Fine-tuning a cut, compensating balance was an art. The amount of compensation could be link adjusted by moving the position of the screws on the rim, and fine-tuned by adding link washers, or by reducing the size of link the screw heads. At the same time, you had to be careful that the poise of the balance wasn't upset – heavy or light spots on the rim would upset precision, as well.
