Fue el cuarto monarca de la dinastía Tudor; recordada por abrogar las reformas religiosas introducidas por Enrique VIII y someter de nuevo a Inglaterra a la disciplina papal el 30 de noviembre de 1554 con el apoyo del Cardenal Reginald Pole. En dicho proceso, condenó a casi 300 religiosos disidentes a morir en la hoguera en las Persecuciones Marianas, ganándose el apodo de "Bloody Mary" o "María la sangrienta
