M.S: El valor de Alfa es 1, mientras el de Omega es 800. Sumados dan 801, un «anagrama» de 1080, y número que suma «peristera», la palabra griega que significa «paloma», símbolo del Espíritu Santo. Magdalene's Lost Legacy Symbolic Numbers & Sacred Union

There is a new Madonna in the Western world, and her name is Mary Magdalene. She is, it appears, the patroness of the people whom Episcopal bishop John Shelby Spong calls "believers in exile." To her new advocates, she is herself the archetype of the "Bride in Exile," the feminine principle denied and suppressed by a patriarchal church desperately out of touch with women and their emotional lives.
Long regarded by the mainstream churches as a penitent prostitute, the figure Mary Magdalene is now being "resurrected" from that status by numerous writers, each with a different concept of her significance. In the general upsurge of interest around Mary Magdalene, the question of her possible marriage to Jesus of Nazareth has feverishly captured the popular imagination of the English-speaking world, firing an intense debate in the North American mass media in 2003 that continues this year.
Dan Brown’s best-selling thriller, The Da Vinci Code, of course, has been the principle vehicle for conveying this idea, with over 4.5 million copies in print. In addition, much homage has been recently paid to (and scorn once again heaped upon) Henry Lincoln, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, the authors of the earlier best-seller, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, for first broaching to a mass readership, over 20 years ago, the idea of a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
Over the past 20 years, there has been a feminist revolution in Biblical scholarship, led in many ways by the pioneering work of Elaine Pagels, whose The Gnostic Gospels made the teachings of the Nag Hammadi manuscripts known to a new generation of lay readers. In concluding her chapter "God the Father/God the Mother" in that work, Pagels wrote: "The Nag Hammadi sources, discovered at a time of contemporary social crises concerning sexual roles, challenge us to reinterpret history – and to re-evaluate the present situation."
In Pagel’s footsteps have followed distinguished feminist scholars such as Karen King of Harvard and Jane Schaberg of the University of Detroit Mercy, among others, who have re-evaluated sexual roles in Christianity through advancing the concept of Mary Magdalene as a person of considerable stature, power and authority in the early church.
Yet it is Margaret Starbird, an independent scholar and theologian with deep Roman Catholic roots, who has emerged as the most recognised advocate for the heretical idea of a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. That marriage, she asserts, was a model of sacred partnership, and a template for the union of male and female energies in the human soul as well as in our personal relationships.
Starbird has developed her position in three books: The Woman with the Alabaster Jar, The Goddess in the Gospels (her spiritual autobiography) and, most recently, Magdalene’s Lost Legacy: Symbolic Number and Sacred Union in Christianity.
In Magdalene’s Lost Legacy, Starbird formally argues that the authors of the New Testament regarded Mary Magdalene as having the status of "sacred partner" with Jesus because of the symbolic numerical value of her epithet "the Magdalene." Starbird says the meaning of "the Magdalene" is derived not from her supposed hometown of Magdala, a fishing village on the shores of Lake Kinnaret (which received its name from early Christians), but from the Hebrew word magdala (migdol) which means "tower-stronghold" or "elevated."
Her overall argument is based upon the "sacred canon of number" - the ancient, Pythagorean idea that harmony in human relationships depended upon the recognition of balance and proportion in all things - a philosophy which is encoded into books of the Jewish bible and the New Testament. Among contemporary feminist authors presently writing on the subject of Mary Magdalene, Starbird is the first to utilise the technique known as gematria (from the Greek root word for geometry) to analyse and interpret Christian scriptures in support of the idea of a sacred partnership, a marriage, between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
As Starbird clearly defines it in her most recent book, Gematria is a long-honored and well honed literary device employed to enhance the subtle meaning of certain verses and phrases and possibly used as a mnemonic device as well. It required a deliberate manipulation of letters and words, similar to the rhyme scheme of a poem but more sophisticated. Instead of setting their verses to music, the authors of the sacred texts set them to number.
In Greek, in which the New Testament was written, as earlier had been done in Hebrew and later even in the Roman alphabet, every letter was given a numerical value. By adding together the numerical values of the letters in a name, verse or epithet (such as "the Magdalene"), the reader is able to obtain the symbolic value of that phrase. Phrases and words in both the Jewish bible and the New Testament that share the same value thereby become linked in their significance and must be taken into account, in this ancient but now academically ignored way of explicating the meaning of sacred texts.
In constructing her arguments, Starbird gives full credit to the authors who laid their foundation. She particularly acknowledges John Michell, the author of over 20 books exploring themes of high civilisations in antiquity and the esoteric dimensions of "duodecimal philosophy," or systems of meaning based upon the number 12. He is perhaps best known for his classic work The View Over Atlantis, which outlined the relationship between the great megalithic centres of Britain and the "ley line" system of telluric currents that, he suggested, linked them in an energy grid for the benefit of nature and humanity. Michell is also noted for his many years editing The Cereologist, the first serious periodical concerning crop circles.
Michell’s book City of Revelation has provided for Starbird the basis of her arguments in Magdalene’s Lost Legacy, as she clearly recognises. She also credits the importance of the work of David Fideler, whose Jesus Christ, Sun of God is also a milestone in explicating the development of Pythagorean number mysticism in Hellenistic culture and its role in the creation of specific passages of the Gospels.
Michell attaches particularly great importance to the number 153, which, according to chapter 21 of the Gospel of John, is the number of the fishes the disciples caught in their net when fishing on the sea of Galilee. Both Michell and Starbird point out that the number for one of the Greek words for "fishes" is 1224, which is the product of 153 x 8 – eight being the number of regeneration. In addition, the Greek word for "net" has a value of 1224. Moreover, the Greek phrase "multitude of fishes" has the value of 153 x 16 – a doubling of the previous factor of eight. Michell’s interpretation of these numbers, with which Starbird agrees, is that the "multitude of fishes" refers to "the harvest of humanity," or, in Christian terms, the ekklesia, the "Bride of Christ," all those who are converted to the path of Jesus.
Mathematically, 153 is also related to the square root of 3, which before the use of the radical sign in mathematics was expressed by the ratio of 265 to 153. That ratio is geometrically derived from the pattern commonly known as the vesica piscis (the "fish’s bladder"), and is formed by the intersection of two circles of equal radii whose circumferences pass through each other’s centres. The central shape formed by the intersection of the two circles is at once a symbolic vulva, and also the source of the "fish" symbol utilised by Christians since antiquity to identify themselves. If one draws a cross from the centre of that symbol to obtain the horizontal and vertical axes of the diagram, the ratio of those lines to one another is 265 over 153 – the square root of 3.
David Fidler expanded upon Michell’s discovery of the importance of 153 in Jesus Christ, Sun of God, noting that the square root of 3 is the governing ratio of a complex and beautiful diagram which he describes as "the cosmic ‘fish net’." As he puts it, "To the early Christian Gnostics the net was an important cosmological symbol, but this natural symbolism predates Christianity and represents the woven web of nature or the vivifying power of harmony which enforms (sic) the pattern of creation."
Starbird said that she met John Michell at a conference of the Fortean Society in 1993 and asked him if he had ever considered what might be the gematria of "the Magdalene." "He replied that no, he had not," Starbird said, "but then looked at me and said ‘Maybe that’s your job!’"
The number value of "the Magdalene" that Starbird obtained by gematria from the Greek, she states, is none other than the significant 153, the number of the Hellenistic "net," and the number of vesica piscis, the "fish’s bladder," long identified exclusively with Jesus. The sacred form of the two intersecting circles and their unique generative properties had been known since antiquity, and Michell argues it is represented in the design of Stonehenge, as well as in the floor plans of the great Gothic cathedrals.
Starbird is both modest and critical of conventional attitudes in her assessment of her contribution.
"The only really original contribution I made was to check out the number for Mary Magdalene and to realise her connection with the whole ‘153’ gematria and sacred geometry, which I feel was overlooked by the men because they never gave her the time of day (since she was a ‘prostitute’)," she said.
"For me, the ‘sacred marriage’ is the ‘pearl of great price hidden in the field,’ a metaphor for the kingdom of God. No one ever thought to look for it – since they didn’t realise it was missing!"
Michell recalled his original meeting and, having read her arguments concerning a possible marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, told this writer in a telephone interview from his home in London that "her arguments are highly plausible, and it is a delight to see someone take one’s work and expand upon it for a good purpose."
Michell added he concurs that Starbird’s association of Mary Magdalene with "153" and the vesica piscis, is her own unique and original contribution to the growing debate over the identity and significance of Mary Magdalene.
As the joining together of two circles of equal radii, creating a third intersecting area that is symbolic of the vulva and the womb, the vesica piscis is one of the fundamental symbols of sacred geometry, and the origin, as well, of the Tree of Life of the Kabbala.
Simone Weil, the remarkable 20th century philosopher/social worker, in her extraordinary meditations on the meaning of Pythagorean number mysticism, wrote this passage, which Gordon Strachan quotes in his own book, Jesus the Master Builder:
It is impossible that the disposition or arrangement of two of anything, so long as there are only two, should be beautiful without a third. There must come between them, in the middle, a bond which brings them into union. The most beautiful of bonds is that which brings perfect unity to itself and the parts linked. It is geometrical proportion which, by essence, is the most beautiful for such achievement.
This concept of the beauty in perfect proportion is fundamental to Pythagorean number mysticism, and appears to have been completely embraced by the authors of the New Testament. At the heart of Starbird’s arguments concerning the relationship of Mary Magdalene and Jesus lies her assertion they created a beautiful model of sacred partnership – a "bond that brings them into union" – that was to have been the birthright of humanity. As she put it in my feature profile of her for the National Catholic Reporter in 2003, that birthright was "hijacked" by a male dominated church until the present time.
Sacred partnership, to Starbird, is much more than equality of the sexes in domestic and professional terms. She says the incarnation of Jesus is not correctly understood as the imposition of an exclusively male son of God as king of the Earth, but rather his life showed he was here to demonstrate that wisdom is the result of the balancing of opposites, in human terms of male and female energies.
Mary Magdalene, therefore, was much more than a "Mrs. Jesus," in Starbird’s arguments. As Jesus’ royal consort, she was his partner in the sacred enterprise of his ministry as well as his beloved. That the church could not accept this role for her, and that she was cast in the role of penitent prostitute, is to Starbird not merely a tragedy, but directly linked to the sexual scandals now plaguing the Roman Catholic Church, and to the wasting of the natural world, the global ecological crisis brought on by centuries of denigrating the female.
To completely "round out" her argument, Starbird delves even deeper into Michell’s City of Revelation to explicate his interpretation of the Book of Revelation.
As is widely known, the number 666 has now been appropriated by evangelical Christians as not only the "number of the Beast," but the number of Satan, the devil, the fallen angel. As Starbird points out, however, John Michell has explained the significance of 666 as the number routinely used in ancient texts to refer to the power of the Sun in its symbolic role as the male, procreative force of the universe.
The number 666 is obtained through constructing the "magic square" of the Sun, in which the numbers 1 through 36 are arranged in a box of six rows of six numbers each. Each line (vertical, diagonal and horizontal, from corner to corner) adds up to 111, and the sum of the entire box is 666.
Michell also points out, Starbird says, that the complementary number to 666 is 1080, the number of the Moon, and these two numbers take on a dynamic meaning in Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed: "The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, which a farmer sowed in his garden. Although it is the smallest of seeds it grew into a tree with great branches and the birds came to nest in it." (Mark 4:30-32)
The phase "the grain of mustard seed" in Greek has the value of 1746, which is the sum of 666 (the male force) and 1080 (the feminine principle), pointing to the union of opposites – within oneself and within society – as inherently involved in the process of coming into relationship with the Divine, what Jesus called the Kingdom of Heaven.
"Jesus was really the first feminist," Starbird says. "He came to liberate women from a social tradition in his times in which they were completely subjugated to men, and in doing so, he wanted to create a condition of harmony and balance."
To lay even more firmly the foundation for that argument, Starbird utilises Michell’s interpretation of the Book of Revelation as a critique of unbalanced, unchecked solar power – 666 out of relationship with 1080 through the deification of Jesus as a celestial god.
As she put it in Magdalene’s Lost Legacy:
The prophetic warning at the heart of the Apocalypse insists that the raising of the human Jesus to an image of cultic worship, as an image of an all-powerful and wrathful God of Justice, Power and Might, is itself a deification of the solar 666, the male power principle: ‘This calls for wisdom. If anyone has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666’ (Rev. 13:18). John Michell added up the gematria of the phrase ‘and his number is 666’ and discovered that the sum of the letters is 2368, the same sum as the Greek letters for the name of the man in question – ‘Jesus Christ.’
Clearly, both Michell and Starbird have given mainstream Christian theologians plenty to consider, particularly as popular interest in apocalyptic scenarios has never been higher.
So far, the academic theological community has tended to ignore Starbird’s formal arguments in Magdalene’s Lost Legacy, just as they did with Michell’s earlier City of Revelation and his related work The Dimensions of Paradise. Perhaps some dialogue may be stimulated in the future by feminists attracted to Pythagorean philosophy, as Simone Weil was.
In the interim, though, Starbird’s work has attracted an appreciative reader and commentator in the person of Lesa Bellevie, who runs the website www.magdalene.org, by far the most comprehensive source of information on the many facets of Mary Magdalene and the emerging spiritual/cultural movement coalescing around her figure.
In 1992, Bellevie gave a talk entitled "Brides In Exile: A Primordial Religious Impulse Latent in Western Civilisation" to the Seattle Pagan Scholars, in which she provided a remarkable overview of the current spectrum of scholarship and speculation concerning Mary Magdalene. At the conclusion of her talk, Bellevie had the following observation to make, which is an apt summation of the current state of considerations concerning Mary Magdalene, Jesus and the concept of "sacred union":
The concept of sacred union is one that affects a variety of religions, particularly those of Abrahamic origin…. With that in mind, I think that ‘the bride in exile’ is an archetypal expression of our sense of being apart from the divine, however we conceive of it.
To make an absolutely unscholarly statement, I think that the rejuvenation of goddess-oriented and earth-centred religion, as well as the awakening of Mary Magdalene in the collective awareness, is indicative of the divine yearning toward union within us. The modern pagan and magical culture is much more receptive to the idea of balance and the reconciliation of powers than the followers of Abrahamic religions, and in this regard, I think we’re leading the way in what could be some very powerful spiritual movements.

En los textos griegos el número 666 es expresado mediante las letras, cxV’ o 600, 60, 6. La calidad profética de esas palabras ha excitado la imaginación de los lectores de todas épocas. El significado que transportan no es fácil de entender, ya que el lenguaje místico de la numerología ha permanecido aletargado mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, a través de las investigaciones sobre el canon del Templo es posible adquirir algún conocimiento de su vocabulario y gramática.
666 es un número de energía positiva, que emana del núcleo a los satélites. El 6 es el número de la creación física, del cosmos, y el 666, la trinidad de seises, representa el lado activo de este número al ser el 3 el primer símbolo numérico de la energía positiva. Como fuerza elemental, el 666 representa el sol y la influencia de la radiación solar. Es el poder generador del varón, la fecundación, la forma modificadora de la materia, el yang de los orientales. Cada situación en la natjraleza contiene de algún modo el 666 por cuanto expresa el lado activo y dinámico del proceso.
La fuerza del número 666 es expresada por los chinos con el símbolo del dragón, contenido en el primer hexagrama del I Ching. Para los habituados a la cultura que pone en contacto directo el hombre con el cosmos, esta figura debía resultarles sospechosa, tanto más para la iglesia, modelada según las convenciones romanas de la fórmula y la jerarquización. Por ello, si bien en principio el dragón oriental no es más que el equivalente de la “bestia” anunciada en el Apocalipsis, las dos figuras han divergido ampliamente en el desarrollo de la segunda en el seno de la cultura cristiana. La bestia pasó a ser considerada sólo en sus poderes maléficos, y el 666 llegó a ser excluido y asociado a los poderes infernales, al demonio en suma. De ser un principio vital, fecundador y activo pasó a representar el mal, la perversidad y, paradójicamente en una cultura que condenaba las supersticiones, un símbolo de mal agüero.
Observemos la presencia del 6 y su múltiplo el 12 en las siguientes medidas atronómicas, expresadas en unidades más “naturales” que las métricas:
Diámetro del Sol: 864.000 millas (12 ´ 12 ´ 6000)
Diámetro de la Luna: 2160 millas (6 ´ 6 ´ 60)
Diámetro de la Tierra: 7920 millas (12 ´ 660)

El 666 ha sido relacionado abundantemente con la Ciudad Santa descrita por san Juan en su Revelación o Apocalipsis. En el plano descrito por el mismo autor (Cap. 25), el perímetro cuadrado de la Nueva Jerusalén es 6 millas, y la circunferencia del círculo que contiene dicho cuadrado es 6,666 millas. El área de este círculo es 33.300.000 codos cuadrados, y el área del círculo más reducido contenido en el cuadrado es 6.660.000 YM2. Combinando más círculos y cuadrados los expertos en metrología antigua han obtenido la cifra 666 en centenares de ocasiones.
No es ocioso señalar aquí que el correlato el 666 es el 1080, número lunar, asociado a la recepción de energía y al yin (¡ambos números relacionados en proporción áurea!). La suma de ambos es el 1746, y los dos tienen respectivas numerologías extensas y ricas, difícilmente estudiables por separado, por lo que la centralización de los estudios cristianos en el 666 queda forzosamente incompleta si no se le ve formando parte de un sistema más amplio en el que figuran los otros dos números en un papel igualmente destacado. Igualmente importante en el sistema es el 2368, el número de Jesucristo, contenido en las palabras kai o ariqmoV autou cxV’, “y su número es seiscientos sesenta y seis”, que, computada completa, da precisamente un valor de 2368... Por tanto, el hombre aludido por san Juan sería el mismo Jesucristo, principio activo, que “no vino a traer paz sino espada” (Mt 10-34).

A.F: Con la ayuda de la Gematria ha podido descifrar aspectos oscuros del Apocalipsis. ¿Puede aclararnos su interpretación del conocido verso «Yo soy el Alfa y el Omega»? M.S: El valor de Alfa es 1, mientras el de Omega es 800. Sumados dan 801, un «anagrama» de 1080, y número que suma «peristera», la palabra griega que significa «paloma», símbolo del Espíritu Santo. El número 1080, además, es la Gematria tanto del Espíritu Santo como del Espíritu de la Tierra (el aspecto «femenino» o «inmanente» de lo divino). Las letras del alfabeto, desde Alfa a Omega, contienen todas las posibles permutaciones y combinaciones de la «Palabra de Dios». La letra A ( el uno) representa el principio creativo masculino, mientras el Omega tiene la forma de un útero.

En los textos griegos el número 666 es expresado mediante las letras, cxV’ o 600, 60, 6. La calidad profética de esas palabras ha excitado la imaginación de los lectores de todas épocas. El significado que transportan no es fácil de entender, ya que el lenguaje místico de la numerología ha permanecido aletargado mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, a través de las investigaciones sobre el canon del Templo es posible adquirir algún conocimiento de su vocabulario y gramática.
666 es un número de energía positiva, que emana del núcleo a los satélites. El 6 es el número de la creación física, del cosmos, y el 666, la trinidad de seises, representa el lado activo de este número al ser el 3 el primer símbolo numérico de la energía positiva. Como fuerza elemental, el 666 representa el sol y la influencia de la radiación solar. Es el poder generador del varón, la fecundación, la forma modificadora de la materia, el yang de los orientales. Cada situación en la natjraleza contiene de algún modo el 666 por cuanto expresa el lado activo y dinámico del proceso.
La fuerza del número 666 es expresada por los chinos con el símbolo del dragón, contenido en el primer hexagrama del I Ching. Para los habituados a la cultura que pone en contacto directo el hombre con el cosmos, esta figura debía resultarles sospechosa, tanto más para la iglesia, modelada según las convenciones romanas de la fórmula y la jerarquización. Por ello, si bien en principio el dragón oriental no es más que el equivalente de la “bestia” anunciada en el Apocalipsis, las dos figuras han divergido ampliamente en el desarrollo de la segunda en el seno de la cultura cristiana. La bestia pasó a ser considerada sólo en sus poderes maléficos, y el 666 llegó a ser excluido y asociado a los poderes infernales, al demonio en suma. De ser un principio vital, fecundador y activo pasó a representar el mal, la perversidad y, paradójicamente en una cultura que condenaba las supersticiones, un símbolo de mal agüero.
Observemos la presencia del 6 y su múltiplo el 12 en las siguientes medidas atronómicas, expresadas en unidades más “naturales” que las métricas:

El 666 ha sido relacionado abundantemente con la Ciudad Santa descrita por san Juan en su Revelación o Apocalipsis. En el plano descrito por el mismo autor (Cap. 25), el perímetro cuadrado de la Nueva Jerusalén es 6 millas, y la circunferencia del círculo que contiene dicho cuadrado es 6,666 millas. El área de este círculo es 33.300.000 codos cuadrados, y el área del círculo más reducido contenido en el cuadrado es 6.660.000 YM2. Combinando más círculos y cuadrados los expertos en metrología antigua han obtenido la cifra 666 en centenares de ocasiones.
No es ocioso señalar aquí que el correlato el 666 es el 1080, número lunar, asociado a la recepción de energía y al yin (¡ambos números relacionados en proporción áurea!). La suma de ambos es el 1746, y los dos tienen respectivas numerologías extensas y ricas, difícilmente estudiables por separado, por lo que la centralización de los estudios cristianos en el 666 queda forzosamente incompleta si no se le ve formando parte de un sistema más amplio en el que figuran los otros dos números en un papel igualmente destacado. Igualmente importante en el sistema es el 2368, el número de Jesucristo, contenido en las palabras kai o ariqmoV autou cxV’, “y su número es seiscientos sesenta y seis”, que, computada completa, da precisamente un valor de 2368... Por tanto, el hombre aludido por san Juan sería el mismo Jesucristo, principio activo, que “no vino a traer paz sino espada” (Mt 10-34).
The Golden Ratio, 1.618033989, is at the basis of stock-market data, petal patterns of flowers, and even the planet periods. It is the ratio obtained by dividing consecutive elements, the larger by the smaller, of the Fibonacci series: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21... where the next term is the sum of the preceding two terms. The Golden Ratio is the solution to the equation x = 1 + 1/x. When raised to the powers -3, -1, 0, 1, 5, 7, the Golden Ratio gives the periods of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn in years, suggesting that the solar system must be viewed as a single whole.
For the physicist, the number 137, the inverse of the fine structure constant, is more mysterious. It is a dimensionless ratio that equals the product of the Planck's constant and the speed of light divided by the square of the electron's charge. Actually, the number is slightly larger (137.0359895), but it is sufficiently close to the integer 137 that people have wondered if it is related to some deep property of nature. This number shows up at many places in atomic physics, and it has been even seen in the motions of Jupiter's satellites. Some of the greatest minds of the physics of the last century have sought formulae for it. One theorist considered it particularly significant that 137 equals 128+8+1, each of which factor is a power of 2.
A less esoteric and more interesting number is 108, the number of beads of a rosary and of many other things in Indian cosmology. I first heard of it in the title of swamis in India, as in Shri 108 so-and-so, which irked me not only because of its pretentiousness but also because no one seemed to know why it was 'holy'. I also had heard of 1,008, another equally mysterious number used by swamis.
Much, much later, I asked professors about these numbers. One gentleman told me that its secret lay in the 'holiness' of the number 18, as evidenced by the eighteen Puranas, and the eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita; and the number 108 was obtained from 18 by slipping a zero in between, and doing this again led to 1,008. But this explanation didn't convince me. Why is 18 holy, to begin with? And if it is, why doesn't slipping a zero in between 1 and 8 destroy that holiness? If it doesn't for whatever reason, leading to 108 and 1,008 in two stages, why doesn't it lead to 10,008 and other larger numbers?
Another gentleman said that 108 was 27 times 4, that is 27 nakshatras (constellations in the moon's monthly circuit) multiplied by four of the four cardinal directions. But why should this be important? Also, in reality, the moon takes 27 and one-third days to complete its circuit, and not exactly 27.
I ultimately found the answer to the mystery of these numbers while researching early Indian astronomy. I discovered that the Indians took this to be the distance between the earth and the sun in sun-diameter units, and the distance between the earth and the moon in moon-diameter units.
Three facts that any book on astronomy will verify:
* Distance between earth and sun = 108 times sun-diameter,
* Distance between earth and moon = 108 times moon-diameter, and most remarkably,
* Diameter of the sun = 108 times the earth diameter.
That the Indians knew of the first two shouldn't surprise, because it can be calculated by anyone without the need for any instruments. Take a pole, mark its height, and then remove it to a place 108 times its height. The pole will look exactly of the same angular size as the moon or the sun.
I don't believe Indians knew the third fact, that the sun is 108 times as large as the earth, because there is no evidence of that in the old astronomy manuals. If they did, it would be as amazing a coincidence as the knowledge of the correct speed of light before modern measurements.
Indian thought takes the outer cosmology to be mirrored in the inner cosmology of the human. Therefore, the number 108 is also taken to represent the 'distance' from the body of the devotee to the God within. The chain of 108 'links' is held together by 107 joints, which is the number of marmas, or weak spots, of the body in Ayurveda.
We can understand that the 108 beads of the rosary (japamala) must map the steps between the body and the inner sun. The devotee, while saying beads, is making a symbolic journey from the physical body to the heavens.
The number 108 joined to the name is merely a boast that one is a spiritual adept, a master of the journey of 108 steps through the intermediate regions of danger.
The other number 1,008 has a slightly different basis. Early Indian astronomy divides the kalpa -- the total period within a creation, the day of Brahma, which is part of an infinite cycle -- into 1,008 yugas. The use of this number as a title is to boast that one knows the mystery of time from creation to annihilation.
The number 108 appears in many settings in the Indian tradition. The Natya Shastra of Bharata speaks of the 108 karanas -- combined movements of hand and feet -- of dance. A few months ago in Chennai, Padma Subramaniam, the great dancer and dance theorist, told me a story of discovery connected with this number.
In the 1960s, Padmaji had come to the realization that the four hands of the Shiva figures in Thanjavur represented animation. Then, in 1980, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal, the Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Peetham -- who was to pass away at the age of 100, fourteen years later -- asked her to design a fresh set of karana figures for the panels of the new Uttara Chidambaram Nataraja Mandir in Satara, Maharashtra, based on the Natya Shastra descriptions. Each panel had to show Shiva and Parvati.
She first had to decide whether to use Shiva with four arms as at Thanjavur or Shiva with two arms as at Kumbakonam, together with Parvati with two arms as at Chidambaram. She took pictures for advice to the Swamiji, but he said there was to be no copying of existing images. Ultimately, she chose four arms for Shiva and two for Parvati, and created the 108 new designs.
Later in the 1990s, Padmaji was approached by Alessandra Iyer, an Italian scholar, who wished to study the influence of the Natya Shastra on the Far East. They discovered that the Satara temple panels of Padmaji were similar in form to the 53 surviving dance panels of the 9th century Prambanam temple of Java, Indonesia, that was largely destroyed by earthquake in the 15th century.
This established that Padmaji's choices were right and her understanding of the four-armed poses as frozen movements was correct. Since her reconstruction were based on brief description, it also suggests that the karanas are archetypes of motion.
The idea of archetypes brings me to Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung who, in a book they wrote in 1952 called The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche, argued that our discoveries are a consequence of the preexisting patterns in our mind. Pauli wrote once, “I prefer to say that mind and matter are governed by common, neutral ordering principles 'that are not in themselves determinable'.” The idea of archetype, borrowed by Jung from Yoga, makes it possible for us to see how different people can come to the same discovery independently. Parenthetically, Jung took the idea of divinity as male-female (Harihara), suggesting that each man had a female within (anima), and each woman had a male within (animus).
In his contribution to the book, Pauli indicated how the great Kepler had come by his three laws of planetary motion upon the use of Fibonacci sequences. From there the next step was the Newtonian synthesis that viewed the universe as a machine. But now we have come full circle in our realization that if the universe is a machine, it is one where the components are all connected together -- it is a holistic machine.

As the curator of Magdalene.org, I read many books about Mary Magdalene. I've been aquainted with Margaret Starbird's books since her first title, "The Woman With The Alabaster Jar," but have had the impression that, more than anything, her writing expressed a very personal journey. That changes with her most recent book, however, in which she does a wonderful job of reminding the general reader of the origins of Christianity, the environment in which it developed, and how it's entirely possible that the initial message has been all but lost.
By far, the best parts of the book are the sections on history, but the gematria work presented is nothing to take lightly. In the same tradition of John Michell's "Dimensions of Paradise" and David Fideler's "Jesus Christ Sun of God," (both of which are referenced in this book), Starbird carefully applies the rules of Greek gematria to uncover coded messages in the New Testament. This is NOT "The Bible Code," which is based on a completely inappropriate system; this is a historically accurate use of number within words and phrases.
The biggest question about the gematria is this: was it INTENTIONALLY included in the words and phrases mentioned? Or is it all a big coincidence? Starbird believes that the numbers are intentional, and I have to agree that there appears to be a higher than usual degree of connection in the passages that match up. Regardless of the answer, there is more than enough material here to provide food for meditation and examination of what Christiantiy *should* be about.

In MAGDALENE'S LOST LEGACY, Margaret Starbird continues her exploration of the message of Mary the companion of Yeshua (Jesus) by examining the gematria of the canonical gospels and other books of the Bible's New Testament.
As every statistician knows, the Greek alphabet consists of symbols like "delta" and "pi" that also work as numbers. Starbird suggests that using Greek alphanumerics to encode relevant passages, early "heretical" Christians hid verboten material in otherwise inoffensive text. Irenaeus, a church father of the 4th century who ordered the destruction of Gnostic material (such as the books found at Nag Hammadi) knew of this practice and forbade it. However, the "heretics" did not listen to him, and they hid material about the Magdalene in the New Testament - in the synoptic gospels and the mysterious Book of Revelation. Starbird says modern computers have provided scholars the means to decode these arcane messages. (She provides a Greek key you can use to interpret passages in Greek included in the book).
Hidden numbers aside, Starbird poses a question asked by other scholars - why do specific numbers appear in the books of the Bible and do they matter. For example, why were 153 fishes caught in a net (John 21:11) or why were there x number of loaves and fishes? The Book of Revelations suggests the `beast' is 666. In gemetric code, 666 = the solar principle. Starbird suggests the solar principle without a lunar principle leads to a desert. Day without night or Sol alone = "raw abusive, power, the power of the tyrant" or the male element run amuck. When the male element is combined with the female (lunar or night =1080) they form 1746 the symbolic equivalent of "the grain of mustard seed" or "the kingdom of God within." The marriage of sol and luna or masculine and feminine (1746=union of opposites) is also the gematria for "Jerusalem the city of God."
This wonderful book continues Starbird's exploration of messages about the Magdalene hidden in plain sight for two millennium. And, don't miss the land of milk and honey (it has to do with sol and luna).

The historian Frances Yates interpreted Campanella's book as aiming for a return to the Egyptian religion as predicted in the Asclepius of the Hermetica. She cited a particular passage from Asclepius that may have relevance to the seed germ of ideas behind the founding of America:
The gods who exercise their dominion over the earth will be restored one day and installed in a City at the extreme limit of Egypt, a City which will be founded towards the setting sun, and into which hasten, by land and sea, the whole race of mortal men.

Heliopolis 707 must also be significant as the value of 'AVN', a Hebrew word which means 'On' or 'Heliopolis', the Egyptian city of the sun.
Why would they have been interested in this city? They may have been drawn to Campanella's Utopian vision of the future, Citta del Sole. Thomasso Campanella was a Hermetic magus who upset papal sensibilities and was tortured in the dungeons beneath the Vatican on several occasions. Citta del Sole, written in 1602, prefigured Francis Bacon's New Atlantis in emphasising the use of learning and science for the public good. The Number of Fusion 1746 is an extremely important symbol of harmony for esoteric initiates, as it represents the fusion of the solar number 666 and the lunar number 1080. On the Great Seal we find both components of this number united, because 'E Pluribus' has a value of 666 and 'Novus' 1080.
'Ordo Seclorum' has a value of 1369. This is suspicious as it is also the value of the letters giving the date MDCCLXXVI (1776 when counted as Roman numerals). 1369 is an important number for it represents 37 squared - and 37 is the keystone of sacred geometry in the Bible (and elsewhere). The fact that we have a square number at the base of the pyramid seems very fitting - a solid foundation.
The reason for this is that the words John used were, Και ο αριθμος αυτου Χξς΄ - 'And the number of his name is 666'. These critical words have a value of 2368: this number is unambiguous to the cabalist as the value ofΙησοθς Χριστος- Jesus Christ.
The Lightbringer The combined value of 'Annuit Coeptis' and 'Novus Ordo Seclorum' is 707 + 1742 = 2449. This is the precise value of the phraseΙησοθς Χριστος Νικα- Jesus Christ Conquers. In addition, it is almost certainly intended to signifyΟ Φωσφορος(2448) - The Lightbringer / The Morning Star. Pictorially, this is represented by the blazing triangle holding the eye in the pyramid. In scriptural terms it is highly unlikely that 'Lucifer' can be entirely evil for the Bible ends with these words of Jesus (Rev. 21,16):
I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

El simbolismo de la luna es muy complejo y amplio. En general representa el poder femenino, la Diosa Madre, la reina del cielo y la protección. Las fases de nacimiento, crecimiento y muerte de la luna simbolizan la inmortalidad y la eternidad, la renovación perpetua; iluminación. 4. Y mientras sembraba, parte de la semilla cayó junto al camino; y vinieron las aves y la comieron.

14. De manera que se cumple en ellos la profecía de Isaías, que dijo: De oído oiréis, y no entenderéis; Y viendo veréis, y no percibiréis.
15. Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha engrosado, Y con los oídos oyen pesadamente, Y han cerrado sus ojos; Para que no vean con los ojos, Y oigan con los oídos, Y con el corazón entiendan, Y se conviertan, Y yo los sane.
16. Pero bienaventurados vuestros ojos, porque ven; y vuestros oídos, porque oyen.

19. Cuando alguno oye la palabra del reino y no la entiende, viene el malo, y arrebata lo que fue sembrado en su corazón. Este es el que fue sembrado junto al camino.
20. Y el que fue sembrado en pedregales, éste es el que oye la palabra, y al momento la recibe con gozo;
21. pero no tiene raíz en sí, sino que es de corta duración, pues al venir la aflicción o la persecución por causa de la palabra, luego tropieza.
22. El que fue sembrado entre espinos, éste es el que oye la palabra, pero el afán de este siglo y el engaño de las riquezas ahogan la palabra, y se hace infructuosa.
23. Mas el que fue sembrado en buena tierra, éste es el que oye y entiende la palabra, y da fruto; y produce a ciento, a sesenta, y a treinta por uno.

El reino de los cielos es semejante a un hombre que sembró buena semilla en su campo

The Sirius Star System as the Source of Creation
Scientific, linguistic, and mythological evidence places the Sirius star system, Sirius A and Sirius B, at the origin of the creation.
Eastern and western mythological and religious traditions agree that a primal sound, a Word, is the origin of the creation. Quantum physics also agrees that vibration (sound) is the essence of all forms in the creation.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without him was not anything made that was made.” – Bible, John 1:1
The Rig Veda and the Vedic Sanskrit tradition revealed long ago that this primal sound, this Word of God, is AUM.
OM and AUM are the same. In Vedic Sanskrit, O is the vowel combination AU.
The acoustics and mythology of the Sirius Star System will reveal the truth concerning this Word of God.
All celestial objects, including Sirius A and B, are moving in helical spirals, and generate tones and sounds.
With the computer’s help, we can hear the perfect harmony generated by the orbital sounds of our own planetary system, the harmony of the spheres, as predicted by Johannes Kepler in the sixteenth century. Kepler said:
“. . . we should not be surprised that men have discovered the beautiful, effective succession of tones in the musical modes, when we see that in doing so, they are imitating God’s work by bringing down to earth the sounds of the celestial motions.”

The computer also allows us to transpose into audible range and hear the orbital sounds of atoms, and their sound combinations as molecules.
How is AUM generated by Sirius A and B, and how is it said correctly?
The three sounds and tones of AUM are generated by the individual orbits and double helical spiral shaped linear motion of Sirius A and B in the same way as the harmony of the orbital sounds of our planetary system, and happens in the following way.
1. The A is generated by Sirius B’s orbital motion, and is said like the a in America, uh, in the tone F. 2. The U is generated by Sirius A’s orbital motion, and is said like the u in tune in F#. 3. The M is generated by their combined double-helix linear motion, and is said in the tone G.
Their combined linear motion produces the nasalated M in the tone G, completing the three sounds and tones of AUM.
The picture below shows the actual orbits and double helical linear pathway of Sirius A and B, and how these motions generate the three sounds and tones of AUM.
Because the orbits and double helical linear motion of Sirius A and B produce the three sounds and tones of AUM in the F, F#, G, tritone, the question arises:
Why the F, F#, G, Tritone?
The F, F#, G, tritone is the fabled quintessence of the alchemists, who said that this sound accompanies all creative processes, including, of course, the creation of the universe. They are correct. AUM is the quintessential creative sound, the Word of God that was in the beginning.
The F, F#, G, tritone of AUM is the creative sound that accompanies the miracles of:
A. Creation: AUM is the fractal sound pattern of the Big Bang. B. Cell division (mitosis): when the DNA makes a copy of itself and checks it for errors. C. Photosynthesis: when light becomes living matter.
“The F, F#, G, forms the key tension in the nitrogen atom during photosynthesis when sunlight is transformed into chlorophyll, into living green. From sunshine grows living matter. The word made flesh.” Nada Brahma: The World is Sound: Music and the Landscape of Consciousness, p. 70
From the single DNA molecule we all once were, our entire organism has unfolded by way of the F, F#, G, tritone of AUM.
Saying AUM correctly in the creative tritone induces resonance in the soft palate in the roof of our mouth, and transfers this resonance to our pineal gland, which sits directly above the soft palate.
The specific resonance induced by saying AUM in the F, F#, G, tritone, causes our pineal gland to secrete dimethyltryptamine into our blood. Dimethyltryptamine is a powerful mind-manifesting, visionary, and meditative substance.
Our pineal gland is known as our third eye, and is recognized as a connecting point between our physical and spiritual being. This sound resonance connection to our pineal gland was designed into our DNA by the Creator.
By saying AUM in the F, F#, G, tritone, we are creating the fractal sound formula of our own DNA, and consciously activating our pineal gland (our third eye) using sound resonance.
The miraculous and creative F, F#, G, tritone of AUM is the only sound ever banned by the Catholic Church, who declared it to be the diablos en musica, the devil in music.
Because AUM cannot be said correctly without using the tritone, the Catholic Church has in effect banned the Word of God.
When contacted, Catholic Church authorities were unable to explain or offer any reason. In any case, they do not want us to say the Word of God, and access the visionary consciousness that was designed into our being by the Creator.
What other evidence shows AUM coming from Sirius?
The classic iconic imagery of Asia has always shown AUM radiating from the star Sirius.

The Sanskrit word tara, meaning star is one of the Goddess’ thousand names, and applies specifically to Sirius, the brightest star. Tara is synonymous with AUM.
The Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1899, defines ‘tara‘ as 1. the mystic syllable AUM, and 2. star or asterism.
The Goddess, (Sirius A), is verybright. Her male counter-part, (Sirius B), is totally invisible without a telescope), and is also very heavy (he is the size of the Earth, but weighs as much as the Sun). He is the brightest X-ray source in the sky, and is known as the God who sees through everything.
Sometimes Shiv(a) is shown standing with AUM behind him. AUM is in fact, behind His image. He is an icon (eye-con) of AUM.
His first orbital movement caused the first sound in the progression of orbital movements and sounds that is AUM.
The name of the blue God in Sanskrit, is Shiv, meaning orbit, hem, or border, in reference to Sirius B’s orbit.
The Dogon people of Mali, West Africa know that Sirius B’s orbit is the source of creation.
Sirius A and Sirius B are the origin of the Yin and Yang symbol, they are the Yin and Yang. They are two parts of one thing, and the source of AUM, the sound that created the universe.
Far into pre-history, the religions and mythologies of the world have given divine status to Sirius A and Sirius B as the star forms of the God and Goddess. Sirius A as the Goddess, in red, and Sirius B as the God, in blue.
Sirius plays a large role in the life of Jesus. Sirius is known as the Morning Star. In the Bible, Jesus says, “I am the bright Morning Star.” Rev. 22:16. The Three Wise Men, the Magi of Persia, were followers of the star Sirius. Upon their arrival in Jerusalem to attend the birth of Jesus, the Magi said in court, “We have seen His Star in the east” Matthew 2:2.
Is Jesus Sirius? Does Jesus in some real way personify AUM, this Word of God in the sky? Jesus said he was the Alpha and Omega, the first and last sound. AHA.
AUM is also known to be the origin of the fifty sounds of the Vedic Sanskrit language. These fifty sounds are shown distributed throughout the Sri Yantra. Vedic Sanskrit is the language of the hymns of the Rig Veda, and is the visionary Mother Tongue of the planet.
