La última definición , creo que en 1983 es :Distancia atravesada por la luz en el vacío en ¹/_299792458 partes de un segundo (17º CGPM ).

Siempre se ha estudiado como lo que medía un metro patrón de platino e iridio depositado en la Oficina Internacional de Pesos y Medidas (París).
