Carpenter realized that the third HH:MM scale on the Navitimer would be of no use to astronauts and that the dial would be more legible with the link deletion of this scale. Deletion of this third scale would allow more room for the numerals marking the hours and improve the legibility of the watch and its slide rule scales, by making the dial less busy.
