact date of New Orleans' "water breaking" impact moment when Hurricane Katrina made landfall there... right at the midpoint of a Galactic-Mayan timeline directly involving the year 2012.
"Katrina" means "Catherine" as in Catherine "Kate" Middleton, i.e. the UK princess whose pregnancy/childbirth we've been long projecting for the Mayan window of 2012-2013 on our sites (Etemenanki/STRUG).
August 29 is also Judgment Day in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The series is all about an inter-temporal battle over the pregnancy, birth and survival of a "messianic" figure, John Connor, the son of Sarah whose name means "princess".

In the most recent installment in the Terminator film series (Terminator Salvation) the messianic protagonist John Connor is played by actor Christian Bale, who back in 2008 also became... Batman ("Bruce Wayne"). Christian Bale is Batman in The Dark Knight Rises (2012). The Aurora shooter reportedly claimed he was The Joker, Batman's nemesis.
Martian Grail King Rises:
"Terminator" is also an astronomical term referring to the dividing line between light/day and shadow/night on the surface of a celestial body. The only "terminator" we can see in everyday life is that of the Moon (i.e. the phases of the Moon) which is Diana (Moon goddess). Kate Middleton married Princess Diana's first son, Prince William, a messianic figure in the mold of the Once and Future King ("Arthur"), whose first child she should be pregnant with soon if not already.
It was a potent sign, right at the start of the year 2012, that NASA's "GRAIL" twin spacecraft entered orbit around the Moon/Diana (on New Year's Eve/Day).
The "Holy Grail" is obviously of great significance to not only Prince William but the whole British Royal Family, having to do with the semi-historical issue of the messianic "Grail bloodline." (Holy Grail = Sangreal = Royal Blood.) The GRAIL mission ("Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory") is all about mapping the gravitational field of the Moon or in effect scanning the interior or "womb" of Diana, or interchangeably, "womb of Kate Middleton." The word "gravity" is related to the Latin word gravidity (meaning "heavy") which is a scientific term for the state of... pregnancy. You get the point.
Aurora in Babylon A.D. gives birth to twin "Babylon Babies". NASA's GRAIL consists of twin lunar spacecraft.
Another telling clue is the date of the Aurora massacre itself, "July 20," the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Though often overlooked, it's also a Martian date as it was on July 20, 1976 that NASA's Viking 1 mission made history by successfully landing on the Red Planet for the first time.
The Aurora tragedy took place in "Colorado," a name meaning "colored red" in Spanish. The shooter dyed his hair orange-red.
For more blatant Martian signals, we have a remake of Total Recallcoming mere 7 days after the start of the London Olympics. The original 1990 version starring Schwarzenegger was all about (resurrecting) Mars. The new version is set in... UK/London.
Then two days later on August 5, NASA's MSL/Curiosity will attempt a dramatic landing on... Mars.
This will make huge headlines around the world, seriously challenging the Olympics for the media's attention. This will in effect telegraph the notion that the underlying idea of the royal Grail/Babylon baby and bloodline are somehow "Martian" in nature. It's no coincidence that Disney film John Carter was released early March - a story set on Mars, based on the novel... A Princess of Mars.
A phi-based Mayan time code connects all this to the Royal Wedding and (the Gulf of) Mexico where the Maya lived/live.
"Maya" is today Mexico and the name "Mexico" via Mextlirefers to a "god of war" which in Roman mythology is Mars. "Mexico" via Mexihco means "Place at the Center of the Moon" implying "in the womb of Diana". Or, "In-Diana"... i.e. Indiana.
Between January's GRAIL/Phobos-Grunt and March's John Carter (of Mars)/Mars close encounter, we had a bigger "ritual" in the form of the Super Bowl featuring Madonna at halftime (February 5)... in Indiana.

I can already hear the grumblings: "Why should the royals be so special as to be considered extraterrestrial?" "Are we expected to worship them as gods?" "This is bullshit, I refuse to accept their disgusting elitism!"
Relax. It's a story. A movie. You're being fed information in coded form. It's not being force-fed. Only you can prevent yourself from broadening your knowledge and understanding.
Symbols help us think. A "king" or "queen" as a leader represent the people. The nature of the people is ideally reflected in the one on the throne. Where the leader goes, the people go. As the leader, so the people. In concept at least.
So the suggested extraterrestrial, "Martian" nature of the royal Grail/Babylon bloodline, particularly the upcoming royal baby, would also apply in some way to the rest of mankind. The story of us. Our Genesis. That's where Prometheus comes in, another massively hyped movie released this year at the time of the Venus Transit early June. All about mankind's extraterrestrial origin.
The mythological figure Prometheus, a titan, created humans and gave them fire. The Olympic flame officially represents this Promethean fire.

All this is essentially a continuation of the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, the symbolic communication we witnessed there. Greece is the birthplace/genesis of the Olympic Games. 2004 was the year of the previous Transit of Venus (2004 & 2012). Martian panspermia, Martian pregnancy, Martian birth... The Holy Grail. I should know, I wrote all about it in 2004.
At this point I should remind the reader that I accurately predicted (and I don't use that term lightly) the William-Kate royal engagement almost to the day in 2010 (see Lucifer's Destiny). A full year before that, I had already started projecting what would be happening in 2010-2012. This was back in 2009 when there was no sign of a royal engagement:

A straightforward interpretation would be that Prince William will become King William in or around 2012. If not literal, then this should at least be a major symbolic storyline set to (if not already) drive key world events in/around 2010-2012. [red emphasis added]
Well, here we are in 2012 and things are indeed in motion as far as the British Royal Family per our prognostication.
The Olympic ceremonies are a "mega-ritual," not doubt about that. So many people out there are shouting: "Oh my god, alien invasion! Project Blue Beam! False flag attack!" It's understandable but most are just new at this. I've been at this for more than a decade. I was heavily into this it before 9/11. I can point to the fact that I wrote an article on the 9/11 attacks in October 2001 from a multicontextual perspective that's not so different from what I talk about today... including Mars.
From experience I can say that foresight is not something easily attained. Our reality is not static, it's dynamic. The future is fluid and influenced by what we do, see, and are aware of in the present. The future reacts to our actions and perception so as not to "reward" the unworthy with the gift of foresight. The more purely you align with truth, the more you are "worthy", that is to say, the more you resonate with the future (unrealized possibilities). Most "conspiracy theorists" don't have this quality in them which requires a great sense of balance, lots of self-examination and ego-control. That's why 99.999% of the time they can't foresee anything correctly. Their uncontrolled ego magnet screws up the truth compass. If you can't start from a place of no assumptions and no preconceived worldview, you won't get far. If you go "I'm a Christian" or "I'm an atheist", or "I'm looking for conspiracies by the NWO, the stinking Illuminati!" for instance, you're immediately done right there before you even start, a dead-ender. Talk about self-sabotage. It's so easy to contaminate our reality/future vision with our conscious and subconscious preconceptions. So, while listening to folks like Alex Jone might initially help you deprogram yourself from the mainstream unquestioning mindset, constantly listening to the endless stream of their version of "I hate my parents, they ruined my life, bahhhh!" day in and day out, well, now that's just another worldview programming, another religion, yes, "mind control." It's very unhealthy. You need to stay balanced so as not to get stuck in a fixed line of thinking. That just makes you a robot.
Back to "King William 2012"... Here we are in 2012, just days away from the London Olympics, and "signs" such as the Aurora mass shooting keep pointing to the same storyline, the focus more on royal pregnancy than coronation per se though that's exactly what we see depicted in the London Olympic logo (as I interpreted it back in 2007):
- Prince William turns 30 (= XXX) in 2012 - 2012 Olympics = Games of the XXX Olympiad
"Coronation" of course has its celestial counterpart in corona, meaning "crown". Corona is the plasma atmosphere around the Sun (or other celestial body) that you can see during a total eclipse.
Though technically not identical, a "solar atmosphere" is conceptually interchangeable with "solar wind"... which in turn encodes the name of the British Royal Family, "Windsor".
It is also the "atmosphere/wind" of the Sun, in the form of solar flares and CMEs bombarding the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, that produces auroras.
In this context, a "coronation ritual" can take place celestially via "solar wind" and auroras around the earth, in effect crowning the entire planet or all of us. Martian king... Martian race... here on earth. And we are apparently about to get an opportunity to have a "total recall" of our forgotten ("Martian") genesis, how we began.
The entire period of the London Olympics is "radioactive." But I'm going to go ahead and say that I see the latter part of August as a window for big things. Anchor dates ~August 24 and 29.

NOTE: For those new here, please note that this strange thing that I do on this website is not the typical hindsight-driven dot connecting stuff that you may have seen out there. Here, much emphasis is placed on foresight. I regularly make predictions or multicontextual pattern projections to demonstrate that it is something very real - albeit 'impossible' according to the current paradigm - that I discuss and try to show again and again. So, for instance, even though I decided not to bring it up in the main text of the article purely for readabililty, both the April 2009 Italian earthquake and the January 2010 Haiti 'Big One' were, to a considerable degree, projected beforehand. (See here & here - the latter not including STRUG entries thus appearing less impressive than what was actually going on 'underground' projection-wise.) Even the latest Chile mega-quake was no surprise around here (especially on STRUG) - evidenced by the fact that I was able to quickly write up and post this article within 24 hours of the catastrophe. For many months, in fact, I kept highlighting the Vancouver Olympics (Feb 12-28) and its general timeframe, based on various patterns, in particular the following golden/phi-based timecode which had 'Big One' (mega-quake) written all over it.
Not surprisingly, there was to be further twists which I was able to closely follow, leading me to make a necessary adjustment just in time for (i.e. before) the early-January quakes including Haiti. (I haven't yet fully explained what caused me to make the adjustment but that it was a valid move is obviously not in question.) After Haiti, the status of the February 2010 window became uncertain - was it still radioactive or had it released all its energy in January? We now know the answer: Another small time shift, another 'Big One' (this time in Chile), coming the day before the closing ceremony of the 'V Olympics' instead of the opening ceremony. And it was decidedly pentagonal in nature. This is important because in addition to what's already been discussed the pentagram is nearly synonymous with (i.e. found encoded in its geometry) the golden ratio, i.e. '1 : 1.618', therefore linking back to the phi-based timecode above.
The Fountains in Paris originally provided drinking water for city residents, and now are decorative features in the city's squares and parks. Paris has more than two hundred fountains, the oldest dating back to the 16th century. It also has more than one hundred Wallace drinking fountains.[1] Most of the fountains are the property of the municipality.

The history of fountains in Paris until the mid-19th century was the history of the city's struggle to provide clean drinking water to its growing population. The building of fountains also depended upon the law of gravity; until the introduction of mechanical pumps, the source of the water had to be higher than the fountain for the water to flow.
In the third century BC, the original inhabitants, the Parisii, took their water directly from the River Seine. By the first century BC, the Roman engineers of the town of Lutetia had built the aqueduct of Arcueil using gravity to provide water for their baths and for their public fountains.
In the Middle Ages, the Roman aqueduct of Arcueil had fallen into ruins and residents once again took their water from the Seine or from wells. By the reign of Philip II of France (1180–1223), two large monasteries existed outside the city walls north of Paris; the Abbey of Saint-Laurent, at the foot of Montmartre, and the Abbey of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. These monasteries received fresh water from two aqueducts; the Abbey of Saint Laurent by lead pipes coming from the heights of Romaineville and Menilmontant, and the Abbey of Saint-Martin-des-Champs by a masonry aqueduct coming from the summit of Belleville. In the first half of the 13th century, these two aqueducts were used to supply water to the first recorded fountains in medieval Paris, the Fontaine des Halles, the Fontaine des Innocents, and the Fontaine de Maubuée.[3] These fountains did not gush water; water poured out continually in thin streams from bronze masquerons, masks, usually of animals, into stone basins so local residents could fill their vessels with water.
By 1498, when Louis XII of France became King, the water supply of Paris was controlled jointly by the merchants of the city, led by the Prévot des Marchands, and the king. They decided how water would be distributed and were responsible for building public fountains. The water supply of Paris was still very limited; by the end of the 15th century, there were only seventeen fountains providing water in Paris, including five outside the walls. All of the fountains were on the Right Bank; the two aqueducts supplied water, and, as the water table was close to the surface, and it was easy to dig wells there, while on the Left Bank the water table was deep underground and there were no working aqueducts so almost all water had to be carried from the Seine. As a result, the Left Bank had hardly grown since the time of Philip II.[4]
In the early 17th century, King Henry IV of France decided to bring water to the Left Bank for the university and for the planned Luxembourg Palace of his wife, Marie de' Medici. A new aqueduct was built between 1613 and 1623 to bring water from Rungis. This new aqueduct supplied six new fountains on the Left Bank, including the present-day Medici Fountain, and one on the Right Bank. In addition, five new fountains were built on the right bank using the two original aqueducts. Henry's brought Tommaso Francini, a Florentine fountain maker, to Paris, where he designed the Medici Fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg. In 1636 he became the Intendant general des Eaux et Fontaines, in charge of all royal fountains and water projects. His descendants held this title until 1781.[5]
Another major contribution of Henry IV was the construction between 1578 and 1608 of La Samaritaine, an enormous hydraulic water pump, powered by a water wheel under the Pont Neuf, which lifted water up from the Seine to a reservoir near Saint-Germain-l'Auxerois, for use in the Louvre Palace and the Tuileries Gardens. Two more pumps were added in 1673. Thanks to the pumps and the new aqueduct, by 1673 Paris, with an estimated population of 500,000 people, had 16 fountains on the Right bank fed by aqueducts, 14 fountains on the Left Bank fed by the new Aqueduct of Arcueil, and twenty one new fountains along the Right and Left banks of the river, fed by the new hydraulic pumps.[4]
Of the fountains built in the 16th and 17th century, all were either rebuilt or demolished in the following two centuries. Only a few, such as the Fontaine Boucherat, the Fontaine des Innocents and Medici Fountain, all extensively rebuilt, still preserve the character of their time.
