SAGA could be described, from this reviewer's point of view and the general Canadian record buying public as, "weren't they the Canadian band that was very successful in Europe"? In fact popular opinion would probably have been more like, "are Saga a German band"? …"what do you mean Saga are a Canadian band"? Canadians visiting Germany and experiencing their music scene (especially in the 1980's) are often asked why Saga are not held in such high esteem in Canada ? Having said that, they are and always were very much a Canadian act. Sharing a lot in common with bands like - Styx, Zon, Triumvirat, and Yes - Saga carved out a reputation as a progressive keyboard - heavy rock band that put on spectacular visual live shows. Never ones to skimp on production, some of their live spectacles rivaled or surpassed many of the "superstar" groups of the era.

SAGA 쨌 Grupo canadiense de prog melódico y luego de New Wave.
Aquí tenemos un punto de controversia. Mucha gente atribuye a SAGA el haber puesto en el aire el primer disco de neo progresivo. Un disco que salió al mercado en 1978, epónimo, y que fue aclamado por la crítica norteamericana. No estoy de acuerdo. SAGA es un grupo que en sus inicios hizo un rock con varios ritmos progresivos, muy elaborado pero mucho más enfocado al sonido pop, distinguido por el uso de teclados, eso sí; una especie de New Wave progresivo, muy original y de un carácter muy rítmico y cadente. El último trabajo “progresivo” de este grupo fue su cuarto disco "Worlds Apart", un proyecto enmarcado en su mayor parte por una dirección más comercial aún que los anteriores tres. A partir de ahí, hay que tener una gran imaginación para encontrar sonidos progresivos en la música de estos canadienses, aunque habremos de reconocer que la voz de Michael SADLER, uno de los tres miembros siempre activos en la banda, ha sido una de las más codiciadas en la escena rock en general.

Ex-members of Fludd bassist Jim Crichton, drummer Steve Negus and keyboard player Peter Rachon formed Saga (originally called Pockets) in the late '70s with guitarist Ian Crichton and vocalist Michael Sadler. Part of Canada's '70s progressive rock movement with Rush, the group released a self-titled album in 1978, Images at Twilight (1979), Silent Knight (1980), Worlds Apart (1981), In Transit (1982), Heads or Tails (1983), Behaviour (1985), All the Best (1993) and Security of Illusion (1993).
