El peor rechazo

No hay nada que golpee tan profundamente a alguien como el rechazo. El saber que alguien nos considera indignos, desagradables o incompetentes, afecta la percepción que tenemos de nuestro propio valor. Un trabajo reprobado o la pérdida de un empleo, son cosas que contaminan el paisaje de nuestras vidas. Felizmente, la mayoría de nosotros podemos manejar esta clase de situaciones, aunque la experiencia no es nada agradable.
La Biblia habla de una clase diferente de rechazo, que es otro asunto completamente diferente. Es difícil concebir el terror final que experimentarán quienes rechazan la amorosa oferta de salvación de Dios. Oirán estas tres palabras viniendo de la boca del Señor Jesús: “Apartaos de mí”. El Señor dice estas palabras más de una vez en los Evangelios para anunciar el juicio final de los desobedientes. Estas personas encontrarán su destino en la agonía de la separación eterna de Dios.
Muchas personas han tenido dificultad para aceptar la clara severidad de las palabras de Jesús. No reconocen que este rechazo final es, en realidad, la respuesta apropiada a la negativa del incrédulo de recibir la solución del Señor en cuanto al problema del pecado de la humanidad. Sí, este rechazo es el final del camino, un camino pavimentado con toda una vida de decisiones que dejaron a Dios fuera.
Cada decisión de actuar de modo independiente, es una decisión de aceptar el veredicto final del Salvador. O, como lo expresó G. K. Chesterton: “El infierno es el gran cumplido de Dios a la realidad de la libertad humana, y a la dignidad de la elección humana”. |

La recompensa del creyente

El objetivo que Dios nos ha dado es que glorifiquemos a nuestro Padre celestial. Efesios 2.10 arroja luz en cuanto al medio de lograrlo: “Porque somos hechura suya, creados en Cristo Jesús para buenas obras”.
Como creyentes, somos responsables de hacer la obra del Señor. Un día estaremos ante el tribunal de Cristo para rendir cuenta de nuestro servicio. “Tribunal” puede ser una palabra intimidante. Pero recuerde que Jesús nos redimió por su muerte y resurrección, y pagó la pena por nuestros pecados. Él recibió nuestro castigo, y ya no enfrentamos la condenación (Ro 8.1). El tribunal de Cristo será para recibir la recompensa que Él le dará a cada creyente.
En esa evaluación, Dios someterá a prueba nuestras acciones. El pasaje de hoy compara esto con probar la calidad de una sustancia por medio del fuego (1 Co 3.12-15). Después de que el fuego consuma los motivos impuros y las tareas sin valor, el Señor dará la recompensa por lo que haya quedado.
Desde afuera, puede parecer que tenemos una vida de obediencia, esforzándonos por honrar al Señor Jesús. Muchas tareas parecen abnegadas y estimables, pero debajo de su noble apariencia no tienen la motivación correcta. Puesto que nuestro deseo debe ser agradar a Cristo, podemos pedirle que purifique y cambie nuestro corazón.
¿Cuánto tiempo y energía invirtió sirviendo a Cristo para gloria de Él esta semana? Esto puede incluir cualquier tarea, no solo los esfuerzos relacionados con la iglesia. Pídale a Dios que le indique si usted actúa con alguna motivación egoísta que necesita ser puesta bajo la autoridad de Él. |

Del fracaso a la restauración

A veces, una situación difícil puede hacernos desear huir. A menos que mantengamos los ojos fijos en Cristo y nuestra confianza anclada en la Palabra de Dios, la desesperación por encontrar alivio nos tentará a tomar el asunto en nuestras propias manos. Eso fue lo que hizo Onésimo. Era uno de los millones de esclavos que había en el Imperio romano, y llegó el día en que decidió que ya estaba harto. Pero no solo huyó, sino que también robó a su amo.
Aunque Onésimo pensó que estaba trazando su propio curso huyendo a Roma, Dios dirigió su camino hacia el apóstol Pablo, quien lo condujo a Cristo. En su intento por liberarse, Onésimo descubrió la alegría de convertirse en un devoto siervo de Cristo. Ahora Jesús era su Maestro y su Señor, y eso significaba que tenía que corregir su falta y regresar a su amo terrenal. Puesto que los esclavos fugitivos enfrentaban la pena de muerte, Pablo intercedió en su favor con una carta a su amo Filemón, un creyente que, al parecer, él había conducido a la fe.
Hasta cierto punto de su vida, Onésimo no había cumplido con su nombre, que significa “útil” o “provechoso” (vea Fil 1.11). Pero Cristo cambió su vida, y lo convirtió en un “hermano amado” que sirvió a Pablo durante el encarcelamiento del apóstol (Fil 1.16).
La historia de Onésimo demuestra cómo trabaja la mano soberana de Dios, incluso cuando estamos decididos a ser nuestro propio amo. Una vez que nos arrepentimos y nos rendimos al Señor, Él redime nuestros fracasos y los usa para su gloria. Las cosas que recordamos con vergüenza ahora se convierten en ejemplos de la gracia y del poder de Dios para transformar vidas. |

God Accomplishes What Concerns You

David was a man who walked through trouble on a regular basis. His psalms express the struggles and disappointments he faced, yet in the end, he always turned his focus back to God. The key to his victorious attitude was his strong faith in the Lord.
David was confident in God's purpose. That's why he could say, "The Lord will accomplish what concerns me" (v. 8). The only way we can walk through trouble and not be defeated is by keeping our focus on the Lord and His purpose. He has promised to do a good work in our lives, but sometimes the only way He can complete it is in valleys of hardship.
He relied on the Lord's power. When troubles arise, we, too, can trust God to deliver us, but it may not be by escape. Sometimes He sustains us through the difficulty, walking with us every step of the way.
David believed the promises of God. Throughout these two verses, he repeatedly reminds himself what the Lord will do. We also need to have some specific promises from Scripture that will anchor us in times of trouble. The truths of the Bible are our most valuable possession when the storms of life assail us. Self-reliance or advice from others will never equal the help God's Word offers us.
God assumes responsibility for accomplishing what concerns you in times of trouble. Your job is to believe that He will fulfill His purpose, His power is adequate, and He'll keep every promise. When the trial has achieved His goal, He'll remove it. Until then, keep walking with your eyes on Him. |

Your Life Is Your Time

Our lives are governed by time. That's why we're surrounded by clocks and calendars that dictate our activities. As the minutes tick by, we wonder where the day went. When responsibilities and pressures mount, we complain, "I just don't have time to get it all done!" But the reality is that God has given us enough time to do exactly what He's planned for our lives. Perhaps the bigger issue is whether we are using our time to do our will or the Lord's.
Time is a gift from God, and He has allotted each of us a measure in which to live and accomplish His purposes. We have only two options—to spend it temporally on our own interests or invest it eternally. Since time can never be retrieved or reversed, it's critical that we make the most of every opportunity the Lord provides.
The key to investing in eternity is following God's plan for your life, not just filling your days with activities. Jesus was allocated just thirty-three years of life on earth, but only the last three were spent in fulfilling His Messianic ministry. To us that seems like a waste of time. Yet Christ accomplished everything His Father gave Him to do. That's why on the cross He could say, "It is finished" (John 19:30).
Scripture compares earthly life to "a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (James 4:14), but eternal life never ends. It's foolish to spend your life on a vapor when you can reap everlasting benefits by following God's will for your time here. Each day is an opportunity to choose. |

De lo común y lo corriente a la grandeza

Cualquiera que estudie el modus operandi de Dios, se da cuenta de que es muy diferente al de los hombres. La sabiduría del mundo dice que para alcanzar grandes logros se necesitan personas excepcionales y muchos recursos, pero el Señor elige a menudo lo pequeño e insignificante para lograr sus propósitos.
Por ejemplo, Cristo escogió como sus discípulos a un grupo de hombres comunes y corrientes, pero que “transformaron al mundo” después de ser llenos del Espíritu Santo. Durante su ministerio terrenal, Jesús alimentó a miles de personas con el almuerzo de un niño, y vio las dos pequeñas monedas de una viuda como una ofrenda superior a todas las demás (Jn 6.5-12; Lc 21.2, 3).
Dios es experto en el uso de personas que no parecen estar capacitadas para servirle. Moisés era un pastor de ovejas de 80 años de edad y tartamudo que liberó a una nación. Después de que Gedeón se escondía de sus enemigos, Dios lo convirtió en un valiente guerrero. David fue el menor de sus hermanos que pasó desapercibido, pero que mató a un gigante con una pequeña piedra y llegó a ser el rey más grande de Israel.
Dios no está buscando personas extraordinarias; Él quiere voluntarios que doblen obedientemente su rodilla. El ser común y corriente no le hace a usted inútil. Por el contrario, le permite ser una demostración del poder divino en su vida. Dios toma a las personas insignificantes y se deleita en hacerlas grandes.
¿Ha pensado usted alguna vez que su falta de capacidad, talento o habilidades es el escenario ideal para que Dios exhiba de manera admirable el poder y la gloria de Cristo? Si usted tiene la disposición de someterse a su dirección, Él hará grandes cosas en usted y por medio de usted. |

Obedience or Preference

Every believer must choose whether he will live by the principle of obedience or follow his preferences. When a person commits to doing the Lord’s will, then every situation and decision is sifted through the standard of "God said it, so I’m going to do it--and that’s the end of it." He may complain, weep, or try to argue. But in the end he will be obedient, no matter what.
I recall being invited years ago to interview with a church in Atlanta. During the entire road trip, I told the Lord that I didn’t want to move. I fussed and carried on a good while, but I knew Atlanta would be my new home. I didn’t like the idea, but the alternative was unimaginable: there are few things more unpleasant than living with the nagging anxiety that you missed out on something good.
The Lord certainly understands our need to question, cry out, and petition Him for the strength to do what He asks. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that we have a high priest who can sympathize with us. Jesus wasn’t excited or happy about the cross. He grieved over the coming separation from His Father. Nevertheless, He was committed to following God’s will (Matt. 26:39). No one took Christ’s life from Him; He laid it down (John 10:18).
Our lives are about fulfilling God’s purpose. Many people miss His awesome plan for them because they choose to follow their preferences. Obedience is sometimes hard, but the struggle and sacrifice are worth it. There is joy and peace for the believer who pleases the Lord and lives by His principles. |

Avoiding Compromise

Although the temptation to compromise threatens every believer, we don't have to give in. If we're aware of the danger and understand the downward progression and ultimate consequences, we can determine to be vigilant in obedience to the Lord.
The first step in learning how to avoid compromise is understanding why it is so tempting. When others pressure us to take part in in what we know God has forbidden, it's easy to give in because we don't want to feel rejected. But anyone who's committed to living a godly life must be willing to stand alone and face ridicule or even persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). At other times, we consent to activities that violate our conscience just to avoid conflict, but peace at any price means we have to sacrifice obedience to God.
However, the temptation to compromise doesn't always originate with others. In fact, James 1:14 says we are tempted when we're carried away by our own lusts. How many Christians have fallen into sexual immorality or pornography by desiring a second look? Greed is another motivation that drives us to compromise. If you fudge on your income tax or take a few things home from the office, you've stepped over the line of obedience to God. Our choices should be based on scriptural truth, not on our feelings and desires.
In order to stand firm against compromise, we must make God's Word the standard for our conduct. If you begin each day with the Lord in His Word, He will guide your way. Then when the Spirit gives a warning, obey immediately, because giving consideration to the temptation opens a door for Satan. |

El proceso del perdón

Perdonar a quienes nos han herido es una de las tareas más difíciles. El tener simplemente el deseo de obedecer a Dios, o de decir las palabras correctas, no cumple necesariamente la tarea. Los recuerdos y el dolor pueden permanecer en la mente, haciéndonos sentir que somos víctimas de una injusticia y despertando ira en nosotros.
Aunque tenemos la responsabilidad de tomar la iniciativa después de haber sido heridos, perdonar es un proceso. Hay que empezar de inmediato para evitar que se desarrolle una raíz de amargura. Pero recuerde que cuanto más profunda sea la herida, más tiempo necesitará para poder perdonar. Nunca se desanime, porque el Señor estará con usted en cada paso del camino.
Arrepentirse ante Dios es el inicio del proceso. Venga ante Él, confesando cualquier resentimiento y reconociéndolo como pecado. Al poner su ira y su dolor delante del Señor, permita que Él comience a sanar su corazón herido.
A veces, el proceso puede también implicar ir a la persona que le ofendió, y confesarle su actitud pecaminosa hacia ella. Este es un momento, no para acusar o detallar las faltas de la otra persona, sino simplemente para reconocer las suyas. Aunque la falta cometida contra usted puede parecer mayor que su actitud de no perdonar a la otra persona, evite la tentación de “jerarquizar” las faltas. Deje el juicio a Dios.
El perdón da libertad de la turbación que acompaña el resentimiento. Al ocuparse del proceso, usted comenzará a ver con ojos de compasión a la persona que le hirió. Al final, podrá dar gracias a Dios por la oportunidad de aprender a perdonar y de vivir en su gracia abundante. |

Making Disciples

Scripture teaches us to tell others about Jesus Christ. And while sharing the gospel is awesome, it is simply not enough. We should continue to encourage and invest in new believers. Many don't know where to begin reading in the Bible or how to spend time with their heavenly Father.
Of course, God takes each person's spiritual journey seriously, and He won't leave a seeking heart unsatisfied. At the same time, we have a responsibility to invest in the lives of spiritual brothers and sisters by sharing our understanding and experience.
This type of teaching is called discipleship, and it is both an honor and a great responsibility. As you commence this type of relationship, consider the following points.
First, make sure to continually spend time with the Lord so that you are growing and in tune with His Spirit. Second, be prepared with a plan. Your friend needs to understand the basics, such as how to read the Bible, what prayer is, and where to find fellowship. New believers will have questions--answers are important, as is your ability to find resources when you are unsure of how to reply. Third, help the individual understand generally what to expect as he embarks on his Christian walk. Tomorrow, we will explore the stages of a believer's journey.
Most of us learned, struggled, and learned some more till we began to understand the basics of life in Christ. Godly mentors can be a tremendous help. And remember, no matter how long we've believed, we never stop needing advice and encouragement from those farther along in the journey. |

Invertir para la eternidad

La vida cristiana es una vida activa dedicada a trabajar, servir, compartir y ayudar. Muchas veces pensamos que ser cristiano significa solo ir a la iglesia cada domingo por la mañana y ofrendar. Es un buen hábito, pero si esa es la totalidad de su vida cristiana, entonces debo decirle que está equivocado.
Jesucristo ha hecho el llamado a todos sus seguidores de ir al mundo y hacer discípulos, bautizarles y enseñarles. Usted dirá: “Bueno, eso es para los pastores y los misioneros”. No, no es así. Es, en realidad, la responsabilidad de todos los que invocan el nombre de Jesús.
Observe la primera palabra de Mateo 28.19. ¿Qué dice Jesús? Dice: “Id”. En palabras de hoy, está diciendo: “¡Salgan del sofá! ¡Apaguen el televisor! ¡Cierren la computadora! ¡Levántense, miren el mundo a su alrededor, y háblenle a alguien de Mí!”
No se trata de una sugerencia, ni tampoco es una palabra solo para un puñado de creyentes. Si usted ha sido salvado por la sangre de Cristo, ¡Jesús también le está hablando a usted!
Hacer discípulos no significa dejar el trabajo y convertirse en misionero a tiempo completo en un lugar remoto de la Tierra. Usted puede salir, tocar la puerta de su vecino y presentarle a Cristo. No necesita predicar sermones impresionantes a los demás, sino simplemente tener un corazón abierto y dispuesto a cumplir con el llamado que le ha sido hecho por Jesucristo.
¿Qué pudiera hacer usted ahora mismo para “ir y hacer discípulos”? Piense en las cosas que puede hacer hoy para responder al llamado de Dios a su vida. |

Our Growth as Christians

There's a goal to the Christian life, which God expresses this way: "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son" (Rom. 8:29). This refining process is called sanctification. And there are several identifiable stages en route to this goal, but sadly, most believers are unfamiliar with them. Let me offer some definitions so you can identify where you are on the journey and understand what to expect.
Salvation is the first stage of the Christian life. This describes our redemption from sinfulness through Jesus' atoning sacrifice. What results is forgiveness of sin, which lets us have a relationship with Almighty God.
Next, God gives us opportunity to serve (Eph. 2:10). We were created to do good works in Jesus' name.
But at some point, we notice something isn't working. This is the start to stage three: frustrated inadequacy. This unpleasant but necessary part of the journey can last varying amounts of time. Without it, we'd undoubtedly experience self-sufficiency and pride. But we should recognize this difficult phase as beautiful because it leads us into the best part of our spiritual lives: total dependency upon Jesus as Lord of our life. And we will be fulfilling our ultimate goal: becoming a reflection of Christ.
Sadly, many Christians don't reach a point of complete reliance on the Lord. Pride, discouragement, and distraction can ruin focus and perseverance. Paul reminds us to fix our eyes on the goal of maturity in Christ (Phil. 3:14). Learning to die to self is painful, but ironically, it's the only true way to life. |

Expresiones de la bondad de Dios

Imagínese que alguien le pregunta si Dios ha sido bueno con usted. ¿Qué es lo primero que le viene a la cabeza? ¿Piensa en cosas materiales como una casa o un automóvil? Esas cosas son excelentes, pero aunque no tenga ninguna señal externa de sus bendiciones, todavía puede decir que Dios ha sido bueno con usted.
La bondad de Dios se expresa por medio de su misericordia. Por lo general, hablamos de la misericordia del Señor en relación con su plan de salvación, que nos rescata de la esclavitud al pecado. Sin embargo, Dios también se interesa por nosotros cuando estamos sufriendo. El mendigo ciego Bartimeo clamó a Jesús por misericordia, y el Señor respondió sanando sus ojos (Mr 10.46-52). Nada en Bartimeo merecía misericordia, pero la naturaleza de Dios es responder a las necesidades de sus hijos amados.
La bondad de Dios se expresa por medio de su gracia. Ninguno de nosotros, no importa qué tan buen comportamiento tengamos, merece el favor de Dios. Sin embargo, puesto que no somos capaces de salvarnos a nosotros mismos, el Señor, en su bondad, tomó nuestra culpa y sufrió la pena de muerte en nuestro lugar. Al ser salvos, somos invitados a vivir por la gracia de Dios y, por tanto, a recibir constantemente su favor y su ayuda.
La bondad de Dios se expresa por medio de su amor. El Océano Pacífico, a pesar de su inmensidad, parece apenas una gota en comparación con el amor ilimitado del Señor. Ningún pecado que podamos cometer puede ponernos fuera del alcance de su amor.
¡Piense en todo lo que el Padre ha hecho por usted! Envió a su hijo Jesús a morir por sus pecados, y ahora le ofrece misericordia y gracia para vivir. |

Spiritually Shortsighted

In Luke 16, Jesus told a story about a rich man who lived for himself and ignored God. After death, he experienced the consequences of his choices--eternal separation from the Lord.
Jesus described him as one who lived in luxury every day (v. 19), providing for himself the best that money could buy but giving little to the poor at his gate. It is important to realize that this man wasn’t judged harshly by God because of his wealth. The heavenly Father is not opposed to our success. Nor was the man separated from the Lord because of his lack of charity toward others. He did not deliberately harm others but, rather, overlooked those in need and focused on himself.
The rich man’s mistake was that he prepared everything for the body but nothing for the soul. Our culture practices a similar style of living. Acquiring material riches and satisfying self is the primary pursuit of many in our world. Having what one wants seems to be the goal whether it’s a struggle to make ends meet or the bank account is overflowing.
Scripture says we were created to be in a relationship with the Father through faith in His Son. The rich man ignored God and paid the ultimate price. Our eternal destiny depends on our decision about Christ.
Despite what our culture thinks, life is not about us. It’s about having a relationship with the Lord. Whoever accepts Christ’s gift of salvation will live eternally with Him in heaven. Those who reject God will suffer. If you know any spiritually shortsighted people, pray that they will trust in Jesus. |

Un modelo de hospitalidad

Después de leer el pasaje de hoy, ¿puede nombrar al hombre a quien Juan dirigió esta carta? Sería conveniente que tengamos en cuenta a Gayo, porque Juan lo describe como un anciano amado que andaba en la verdad, que actuaba fielmente en lo que hacía, y que amaba a los desconocidos que visitaban la iglesia.
Aunque esta carta fue escrita a Gayo alrededor del 90 d. C., la primera mención de él en la Biblia aparece más de 30 años antes, durante el tercer viaje misionero de Pablo. Era originario de Derbe, en Asia Menor, una ciudad que Pablo visitó en sus dos primeros viajes. Al parecer, Gayo dejó su hogar para acompañar al apóstol en su último viaje; durante ese tiempo fue arrestado por la predicación de Pablo (Hch 19.28-32). También formó parte de un grupo de hombres que viajó con Pablo por Macedonia (Hch 20.4).
Puesto que Gayo era un nombre común, algunos estudiosos se preguntan si la Biblia se refiere a distintos hombres con ese nombre. Pero, de cualquier manera, su hospitalidad, su amor y su fiel servicio a la iglesia son dignos de mención. En Corinto, Gayo sirvió como anfitrión de Pablo, pero también de toda la iglesia (Ro 16.23). Y seguía practicando la hospitalidad y sirviendo como anciano cuando Juan le escribió varias décadas más tarde.
La hospitalidad no es exclusiva de aquellos que les resulta fácil. Romanos 12.9-21 contiene una larga lista de instrucciones que se aplican a todos los creyentes; y entre ellos hay admoniciones de ayudar en las necesidades de los santos y de practicar la hospitalidad (Ro 12.13). How to Foster True Friendships

All people long to be in genuine relationships. God created us with this need, as we were not meant to live in isolation.
Our world is so driven by technology that many people today try to ease their loneliness through computer relationships. However, this can never satisfy or compare to the human fellowship that the Creator designed. But healthy friendships don't just happen. They require intentional effort.
Yesterday, in looking to Jonathan and David for a biblical model of godly companions, we saw how mutual respect is vital in a healthy friendship. Now, let's look at two more aspects of their relationship. These two men had an emotional love for one another; their hearts were knit together (1 Sam. 18:1). When one man experienced joy or sadness, the other man felt it too.
They also had genuine devotion to each other, which is a type of commitment that involves giving: to show loyalty, Jonathan gave his friend material items--his robe and weapon. But these two men also selflessly offered more: Jonathan even risked his life and future kingship in order to save David from execution. Notice, too, that Jonathan was often the initiator, and the one who gave more. He was a prince, whereas David was a lowly shepherd. Social status shouldn't interfere with cultivating a true friendship.
We were designed for true companionship based on mutual respect, genuine love, and commitment. This requires not only time and selfless devotion but also transparency--which means being real, even about our faults. Taking such a risk requires trust. Such relationships are well worth the effort. |
